Montclair’s Central Presbyterian to Bless Baristaville’s Animals, 12/26

BY  |  Friday, Dec 24, 2010 9:04am  |  COMMENTS (1)

Be they iguanas, dogs, cats, fish or hedgehogs — like this little fellow from last year’s blessing — or any other of “God’s creatures,” Baristaville’s non-human residents are all welcome at the Central Presbyterian Church in Montclair (46 Park Street), this Sunday, 12/26, for the annual “Blessing of the Animals” ceremony, at 10 a.m.

The ceremony honors St. Francis of Assisi, the patron saint of animals, merchants and ecology. For thousands of years, the Roman Catholic church has conducted a Blessing of the Animals on St. Francis’ Feast Day (in October), but other religions — including Anglicans and Presbyterians — have adopted this ceremony over the past two decades as a way to honor all of God’s creatures.

During Central Presbyterian’s ceremony, the Rev. Johnson will read from the Book of Genesis and will bless each attending animal individually.

Jury in Kenneth Duckett Trial Requests Re-reading of Testimonies, Jury at Impasse

BY ,  |  Thursday, Dec 23, 2010 2:26pm  |  COMMENTS (3)

UPDATE: The jury is currently at an impasse and continues deliberations this afternoon. The court is closed tomorrow. It’s unclear whether there will be a verdict today.

Following the closing arguments of the Kenneth Duckett murder trial, which were heard earlier this week, the jury asked Judge Joseph Cassini III, that transcripts from five witness testimonies be re-read on this fourth day of deliberations.

After an initial discussion between Essex County Assistant Prosecutor Rachel Gran, defense attorney Thomas Ashley and the Judge, four of the five testimonies were approved for re-reading; Natasha Richardson (a lifeguard on duty at the “Y” at the time of the shooting), William Johnson (who drove Duckett to the YMCA), John Carlson (a parent who was in the pool observation area at the time of the shooting) and Duckett’s own testimony, starting from when he entered the YMCA.

Cassini denied a fifth request for the re-reading of the prosecuting attorney’s opening statement, saying that the opening is “not evidence, but merely the attorney’s interpretive views of the evidence.”

It’s a good day to unfurl your rainbow flag here in Baristaville. As of today, Essex is officially the first county in New Jersey to institute a LGBTQ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Questioning) Advisory Board.

County Executive Joseph N. DiVincenzo, Jr. and a coalition of partners announced the board’s mission as intended to “promote the well-being of the county’s LBGTQ citizenry through advocacy, policy advisement and community outreach.” DiVincenzo will appoint 13 county residents to sit on the board, and requests that interested participants send their resumes by 1/31 (details below).

“My administration has worked proactively to highlight the diversity in Essex County, and this panel will provide this population with a strong voice,” DiVincenzo said. “I encourage our residents to send us their resumes and get involved in their government,” he added.

Public Christmas Music, for Better or Worse?

BY  |  Thursday, Dec 23, 2010 9:10am  |  COMMENTS (16)

Shopping at Corrado’s Market in Clifton yesterday, amongst the throngs buying ingredients for a Christmas feast, I noticed that the holiday soundtrack was very pleasant. It was a tasteful mix of original-rendition classics, including one of my personal favorites, Bing Crosby doing Irving Berlin’s White Christmas (a great example of why a Jew can love Christmas music). The stream of nostalgic songs put me in a happy mood, inspiring me for the tasks ahead; cooking, cleaning, entertaining guests and spreading good cheer. It conjured up images of happy holiday seasons past and hopes for future good fortune.

Montclair’s Cope Center Gets $9,000 Grant

Wednesday, Dec 22, 2010 4:26pm  |  COMMENTS (0)

COPE Center, Inc. got an early holiday gift — a $9,000 grant from The Montclair Foundation. The grant will help support the services COPE provides to Montclair children, adolescents and families and be used in 2011 to help fund mental health and substance abuse counseling.

“When the economy experiences a decrease in productivity and pulls back, we see a clear increase in the demand for our services” said Sue Seidenfeld, executive director, COPE Center. “We continue to provide for our clients while our resources to combat the problem have declined due to reduced government revenue. Grants such as this one make the difference between being able to help people and having to deny their request for help”.

“The Montclair Foundation’s grant program is intended to support a broad range of activities and organizations that contribute to the quality of life in Montclair and its environs,” said Michelle Ruggiero, Grants Committee Chair, The Montclair Foundation. “We are happy to be able to be part of the important work COPE does.”

Hot From The Kettle: Prosciutto di . . . Palma?

BY  |  Wednesday, Dec 22, 2010 4:00pm  |  COMMENTS (3)

The first food piece I wrote for our fine hyperlocal blog was Prosciutto de Baristaville, wherein I bemoaned the failure of my first prosciutto.

Shortly after the article ran, I was contacted by Montclair foodie and author, Laura Schenone. She suggested I contact the pork curing maestro, Lou Palma. I immediately emailed Lou, and the rest is Baristanet history – ravioli, Christmas Peppers, and now, Prosciutto di “Palma”. Continue Reading

German Shepherd Mix Missing from Glen Ridge; Answers to the Name “Bear”

BY  |  Wednesday, Dec 22, 2010 3:25pm  |  COMMENTS (3)

A reader from Glen Ridge writes:

My dog, Bear, a large German Shepherd mix, has been missing since December 12 and he is not at any of the nearby shelters.

Bear is a 7-year-old adult male, weighs more than 80 pounds, has a brown-black-tan coat, brown eyes, and a unique black-spotted tongue. He is wearing a blue collar (no ID).

Bear is very shy towards strangers but will come to you if you are with a dog or have food. He dislikes crowds and noisy places. Most likely, he’s taken refuge in a park or wooded area (or possibly in someone’s backyard). Bear likes to chase deer so he could have traveled a good distance from his home before getting disoriented.

Please help us find him. He is a part of our family and Christmas will not be the same without him.

If you’ve seen Bear, please contact pets@baristanet.com.

UPDATE: Bear has been reunited with his very happy owner! He was found by a couple of kind souls who turned him over to the West Orange Animal Shelter. Will have more details soon.
