In what may be seen as an act of God, Baristaville deer destined to be “managed” Tuesday in the ongoing Essex County hunt at Eagle Rock and Hilltop Reservations, will get a stay of execution due to yet another winter storm in the forecast. According to County Executive Joseph N. DiVincenzo, Jr. this missed hunting date will not be made up, and the deer management program will resume on Thursday, February 3, as scheduled.
While all parking areas and roads inside the two reservations will be closed to the public on the hunt days for obvious safety reasons, the Highlawn Pavilion in West Orange will remain open for business as usual. Customers can enter the park via Eagle Rock Avenue and use the valet parking service.
According to Michael Mahle, the restaurant’s spokesperson, venison is on the menu as a periodic Chef’s Special item throughout the year, although he was very clear about the fact that they aren’t serving local deer.
Though it’s not for the squeamish, animal rights activists or political vegetarians, this trailer gives a good sense of what it takes to hunt and butcher a deer. Viewers have been advised… Anyone have any good recipes?
