Baristanet’s own “Comment Czar” Kaity Creasy sent us this photo of the stairs to the Bloomfield train station, which added a bit of treachery to her morning commute. She said “I walked from my apt to the Bloomfield station, practically in the street for half of the walk bc sidewalks weren’t shoveled.”
But she made it to the platform, and an iced-over NJ Transit train took her where she needed to go.
Another Baristaville commuter, Steve Lee, shared this early morning photo from the Glen Ridge train platform.

After the 5 a.m. GR school snow day wake up call and the sound of the plows on my street, there was nothing to do but head outside and assess the damage. Like everyone else in Baristaville, I was snow stunned by what I saw. This was not the six inches we were promised, and the plow debris came up to my knees.
But, I couldn’t deny that it was beautiful and not too cold. I grabbed a shovel and started the day’s work, in the company of only a few other people awake and digging out.
One neighbor began the mile walk to the midtown-direct train with a good attitude, and another stopped to chat from the window of his very large SUV. One on foot and one in a tank, both smiling. I love my block. Continue Reading
The 135th Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show takes place this year on February 14 and 15 at Madison Square Garden. Anyone from Baristaville showing a dog this year? Please let me know at pets@baristanet.com.
Of all the days to highlight the county’s snow removal efforts so far this winter, Essex County Executive Joseph DiVincenzo choose to do it outside today in the middle of a snow storm. So no matter how much snow accumulated, there was no way DiVincenzo could reschedule the press conference without provoking an inescapable irony. Continue Reading
“If you want to make a good pizza, you have to understand bread,” said Dan Richer, chef/owner at Arturo’s Osteria and Pizzeria in Maplewood. Richer should know: he has devoted the last year and half to perfecting his bread making skills. The result can be tasted in Arturo’s delicious, crisp thin-crusted pies, as well as in the fresh-baked loaves the restaurant sells every day.
Richer was inspired by frequent visits to the now-defunct East Village restaurant Una Pizza Napoletana, whose owner Anthony Mangieri had achieved cult-like status among pizza obsessives. Continue Reading

Amidst the tumultuous and contentious world that often characterizes Bloomfield politics, Yoshi Manale was selected to be the new township administrator at the regularly-scheduled council meeting on Monday night.
The appointment followed the resignation of township administrator Fred Carr, which was unanimously accepted by the council. Mayor Raymond McCarthy, Robert Ruane and Peggy O’Boyle Dunigan voted in favor of Manale, while Nicolas Joanow and Janice Mayly voted against. Michael Venezia abstained from the vote, and Bernard Hamilton was absent. Continue Reading
Got books? Well of course you do…you’re an enlightened literary human being. If you love to read, the chances are that you — like some 16 million Americans — now own an e-reader device, too. And this may be causing you a bit of book-buyer’s dilemma. You love your local bookstore, but it’s just so much easier to shop in your pajamas from home, click “buy,” and in less than a minute the text is on your iPad (or Nook) and you’re ready to read.
I love my iPad. I also adore my local booksellers. I love to walk to town, chat with other readers, and browse. I love the cozy corner chair by the sunny window, the shelves stacked with titles my friend/neighbor/favorite booksellers have hand-selected and read through. Continue Reading
I was very glad to see this post. The running in the street around here drives me crazy, mostly because the the majority of the runners I've encountered (not every runner)seem to think that it's their right to take up half the street when what they are doing is in fact illegal.
And let's not be silly. Yes, concrete is hard on the joints, but the pavement isn't that much better. It's not like the roads are made of track rubber.
