Here’s another chance to vote. Hot From The Kettle is going “down neck” to visit Baristaville’s favorite Ironbound restaurants.

Let us know which Brazilian, Portuguese, or Spanish Restaurant is your favorite. Sadly, my favorite, Roque & Rebelo, is long gone, but there are plenty of options to choose from.

Let me know if I’ve left out any of your favorites.

UPDATE: The poll is closed. The winner is Forno’s with 18% of the votes! Casa Vasca came in second with 15%, followed by Iberia with 13%.

  1. You left out Casa Vasca on Elm St. Great Spanish-Basque food at very reasonable prices. They get my vote!

  2. Might be good, but I tend to steer clear
of Irvington and Newark, as much as possible and
I am sure that I’m not the only one to do so.

  3. I bet, Sandy, that the vast majority of folks in those places that you avoid are OK people. But I’m very sure you are correct about others avoiding those towns as well – as per Colbert: Keep fear alive!

  4. Emerson wrote that “as soon as there is life, there is danger.”

Go to Israel, Sandy. Go to Newark for lunch.

Just don’t take an Eagle Rock school bus there.

  5. It has been a couple of years since we have been there, but Beira-Mar of Spain — on Downing Street a couple of blocks up from Ferry — was excellent. Does anyone know if this place is still open? If it is, Melody, I highly recommend it.

  6. My favorite was La Cibeles on Ridge Road in Lyndhurst. After many years of family parties there, celebrating weddings, babies, birthdays, quinceaneras, and the food ever, they closed sometime last year. I was devastated. I had heard a rumor that it was going to re-open but haven’t heard anything since.

My 2nd favorite is Fornos, but it’s a whole lot more trouble to get to and park.

  7. Before Montclair Academy and Kimberley merged into MKA….we already used to merge as juniors and seniors for Friday night outings to the Spanish Tavern or similar restaurants Down Neck…..now, I go when our dear friend Donato organizes an expedition….(I would love to see Melody do an interview with Donnie….he’s TOTAL EXPERT on Down Neck eateries!!!)

    But for me….Down Neck means…..NASTOS!!!!https://nastoicecream.com/

  8. Melody, thanks for the update, sad though it is. We will try FrankGG’s recommendation for Ice Cream though. Looking forward to your results.

  9. Mrs Ice and I always enjoy dinner ‘down neck’ when we attend a show at NJPAC. And yes the area is safe, well lighted, and easy access off of 280.

As far as my fav app goes I always eat the garlic shrimp in every restaurant I have frequented and haven’t had a bad plate.

  10. One more missed restaurant – and my family adores their paella – Spanish Sangria on Magazine Street

  11. Hey yall! Want to try new things. Was thinking of having an authentic “ethnic” experience. To eat foods from foreign lands (via Spain). Feel like mtc doesn’t have the “right” kind of ethnic foods. Too many mainstreamers. Kind of seems like ppl in the mtc might be “scared” to go to the “city” to have a meaningful meal. Too many poor people. Not enuf parking (via SUVs). There’s just so many ppl on earth. Need to connect with chill bros from all over.

Is there a “safe” place for ethnic restaurants?
How does my cultural background influence the ppl around me?
Should I get mad blazed and eat crazee foods?
Will I get “shafted” if I go to “dangerous” places?

  12. LOL, Hrobrah.

Sometimes you have to get out of your “comfort zone” if you want to experience great things in life. You haven’t lived until you’ve eaten at an Italian restaurant on Arthur Avenue in the Bronx. Most jazz clubs are located in not-so-great neighborhoods but does that mean that you shouldn’t go to jazz clubs? Just exercise caution, that’s all.

Most of the restaurants in the Ironbound have their own parking lots, too, complete with an attendant.

  13. We love Teixeira’s Bakery – besides the amazing selection of pastries, they also have yummy soups and panini style sandwiches.

  14. Seriously Sandy, you have to get over it. I work part-time in Montclair and see ‘shadier’ characters on Bloomfield Ave. than I do down neck.

  15. Forno’s and Casa Vasca are good. Cuisine of Spain at both. However, Iberia is a crappy ‘tourist trap’.
