This just in from Lt. Scott Buehler, Montclair Police Department:

Disturbance

On 11/26/10 at approximately 11:55 PM, police were in the area of Bloomfield Avenue and Gates Avenue when they observed a group of approximately three hundred teenagers and young adults in the middle of the street. Police determined that the group was exiting Unbelieva-Bill’s on Bloomfield Avenue and it appeared that several fights were about to ensue. Shortly thereafter a large group again congregated in the area of two unidentified males fighting. After trying to disperse the group, police discharged oleoresin capsicum, causing much of the group, including the fight participants, to flee the area.
Once most of the group dispersed, another male returned to the area and stood in the street, yelling at the crowd regarding someone smacking his cousin. The male was told to leave the area, but refused. The 20 year old from of Irvington was taken into custody and issued a township ordinance summons for being a disorderly person and later released.

Writer Charged With Teen Stalking

Joe Del Priore, a North Bergen retired postman who has read his poetry and flash fiction at the Montclair Public Library, Luna Stage and The Fine Grind in Little Falls, was charged last week with stalking two teenage girls, and the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office has sent a warning to Bergen County schools and police departments, along with a picture of Del Priore.

Cliffside Pilot, the hyperlocal blog that broke the story, quoted detectives as saying that Del Priore had been taking an extraordinary number of photos of teenage female athletes and cheerleaders at Bergen County sporting events. Investigators found a digital camera with 1,400 images, many of young girls, Cliffside Pilot said. Continue Reading

Earth-Friendly Christmas Trees from an Old Montclair Family

BY  |  Monday, Nov 29, 2010 1:00pm  |  COMMENTS (39)

When it comes to choosing a Christmas tree, everyone has their own preference, and there are as many species, shapes and sizes out there to satisfy just about anyone. No one knows this better than Christine Glickson and her daughter, Kathryn Schaub, who run Stehli Trees — a traditional cut-down-your-own Christmas tree farm in Vernon, New Jersey.

“Yesterday, we sold a 20 foot tree,” said Glickson. “That’s something we do only once a season or so. It took 6 guys to haul it through the fields and load it onto the vehicle.” The True Fir, which is six inches taller than the White House Christmas tree, is now set up in a Jersey City loft. “I called to make sure that they got home OK,” explained Glickson. “We really care about our customers.”

The farm has been in Glickson’s family since the late 1920s, when her grandfather, Edgar Stehli, a character actor on Broadway, purchased the land of about 50 acres as a secluded and peaceful place where he could be with his family away from the frantic pace of the city. It was not until the 1970s, however, that Stehli’s daughter Christine and her mother, Nancy Knoerzer, started farming the land and actively preserving it.

Walking into Dem Two Hands is like opening an exotic trunk. Nubby sweaters here, chunky jewelry there, all matters of carved wood, flowing fabric and shiny baubles. But what caught my eye the other day was a particularly-well curated selection of PaperBlanks notebooks. Here’s an excellent stocking stuffer or quick teacher’s gift. The small notebook is $6.95, medium $14.95 and large day planner $19.95.

Dem Town Hands is located at 61 N. Fullerton Ave., Montclair. 973.783.8344.

Welcome to Cyber Monday

BY  |  Monday, Nov 29, 2010 9:14am  |  COMMENTS (9)

Will you be one of the 106.9 million Americans shopping online for bargains today, from wherever you might be?

According to Shop.org — which coined the phrase Cyber Monday in 2005 — 54.1 percent of those with on-the-job internet access (70.1 million) and around another 36.9 million in other locations will be taking advantage of special promotions, free shipping and flash sales (sometimes only lasting an hour or so) that mark today’s ceremonial start of the internet holiday shopping season.

Some of the industry leaders, like Amazon and eBay, have also launched iPhone apps for mobile holiday shoppers, embracing the burgeoning trend of mobile phone commerce (m-commerce), where buying and selling is done via smartphone.

Will you be partaking in the Cyber frenzy, and if so, where will you do it from? If you’re a manager, will you tolerate a bit of on-the-job shopping? If you’re shopping from work, will you be secretive about it?

Or maybe you’re more interested in the touch factor of that the bricks-and-mortar shops offer?

Take our shopping poll, below and tell us where you stand in the shopping state of affairs.

How I Spent My Thanksgiving Vacation

BY  |  Sunday, Nov 28, 2010 12:26pm  |  COMMENTS (29)

While most people in Baristaville were sitting down to a feast of turkey, cranberry sauce and all the fixings, I was dining on berry-flavored barium sulfate with a side of morphine at St. Barnabas Hospital in Livingston.

I have Crohn’s disease, the abdominal equivalent of corroded pipes. I’m sure plumbers get a lot of calls on Thanksgiving or the day after. But my pipes clogged up the night before Thanksgiving (technically, this is called a small bowel obstruction) just from one or two pecans I’d popped in my mouth while preparing the topping for a sweet potato bake.
