OK, Christmas Blizzard 2010 is here! S.J. Streeter took this picture of a Glen Ridge salt truck around 12:15 p.m., just as the snowflakes were starting.

NJ Transit, meanwhile, has already announced that it will be running an “enhanced weekend schedule” Monday. To find out what buses or trains are coming near you, enter Jan. 17, 2011, Martin Luther King’s Day, in the drop-down menu. Continue Reading

There’s no white stuff yet, but the township of Bloomfield reminds residents to get their cars off the streets the minute it starts falling. Better yet, do it now. Here’s the official announcement, which came by email, text and robocall.

Here’s a wonderful little piece of Christmas news, just a bit over 24 hours old. Fran Liscio, Baristanet’s former photo editor and the president of Presby Memorial Iris Gardens, got a beautiful diamond ring on Christmas Eve from her boyfriend of five years, Joel Lerner. I happened to be there to catch the first toast. The entire Baristanet family extends its hearty congratulations to two of the nicest people in the world.

White Day-After-Christmas?

BY  |  Saturday, Dec 25, 2010 8:31pm  |  COMMENTS (4)

True, it doesn’t look like this as we post, around 8:30 on Christmas night, but there’s a blizzard warning in effect for our area from 6 a.m. Sunday through 6 p.m. Monday. The National Weather Service is predicting accumulations of 11 to 16 inches and wind gusts up to 40 miles per hour.

The weather is sure to mess up travel plans for millions of people on the east coast, but provide snuggly indoor conditions for those who just have to stay home with their Christmas loot and leftovers. Provided the weatherman is right, send us your snow photos tomorrow and let us know about road, airport and supermarket conditions.

A merry, merry Christmas (or Holiday) to all!

Christmas Alternatives

BY  |  Friday, Dec 24, 2010 1:00pm  |  COMMENTS (3)

We all know what most people will be doing Saturday. But if you don’t have a tree with lots of presents under it, or even if you do — and just want a break from family togetherness — here are two options we’ve found. Let us know about any others in the comments.

Christmas morning or not, Yogadesha at 25 Watchung Plaza in Montclair has a 9 a.m. Vinyasa class on Dec. 25, led by Loryn. Sign up here. Regular prices apply.

Temple Ner Tamid in Bloomfield celebrates the time-honored Jewish tradition of movies and Chinese food on Christmas by presenting the 1971 animated film “The Point” , narrated by Ringo Starr, with music by Harry Nilsson, along with a kosher Chinese meal. Advanced reservations: $5 per person/$15 per family. Walk-ins: $10 per person/$25 per family.

As usual, movie theaters in the area are all open too. Click here for schedules.

Water Main Backs Up Bloomfield Avenue Traffic

BY  |  Friday, Dec 24, 2010 11:48am  |  COMMENTS (3)

Montclair had a second water main break in as many days this morning, on Bloomfield Avenue just west of North Mountain Avenue (yesterday, there was a break  on Walnut Street). The repair crew was in full work mode when this photo was taken at 10 a.m., and the on-scene police officer expected that they’d be finished some time today. The two incidents are not related, according to the officer, and he noted that the pipes that broke are around 100 years old.

The westbound side of the street was closed, detouring traffic onto North Mountain and causing a slight backup. Drivers appeared to be patient and orderly while waiting to make the turn in what seemed to be a 10 minute delay to get around the work site.

Water was shut off, according to the MPD, though it was unclear to what extent this was affecting residents and businesses. Anyone without water in the area?

Less-Than-Neighborly Christmas Tidings

Living on our little street in Bloomfield for the last year or so has generally been great, but finding on-street parking can be a huge pain, especially since half of our street is in Glen Ridge, a town which prohibits overnight parking. However, as we have discovered, having to find parking on the street can result in some pretty hilarious stuff: in particular, anonymous notes from people who live in a house that you are often forced to park in front of for lack of any other available parking. I was very glad to see this post. The running in the street around here drives me crazy, mostly because the the majority of the runners I've encountered (not every runner)seem to think that it's their right to take up half the street when what they are doing is in fact illegal. And let's not be silly. Yes, concrete is hard on the joints, but the pavement isn't that much better. It's not like the roads are made of track rubber.
