The holiday season is officially upon us. Decorations are up; Hanukkah candles have been lit and a marathon of Christmas specials are on every channel. Here’s a taste of some holiday events going on in Baristaville this weekend.
Celebrate Hanukkah this weekend at Temple Ner Tamid Dec. 5 at 4 p.m. There will be a Hanukkah candle lighting and a latka fry-off (bring enough for 10). After you’re filled with latkas, rock out with Sababa, a Jewish/folk rock group singing with the choirs of Temple Ner Tamid. Temple Ner Tamid is located on 936 Broad St., Bloomfield.
In Maplewood Village this Saturday, Dec. 4 there will be the opening of Maplewood’s time-honored holiday tradition, Dickens Village. Santa will arrive by fire truck at 1 p.m. and will be greeting visitors in his new house in Ricalton Square from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. The tree lighting ceremony begins at 3:45, with music performances by local high school students and a special holiday reading by Mayor Vic DeLuca. Come to St. Luke’s Episcopal Church this Sunday, Dec. 5 at 5 p.m. for Lloyd Pfautsch’s A Day for Dancing. Performing for the event is Schola Cantorum on Hudson, City Winds Trio and Joyful Noise DANCE Choir. St. Luke’s Episcopal Church is located on 73 S. Fullerton Ave., Montclair.
The New York Theatre Ballet Company will be performing The Nutcracker at SOPAC this Friday, Dec. 3 at 7 p.m. and Saturday, Dec. 4 at 2 and 8 p.m. The hour-long production is choreographed by Keith Michael and set to the original score by Tchaikovsky. Tickets are $42 and $32 and can be purchased here.
BergenPAC will also have performances of the Nutcracker by the NJ Ballet Company this weekend Dec 4. at 1 and 4:30 p.m. and Dec. 5 at 4:30 p.m. Tickets are $50, $40, $30 and $20 and can be purchased here.

St. John’s Lutheran Church in Bloomfield (216 Liberty St.) will be hosting “Caroling at Our Doorstep” this Sunday, Dec. 5 at 5 p.m. They will sing classic carols of Christmas at the doorstep of their church. The church will provide the music and candles for the event and desserts and hot beverages will be served afterwards in our fellowship hall. The event is free and open to everyone.
Oakeside Bloomfield Cultural Center, in association with resident vocalist Corinna Sowers-Adler of NiCori Studios and Productions, will have a new series at Oakeside, “Music at the Mansion“. The series will begin with “Winter Song”, featuring Bloomfield’s own Corinna Sowers-Adler on Sunday, Dec. 5 at 3 p.m.
Music at the Mansion will feature NYC and NJ musicians and will be hosted by Sowers-Adler. Guest musicians will include Litt and Alpher, Sean Harkness, Rosemary Loar, Claire Cooper, Lucio Fernandez, as well as musicians from Bloomfield and the surrounding areas. The New Jersey Choral Society celebrates its 30th anniversary year with this season’s Holiday Concert. Over the past 30 years, the group of 80 plus has taken its diverse repertoire around New Jersey and around the world – from Beijing to Vienna, Sydney to Czech Republic, from the White House to PBS specials and, natch, to Carnegie Hall. The concert will be held at Church of the Immaculate Conception, 30 N Fullerton Ave., Montclair.
The performance will be Dec. 4 from 8 to 10 p.m. at the Church of the Immaculate Conception in Montclair. Tickets are $20. For more information click here.








There’s also the St. Cassian Choir Carol Sing on Sunday at 7:30 PM at St. Cassian Church on Bellevue Ave. Suggested donation at the door is $10 per person.
Glad to see this in Rob’s comments. I have posted this FOUR times on Baristanet’s calendar this week, but it hasn’t been picked up or appeared on the site anywhere. It’s a great concert and features sing-along as well as full chorus, Schola and Quartet selections, brass, oboe and organ.
