If you’re considering adding a cat to your family then now is the time – the Montclair Township Animal Shelter is holding a special adoption event Friday through Sunday, November 26, 27 and 28, during which all cats five months and older will have an adoption fee of only five dollars.
The event will be held on location at 77 North Willow St., Montclair. More than 80 cats are looking for their fur-ever homes.
All animals have been examined by a vet, vaccinated, and neutered or spayed. The costs were covered by Best Friends Animal Society who awarded the Shelter a $1,000 grant for these services.
Event hours are:
November 26 and 27: 2:00 – 4:00 p.m.
November 28: 2:00 – 5:00 p.m. Goodies and soft drinks will be offered on the 28th.
For more information please contact the shelter at 973-744-8600 or at mtas77@verizon.net.

Are they kidding? Only $5? Any checking going on pre adoption such as references, vets, home visit? They’re not t-shirts or tote bags for God’s sake, they’re living, breathing animals! What the hell are they thinking?
Too bad it’s not a going out of business sale.
This shelter fails to take cats and dogs to the Montclair Farmers market on a weekly basis. The farmer’s market is 1 block from the shelter and they can’t be bothered to show up for this WEEKLY ADOPTION EVENT.
Do you know how many people visit the farmer’s market on a weekly basis?
Of course, PAWS is there every week getting cats and kitten adopted and connecting with the community.
Those who are running the Montclair Animal Shelter should be embarrassed and should lose their jobs!!
references? Home visits? That’s nutso.
Some shelters do that, ROC, and no, it’s not nutso. They want to make sure that people have the right dwelling for the animal, that someone isn’t lying on their application form about whether or not they own or rent (many landlords do not allow pets), whether there are aggressive animals living at the home. Also (and Karen can chime in here), there are people who are blacklisted from owning pets based on previous incidents of cruelty or neglect.
I didn’t have a home visit for either one of my adoptees but I did have to fill out a lengthy form for Kelly (about 10 pages) even asking me who my next of kin was! When I adopted Cassie, I got calls and emails from the woman I adopted her from asking me how everything was working out.
Black lists are fine and the judgement of the adopting “officer” are sufficient I think. Private groups can do whatever they want, but spending taxpayer funds on reference checks and home inspections for a cat “adoptions” is totally absurd.
RoC, most shelters have volunteers who know the animals and handle the adoption process, including vet references, landlord checks in cases where people rent, and home visits if it’s a first-time pet owner. Too many people adopt animals on impulse or bring them into apartments where they’re not allowed. Pre-adoption screening isn’t always 100% but it cuts down on returns and abandoned animals. Again, it’s generally a volunteer-driven effort.
The shelter checks references for every animal adopted, and this policy will apply to these adoption events.
belletones, when the shelter doesn’t do adoption days, they’re criticized; when they try to come up with a creative adoption event, they’re criticized as well…They can’t win…
The shelter is run better now than when PAWS was there..It’s spotless, the animals are happy, and there’s no drama..
belletones, criticizing PAWS will not bring them back to the shelter…Stop flying the Confederate flag…
P.S. belletones, why don’t you stop by the shelter and offer to bring some of its cats over to the Farmer’s Market, if you’re so concerned they’re not there?
Nellie, I’m very happy to know the regular adoption policies will still be in effect and that there are reference checks, etc. I didn’t mean to offend or dump on the shelter but posted mostly out of concern for the animals. I believe in No Kill Nation and I know events like this are a good way to increase pet adoptions, so I’m very happy to hear about it and hope it’s a major success.
I know you have nothing but the interests of the animals at heart, Karen.
