Planning a big bash to welcome in 2011? If you’re taking the party outside your home, you’ll want to make some phonecalls right away as some local restaurants, like Fascino in Montclair, were already fully booked for New Year’s Eve several days before Christmas.

We’ve done some research on your behalf. Here are the Baristaville restaurants that are open for business on the eve of 2011.

If you’re a restaurateur and we’ve inadvertently missed you, please add your opening and closing hours and any pertinent offers for Dec. 31 in the comments. (Photo shows appetizer selection from Boonsong Thai. Manager was unavailable for comment at time of posting) Continue Reading

Morning Commute Still Not Easy

BY  |  Tuesday, Dec 28, 2010 8:49am  |  COMMENTS (1)

It may be Tuesday, but NJ Transit trains are still operating on an “enhanced weekend schedule,” meaning you need to type in Jan. 17, 2011 — Martin Luther King Day — in NJ Transit’s online schedule page to find out what trains are running to your area. After taking the day off yesterday, DeCamp is running, but Clever Commuters report the predictable delays you’d expect following a major blizzard.

Remember you can get Clever Commute alerts, real time, on our home page — just to the right of our Food stories. Tell us about your morning commute, or any other attempt to venture out.

Snow Siege: The Great Dig-out Begins

If you’re still on the inside looking out, you can postpone the inevitable emergence into today’s snow for only so long. The views out my own windows –the front facing east, and the back facing west — offer a look at the two options for today.

Out my back window (below, right) at Canterbury Park in Montclair’s south end — the favorite sledding spot for this corner of Baristaville — is the promise of a classic snow day. While still untouched this morning, surely within an hour’s time, the park will be packed with snowsuit-clad sled riders zipping down the long, mellow east slope of the hill. Continue Reading

Good Morning, Blizzard!

The snow has stopped falling, but there’s about 18″ with huge drifts, the wind is still whipping and the blizzard warning is in effect until noon. The world is now divided into the snugglers and the explorers, those who want to continue to pull those blankets up over their heads and those who want to race out into winter wonderland. Take our poll after the jump.

Among the explorers is our friend Nicky Mesiah, who hails from Buffalo, and who sent us a video from her morning expedition on Forest St. in Montclair.

UPDATE: BNN reports that about 60 people stranded on Rt. 280 in West Orange were being transported to West Orange High School around 11 p.m.

Steve Sweeney, acting governor for New Jersey with Chris Christie away in Disney World and Lt. Gov. Kim Guadagno also on vacation, has declared a state of emergency. By the end of tomorrow, snow is expected to reach 15 to 20 inches — possibly two feet in some areas. With gusty winds, driving visibility tonight is close to zero. All local area airports are closed. NJ Transit and Decamp bus service is suspended and Amtrak has canceled all service between Boston and New York.

I was very glad to see this post. The running in the street around here drives me crazy, mostly because the the majority of the runners I've encountered (not every runner)seem to think that it's their right to take up half the street when what they are doing is in fact illegal. And let's not be silly. Yes, concrete is hard on the joints, but the pavement isn't that much better. It's not like the roads are made of track rubber.
