Swami Radhanath came to Baker Street Yoga in Maplewood Tuesday night to give a talk and promote his book, The Journey Home.

He told his story in the dimly lit room that was filled near capacity. Most of the people who came to hear his story were women dressed in yoga outfits and stocking feet. A sweet incense filled the air. Carol Garland, the co-owner of Baker Street Yoga, welcomed him. In her introduction of him, Garland said that we may see “that our journey is revealed to us…there will be many ‘a ha’ moments as to what (our) life could be’ in regards to what we were about to hear. With that Swami Radhanath came to the front of the room and sat down.

Roche’s Nutley Plant Will Lose Around 900 Jobs

BY  |  Tuesday, Nov 23, 2010 10:32am  |  COMMENTS (74)

While other pharmaceutical companies have been continuously taking hits and implementing layoffs over the past years, until last week, it seemed like Roche might get through the economic downturn relatively unscathed.

According to an announcement from the Swiss company’s headquarters in Basel, the global Roche workforce will be reduced by 4,800, with a total of 6,300 affected by the combination of planned job reductions and transfers.

The overhaul program, called “Operational Excellence,” is said to be “necessary to ensure sustained success of the company,” by Roche Group CEO Severin Schwan. “We will make every effort to find socially responsible solutions for the employees affected.”

We wondered what this meant for the Nutley campus — Baristaville’s own little slice of the corporation. We did a little digging and spoke to Roche’s Nutley-based Darien E. Wilson, Director, Public Affairs by email. Here’s what she had to say:

‘Responsible Compromise’ on Free Holiday Parking

BY  |  Tuesday, Nov 23, 2010 9:27am  |  COMMENTS (27)

After making a proclamation declaring this Saturday “Small Business Saturday,” to help promote local businesses, the Montclair town council voted against bagging the parking meters around these shops during the two weeks before Christmas.

At last night’s council meeting, local shop owners came to plead their case on how important having the meters bagged is to their business during the holiday season. The council’s final decision was passing a resolution that would grant free parking for the three Saturdays before Christmas, but not the traditional two full weeks. The resolution passed 5-1, with Second Ward Councilor Cary Africk voting against it. By not having free parking for those weeks, the Montclair Parking Authority said it will save the town $50,000.

Ban Ki-Moon Tells Seton Hall: UN is World’s First Responder

BY  |  Monday, Nov 22, 2010 7:11pm  |  COMMENTS (8)

The eighth United Nations Secretary General, Ban Ki-Moon, spoke gently this afternoon to around 1,000 people inside Seton Hall’s Walsh Gymnasium on the South Orange campus.

He seemed like a man with great patience, hope, and realistic expectations of our complex, rapidly-changing world, but his message of imperative change was very clear and without ambiguity. His statements, such as “there is only one way to eliminate the threat of nuclear weapons, and that is to eliminate nuclear weapons” leave no room for interpretation.

“We must be the voice of the voiceless, the defender of the defenseless and we must help the helpless,” he said. Ban Ki-Moon, 66 recalled the United Nations helping his country and his village after the Korean War, and knew from an early age that he wanted to be a diplomat. While the Honorable John C. Whitehead — namesake of Seton Hall’s Whitehead School of Diplomacy and International Relations (and a Montclair native) — stated in his introduction of Ban, that it’s “too early to pass judgement on his overall performance [as Secretary General], he has already had a big impact.”

Cat Lost in Glen Ridge

BY  |  Monday, Nov 22, 2010 4:38pm  |  COMMENTS (6)

A reader writes:

The painters may have let out our indoor cat, Alek. He is a Siberian, which means he looks like a regular long-haired cat with brown and white fur (like a tabby). He is shy and lives on Hamilton Road in Glen Ridge. He does not have a collar (he is strictly an indoor cat) but may be microchipped. If you do see him, please take him in as he is not savvy about the outdoors. Our very senior cat passed away this morning, and we do not want to lose Alek as well!

If you’ve seen a cat that fits this description (photo to come), please write to pets@baristanet.com.

UPDATE: Alek was hiding in the basement! All is well.

Global warming or not, we in Baristaville can still count on massive avian migrations passing through exactly this time of year. This great video of birds flocking over the Marquette/Alexander area of Upper Montclair comes to us via reader John Swartz.

Hot From The Kettle: Richie Cecere’s Restaurant & Bar

BY  |  Monday, Nov 22, 2010 1:44pm  |  COMMENTS (2)

I admit that since it’s opening in 2002, Richie Cecere’s Restaurant and Bar, located at 2 Erie Street, Montclair, was an establishment cloaked in a prohibitively expensive mystery.

The impressive, brick and mahogany edifice, across from the Erie Station, seemed unapproachable. But no longer is that the case! The ultra-luxe supper club has changed its tune; still swanky and timelessly cool, Cecere’s is now affordable. The restaurant has revamped their menu, significantly lowering prices, offering a bar menu, and a children’s menu.
