Fleet Feet Fun Run

BY  |  Sunday, Nov 28, 2010 10:22am  |  COMMENTS (3)

Some people just refuse to let the caloric onslaught of Thanksgiving get the best of them. On the morning of Thanksgiving, runners filled Ridgewood Ave. in Glen Ridge for the Ashenfelter 8K. Later that day and on Saturday, Ultimate Frisbee fans made the pilgrimage to their sport’s birthplace in Maplewood. And yesterday, more than 50 runners and walkers congregated at Fleet Feet Sports in Montclair to celebrate the athletic retailers’s 23rd anniversary. A three-mile Fun Run/Walk was followed by a pancake breakfast. The event was co-sponsored by Saucony, the designer and manufacturer of high performance athletic footwear and apparel.

Giving Thanks For Lucky

BY  |  Friday, Nov 26, 2010 11:00am  |  COMMENTS (5)

This is the picure I took of my twins before they left for college this September. If it weren’t for the Emergency Animal Hospital in Fairfield, this farewell photo of my childrens’ childhood pet, Lucky, would in all likelihood never have been taken. Our 13 -year old springer spaniel underwent emergency surgery in July. The main thing I communicated to Dr. Hunt, the amazing surgeon was, “Please don’t let Lucky die just before David and Julia go to college.” I couldn’t imagine a worse send-off from home. In David and Julia’s eyes, Lucky WAS home.

So this Thanksgiving I am grateful for the skilled doctors and staff at the Emergency Animal Hospital who helped keep Lucky alive and healthy this year. All of Baristaville’s pet owners can themselves feel lucky and reassured knowing such an outstanding facility exists right here in Essex County, and that it is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. I am sure that many pet owners in other areas are not nearly as fortunate as we are.

Lucky’s illness in July was a true wake up call to the thought our family had been suppressing for a while—no 13-year old dog can live forever. And, since July, Lucky has already developed some new conditions which hamper his walking and proprieception. Thus, we have seen Dr. Hunt again, and even consulted with the Hospital’s neurologist.

Without a doubt, though, Lucky’s still got his “mojo.” Among other activities, including sleep, Lucky loves to eat, to smell (which I’ve come to equate with reading), to wag his tail, to keep himself and his habitat clean, to bark at our long-suffering but good-natured mailman. Continue Reading

The Year My Family Didn’t Cook

BY  |  Friday, Nov 26, 2010 9:01am  |  COMMENTS (0)

Like many families, mine enjoys gathering over good food. Most of us, across the generations and with a range of styles, are good cooks. One of my brothers is a restauranteur, the other has a background in culinary arts. My sister is a fantastic and prolific baker, my mother, the teacher of us all, roasts the best turkey around and my son is meticulous and has a great sense of flavoring. The rest of us love to experiment, and we each have our own repertoire of special dishes. Needless to say, we take the preparation (and eating) of the annual Thanksgiving meal seriously. Everything is made from scratch, using garden-grown herbs and the freshest of ingredients. It’s ritualistic and traditional.

But this year, we didn’t cook a single dish. Instead we decided to break with our own previously set-in-stone style and eat out. This is the year that we let the chefs at Highlawn Pavillion do the work, the wait staff serve us and someone else do all the dishes. It was delightful and delicious.

This radical break from tradition had been creeping up on us. We live in a medium-sized home in Glen Ridge. It can handle a sit down dinner for 10 or so, and accommodates many more for casual parties, but the last time we hosted Thanksgiving dinner we had 29 people and numerous family dogs. We’ve done it before, many times, but it involves removing all the furniture from our living room, cooking for weeks, and a general level of stress. My husband — the pragmatist of the crowd — finally blew the whistle.

Although I fought him tooth and nail at the beginning, he encouraged me to consider opting out of the Thanksgiving rat race. With blessings from the other family members, we dined at the elegant West Orange restaurant, and had the most relaxing Thanksgiving day I can remember. We whittled down our numbers to 10 people, and invited the larger crowd to come for brunch on Friday (looking at the clock, I’d better finish this post and get into hostess mode). We’re still not really cooking for the crowd, but relying on Fairway Market in Paramus for platters of smoked fish and The Watchung Deli for a giant Italian hero.

It was a painful severing of the traditional ties, and I’ve felt mildly bereft these past few weeks not cooking and organizing, but all in all, it was a brilliant idea. I’m not sure what’ll happen in years to come — whether we’ll return to home cooking or stay the new course. For this year, though, a more relaxing holiday dinner has never happened in the history of my family of cooks.

Happy Thanksgiving 2010, Baristaville.

Are you cooking a turkey this year (Butterball Turkey hotline is 1-800-Butterball)?. Watching Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade? Look for two new giant balloons — Diary of a Wimpy Kid and Kung Fu Panda — and an appearance by Kanye West.

However you spend the holiday, know this — we’re thankful for you. Every tip, photo, email, and all the other ways readers contribute to the site make all of us at Baristanet feel incredibly fortunate. Barista Kids is feeling the same way, too.

Share what you are thankful for in comments, what pie you have to have today, your favorite stuffing recipe (yes, Virginia, people are making White Castle stuffing) and anything else you feel like sharing.

Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours.

Coffee With…Angel Williams

Angel Williams lost more than 200 pounds by dancing and recently appeared on the “Dr. Oz Show” sharing her weight-loss moves with the show’s host. Most recently, she was the group exercise coordinator at New York Sports Club in Montclair. But last Saturday, she formally announced that she’s leaving to take her hip hop and step classes to the new 3Sixty Studio.

Angel’s energy, enthusiasm and positive attitude have inspired hundreds of Montclair residents who have taken her exercise classes over the years. Here, she candidly shares the challenges she’s overcome.

Where did you grow up?

I’m from Newark originally. My mom got married when I was two years old. She met a gentleman and they ended up getting married and moving to south Florida, so around two years old, I was moved from Newark to a little town called Fort Pierce —the town barely had a cab company, much less a bus company.

I was very glad to see this post. The running in the street around here drives me crazy, mostly because the the majority of the runners I've encountered (not every runner)seem to think that it's their right to take up half the street when what they are doing is in fact illegal. And let's not be silly. Yes, concrete is hard on the joints, but the pavement isn't that much better. It's not like the roads are made of track rubber.
