Saying “Oui” to Affinage Cheese Shop

As a fan of Brie, Havarti and the occasional Cracker Barrel cheddar block purchased from A&P, ShopRite or Kings, I started salivating when I heard a gourmet cheese shop called Affinage (the French term for aging cheese) that opened near Calandra’s Bakery on Route 46 in Fairfield earlier this winter.

Would my palette be sophisticated enough to appreciate the artisanal or hand-crafted cheeses the store offers?  Would I be able to find the aromatic, runny cheeses I scarfed down on my honeymoon in France?  Yes! Continue Reading

GR Jitney Fares Start Tuesday, 2/7

We told you a few weeks ago, but thought we’d remind you that there’ll be no more free rides on the Glen Ridge Jitney after Tuesday, February 7. From then on, a fare pilot program will be in effect, through Tuesday, May 31, 2011, at which time a permanent fare policy will be instituted. During that period, anyone wishing to ride on the Jitney must pay a fare.

The fee structure is as follows:
Monthly Pass Card $25.00/month
10 Trip Books $20.00
One way ride purchased on Jitney $3.00 (exact change only)

The Weekend: Wrestling, Laughs, Fashion & Music

The 2011 Essex County Wrestling Tournament will kick off tonight, Friday (Jan. 28) at Essex County Codey Arena in West Orange at 6 p.m. This is the first time the high school tournament will be held in the county facility, which received a complete makeover in 2005. The tournament will end on Saturday (Jan. 29). The matches start on Saturday at 9 a.m. and the medal round starts at 2 p.m. Continue Reading

MFD Still Digging as Yesterday’s Sun Set

Montclair resident Michael Reitman caught the MFD doing a bit of twilight shoveling after yesterday’s snow storm unexpectedly dumped more than a foot of new covering on everything, including the town’s fire hydrants.

The township of Montclair requests that residents help to clear snow from around the hydrants, as a community service. While some do, it’s still sometimes necessary for firefighters to dig out hydrants — at least for this one on Grove Street, near Applegate Farms Ice Cream Parlor. Continue Reading

Coffee with…Jonathan B. Hall

In September 2010, Jonathan B. Hall, joined Central Presbyterian Church, one of Montclair’s oldest churches, as the new music director.

Since he came to Montclair, the community has enjoyed his musical talents at Sunday worship services and at events, including Halloween and Christmas concerts.

In addition to his role as music director, Hall is a composer (he is a member of the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers also known as ASCAP), writer, American Guild of Organists Fellow and amateur genealogist. Continue Reading

Warrants Issued for MSU’s Nicki Minaj Concert Scam

Warrants were issued last week by Montclair State University Police Department for Romarick Hough of Premier Talent Agency for allegedly scamming MSU’s Student Government Association out of $35,000.

The SGA thought they were paying for a concert featuring rapper Nicki Minaj for homecoming weekend last fall, until the rapper tweeted that she had never heard of the concert plans. Continue Reading
