Montclair Paperie Shuts its Doors

BY  |  Monday, Jan 24, 2011 3:06pm  |  COMMENTS (3)

In an email message to her customers, Montclair Paperie’s owner Zori Levine blames the economy for the impending closing of her Valley Road retail storefront on January 31, after 9 years of business.

Unfortunately, the current economic climate paired with the online competition has made doing business as a retail establishment no longer possible.

While there are now major bargains to be had — Levine has slashed the price of her inventory to 50 – 70% of the original prices — the disappearance of another independent retail shop in Baristaville is disheartening to many. In addition to the overall implications for the local business environment, in her email, Levine points to another ramification of Paperie’s closing: the loss of two jobs.

I would also like to mention that I am unable to keep my two key players, Patty Sochaski and Gina Enberg. They are both amazing, reliable employees that over the years, have added immeasurable value to Montclair Paperie.

Levine will continue to run the custom invitation end of her business from her home office in Upper Montclair. She can be reached through her same contact information, and is happy to provide job references for her employees.

Do you shop local? What stores would you mourn the loss of? Take our poll and let us know how often you spend money on indie stores in Baristaville.

Dreaming Small: Downsizing In Essex County

BY  |  Monday, Jan 24, 2011 1:30pm  |  COMMENTS (26)

If you are “somewhere between the age of 40 and death” –a phrase Mame used on Broadway to describe her aging friend, Vera Charles — now may be a good time to start thinking about where you want to live for the rest of your life. For some, the answer may be the same place you live now. Or, you could (or might have to) downsize.

“You mean when you sell all your stuff and move into a smaller space?” my English professor friend, Peggy Samuels, of Glen Ridge asked me. “One thing I know is that husbands and wives rarely agree on what to do.” Peggy could see trading her charming Victorian for a modern, loft-like condominium space in Glen Ridge. Her husband, Lester, hears the siren song of New York City. For now, “inertia” has got the best of them. Continue Reading

Ongoing Budget Woes for 2011: An Op-Ed by Martin Schwartz

BY  |  Monday, Jan 24, 2011 12:00pm  |  COMMENTS (33)

The following is an opinion-editorial.

Despite Council promises, residents have not been able to engage in a serious line by line 2011 municipal budget analysis to date — similar to the process the BOE wisely undertook this year. Had we done so, it might have produced a different decision for MAC after analyzing the benefits.

Alternatively, if the Council had at least a serious discussion, as requested by Ward Councilor Cary Africk — and then still decided to cut funding for the Montclair Arts Council — one could reasonably disagree. But there was no public review of the ramifications or trade-offs from killing MAC. And that’s the problem – no real process. The Manager and Mayor on their own, told the MAC chair that the Arts Council’s funding was not being put into the budget this year. MAC then folded. Continue Reading

Much Ado About Dry Cleaning

BY  |  Monday, Jan 24, 2011 10:00am  |  COMMENTS (32)

It’s a classic case of “he said/he said,” and this post is Baristanet’s own People’s Court, only instead of Judge Milian hearing the case, our readers get to sit on the bench.

A week or so ago, a Watchung Plaza Dry Cleaners customer sent us this photo and scenario about a dress that was ruined in the course of being cleaned. The label says “dry cleaning only” yet it came out with the white stained with black dye. The owner and our tipster can’t agree on where the blame lies and how to resolve the dispute. The customer feels wronged and the proprietor feels falsely accused.

We’re turning the case over to the commenting community for a verdict — or at least some candid opinions. Continue Reading

There is No Joy in Baristaville, the Mighty Jets Have Bombed Out

BY  |  Monday, Jan 24, 2011 8:38am  |  COMMENTS (7)

The second half comeback was exciting to behold, but it was one touchdown short of taking the Jets to the Superbowl. Crying, moaning and gnashing of teeth are all welcome in the comments, and we’ll also except gloating from the Steelers fans among us.

No AFC Champions merchandise for us, but you can still buy your Jets 2011 Flight Crew Swimsuit Calendar on the Jets website. Pitchers and catchers report in three weeks.

qba, the Cuban Food Truck, Finds a Home

BY  |  Friday, Jan 21, 2011 4:00pm  |  COMMENTS (10)

The floral motif of qba: The Cuban Kitchen‘s food truck has been a familiar sight at Watchung train station in Montclair and parts of Jersey City and NYC for much of last year. It speaks of qba’s popularity and success that the truck – or rather the food and talent within – has now found a permanent parking spot in a new (non-mobile) home on the corner of Watchung Ave and North Fullerton. Orbis bistro had exited the space recently, and perhaps Cuban food is exactly what the plaza needs.

From truck to restaurant and possibly the nation, qba, an acronym for ‘quick, but authentic,’ has lofty ambitions, with the inaugural Montclair brick-and-mortar possibly being a springboard for a chain of quick-serve Cuban restaurants.

Lynna Martinez, CEO and founder, told Baristanet she hoped to have the restaurant open “by February 1st, if not sooner.” It will serve “flavorful Cuban classics that are slow cooked, but served fast.”

Montclair resident Martinez said qba, which was picked as one of the Star Ledger Munch Mobile’s Best of the Season in September, will continue to combine authentic Cuban flavors with a modern kick, including items such as its “Best” Cubano sandwich, the qban – a pulled pork sandwich, and empanadas.

Click here for a sneak peak at qba‘s new digs.

Congrats to qba! More news when we have it, and review to come.
