Give TupTim or Boonsong a photo credit for the assorted appetizer platter pictured above. That’s definitely from one of the two restauarants.

Is Bloomfield off the grid on New Years? I do not see any listings for Bloomfield.

I like Senioretas, on Glenwood. Great Salsa !! Excellent drinks from the bar.

We never go out NYE. Too many drunks & “crazys” Usually Have a couple or 2 come over, and make Sloppy Joes. Or……. Celebrate ourselves. :)

Missing from that short list is the oldest establishment in Essex County, under continous family ownership, for over 50 years, that always serves up top notch quality food, always prepared to perfection. There *IS* a reason that they have out lasted 100s of others. Pals Cabin at Prospect Ave across Whole Foods. THE best steaks & burgers around.

  7. POSTED BY Conan  |  December 28, 2010 @ 11:34 am

What I really like about Pal’s Cabin, Sandy, is that — even though Fiorello LaGuardia signed my Birth Certificate — I am usually the youngest person in the joint (next to my significant other, that is). That and the Walker Races at Friday Lunch! :)

Mr. and Mrs. Iceman and some other friends are joining the Conans at the new Rose Mediterranean in Caldwell. If their New Year’s specials are anywhere near as good as the Christmas Eve specials, we are going to dine very well, indeed. http://www.rosemediterranean.com/

Hate to be a pest…Could you PLEASE, please, pretty please, label your photos with captions or some such indicator? Where is the delicious looking food from at the top of this post? The Fitzgeralds photo is self captioned but the dumplings in the next photo…are they from Bistro 18? Chia? Neither? Simply add “Chia (photo left) offers…” etc. You are doing your readers and your advertisers and your potential advertisers a disservice. Thanks.

Conen, I go for the food. I seldom glance at other diners.
It speaks volumes that the only “bad” part of of Pals, is that
many diners there are older people. Why would that bother you ?
God-willing, one day you will be an older diner, as well.
BTW, are you also bothered if there are too many Italians or Jews
or African Americans in attendance, or is it only if they are over
60? 70? 80? Not sure of your cut off, perhaps it is 50.
Go there & order a steak, cooked to your liking, and you will be
a convert. Take a beautiful woman with you to gaze it, and
don’t look around, if they disturb you.

When I was a kid, I always went to Pal’s with my parents on New Year’s Eve, so it brings back a lot of memories.

While it doesn’t bother me, I’ve noticed the crowd in Pal’s is older. I hope it attracts a younger crowd, as well, so it can be sustained for amny years to come. There’s still nothing like a Pal’s Cheeseburger with a salad with blue cheese dressing.

    It’s not “Fascino’s”. It’s Fascino. Jeez.

  13. POSTED BY cmaynard  |  December 28, 2010 @ 3:22 pm

Highland Place recently posted this on Maplewood Online, adding another option to its NYE dinner special:

UPDATE – while we believe the above deal is great for those who like a drink(!) we recognize that possibly there are folk out there who may not like being ‘forced’ to shell out for alcohol if they do not wish to indulge. We have therefore decided to offer a version B for New Years Eve – all of the above minus the open bar will be available for $70 (includes tax and gratuity).

Who’s the blonde at Bunny’s? The owner? The entertainment? The clientele?

  15. POSTED BY cmaynard  |  December 28, 2010 @ 4:08 pm

The blonde is the lovely and gracious Leslie Pogany, owner and proprietess of Bunny’s. We were there with the kids last night and Leslie made everyone feel welcome and happy to be there, as always.

@ conan, eat that Mediterranean style food, and live a long and healthy life. Wine, olives, tomatoes, basil, hummus, thick coffee, dancing and smashing plates, ahhh…(but I digress…)

….or, eat at a South Carolina just-off-I- 95 all-you-can-eat buffet with cheese-food toppings on deep-fried everything, and become a short term resident over at the Mountainside emergency room.

But, hey! It’s a free country!

@debgen1, what a great menu. We’d love to eat there, and prolong our lives. But I wouldn’t want to piss off the buffet place in SC- after all, those folks put Jim DeMint into office. And, he’s the Tea Bag hot dog shizzle. Besides, anyGod-fearin’ ‘merican knows that those them Europeans are a bunch of socialists, even the Italians, and, damn, that’s taboo.
I’m gonna chow down, a way down south in Dixie, and sip some cheese gravy on the side. I might need a triple bypass two days later, but it would be an honor to keep the hospitals busy down there ( and keep those honest jobs at the hospital active for a spell )
And think of all the gas I’d burn getting down there – don’t the fossil fuel PR effort defend everything they do as a benefit to the employment rate in the USA? Good for them! We can’t be strong in the face of Islamist hatred unless we eat fatty and greasy left-overs.
Hell, after all, I’m all in favor of full USA employment, so pedal to the metal, for the sake of USA jobs! Maybe I should start a cigarette habit on the way down, to keep all those tabakky jobs intact. That’s what I call selfless patriotism. And, anyway, the Mayans expected the world to end in 2012, so I’m a gonna vote for that sexy chick Sarah Palin. She can skin my moose anytime.

@Spiro Enjoy your trip South. Southern eating is a health hazard so be selective. I’ve been know to head that way to visit relatives. Have you noticed that butter is hard to find in many of their breakfast spots? This year I’ll be going a bit further South in a few months starting in Rio de janerio for Carnival.

I’ll spend NYE at a movie and dinner with friends in a place to be determined.

Happy New Year Rodgee. Hope to see you soon and get some of that fabulous food of yours!

Spiro, when I lived in Arkansas the 7-11s and the Pump n’ Pays almost all had a steam table with gizzards, fried chicken, mashed, and (by law) at least three different gravies: your red-eye, your cream, and your brown. I thought it was funny that people would go out to dinner at the gas station. Almost all the other restaurants down there were big on chicken (Tyson HQ is there), barbecue, and smoked meats of all kinds. But I have been a devotee of and believer in Julia Child for almost 40 years; while I have cut down on the butter and cream lately, I refuse to eliminate or try to replace them. Greek or other Mediterranean diets, served with the proper proportions of vinified products, seem to be as healthy as it gets. So (I think) are Thai and other Asian regimens. And I think Sandy may have misread my previous screed: I like Pal’s food just fine, and if I disliked older people I would have to be somewhat of a hypocrite because I am one.

I agree with some of the early posts – Where are the listings for Bloomfield? We have some fantastic restaurants. Spice is one of them – and they always have an ad in Baristanet- right under this article as a matter of fact! Their food is terrific and so is the atmosphere. Is the fact that they were left out some sort of typographical error?

  26. POSTED BY Geoff Gove  |  December 29, 2010 @ 2:30 pm

You don’t have to live in Bloomfield to party at Pianos this Friday. I see they’re having dinner theater at 8:30 and Karaoke in the other room.
