This just in from the Montclair police:
Drug Arrests
On 2/23/11 at approximately 7:00 PM, detectives conducted a raid on a North Mountain residence after obtaining search warrants targeting the residence for involvement in drug trafficking. Upon gaining entry to the residence, detectives located, among others, two males. While searching a second floor bedroom, detectives found a large bag containing fifty-seven bags of marijuana, two digital scales commonly used to weigh marijuana for packaging and distribution, and an assortment of drug packaging materials. Further investigation revealed that Kyle Harris was responsible for this contraband and he was placed under arrest.

While conducting a search of a first floor bedroom used by the suspect, detectives located a box containing fifty rounds of .38 ammunition. An Essex County Sheriff’s K-9 responded to the scene to check for firearms, but none were located in the residence. Detectives are continuing in investigating any links of firearms to the residence and the occupants.

A further check of the bedroom resulted in the discovery of thirty-five folds of heroin. The second man was also placed under arrest and transported to headquarters.

Howard, 23, of Montclair, was charged with possession of a controlled dangerous substance, possession of a controlled dangerous substance with intent to distribute, possession of a controlled dangerous substance with intent to distribute within one thousand feet of Montclair Kimberley Academy School, possession of a controlled dangerous substance with intent to distribute within five hundred feet of the public property of the Van Vleck House, and possession of drug paraphernalia with intent to distribute. Bail was set at $25,000.

The other man, a 22 year old from Montclair, was charged with possession of a controlled dangerous substance, possession of a controlled dangerous substance with intent to distribute, possession of a controlled dangerous substance with intent to distribute within one thousand feet of Montclair Kimberley Academy School, and possession of a controlled dangerous substance with intent to distribute within five hundred feet of the public property of the Van Vleck House. Bail was set at $35,000. Both are scheduled to be transported to the Essex County Jail.

Anyone wishing to report drug activity is asked to call 973-509-4720.

“Though the detectives were able to identify and arrest two males involved in this drug distribution ring, it is concerning that their apprehension was made in an area where we do not typically receive reports associated with heroin trafficking. Perhaps these two men chose this location because they mistakenly believed that their criminal activity would go unnoticed. These arrests show that drug trafficking can occur virtually anywhere, and I ask that residents report any suspicious behavior that they see to assist in identifying and investigating possible crimes occurring. It is disturbing that these men had ammunition in the residence without explanation, and I am hopeful that the continuing investigation will perhaps remove another gun from the streets.”

Charges Filed
On 2/18/11 at approximately 10:40 AM, police received a report from a parking enforcement officer that occurred on 2/17/11 at approximately 12:30 PM. The enforcement officer stated that she was issuing a summons to a vehicle parked in the Plymouth Street Lot for an overtime meter parking violation when she was confronted by a female, stating that she would not pay the ticket. The enforcement officer placed the ticket on the windshield of the vehicle, but the female removed the ticket and threw it to the ground before entering her vehicle. The female then exited the vehicle, retrieved the summons, and re-entered the vehicle.
The enforcement officer was checking other meters when, it was reported, that the vehicle occupied by the female, placed the vehicle in reverse and accelerated toward the enforcement officer. The victim was able to run out of the way of the speeding vehicle and there were no injuries reported. The vehicle, described as a black Nissan Sentra, exited the lot and drove north on South Fullerton Avenue.
As a result of further investigation, detectives identified the 24 year old Bloomfield woman who was charged with harassment and given a court date.

Attempted Burglary

On 2/23/11 at approximately 10:20 PM, police responded to a single-family residence on Claremont Avenue a report of an attempted burglary. Upon arrival, police spoke to the victim, who stated that he was familiar with the possible suspect. The victim stated that he was in the residence at approximately 10:10 PM, when a female began ringing the doorbell to the house. The victim answered the door and told the female to leave, but the female repeatedly asked him for money. The victim denied this request and closed the door.

The female then continued to ring the doorbell and trying to open the door by turning the doorknob. When this was not successful, the female broke a glass pane on the front door in another attempt to gain entry to the residence. The female fled the area when another resident arrived on scene, and the suspect was last seen walking north on Midland Avenue.

The suspect is described as a light-skinned black female, 5’0”, in her forties. She was last seen wearing a blue knit hat, beige overcoat, and blue jeans. Police searched the area for the suspect, but were unable to locate her.

Anyone with further information is asked to contact Detective Joseph Anderson at 973-509-4706.

Burglary Arrest

On 8/26/10 at approximately 7:50 AM, police responded to a residence on Claremont Avenue on a report of an entry to a motor vehicle. Upon arrival, police spoke to the victim who stated that he parked his Isuzu Rodeo in the residence’s rear lot the previous night at approximately 11:00 PM. When he returned to the lot the following morning at approximately 7:30 AM, he discovered that his vehicle’s front driver’s side window had been broken out and that his vehicle had been rummaged through. It appeared to police on scene that the suspect had attempted to pry open the window using a tool, but had shattered the window instead.

Approximately twenty minutes after arriving on scene, police received a report from another resident who had parked his vehicle in the same lot and wanted to report that there was a theft from his vehicle as well. This victim stated that he had parked his Honda Civic in the lot on 8/25/10 at approximately 11:00 PM. When he returned to the vehicle the following morning at approximately 7:30 AM, he discovered that the vehicle’s front driver’s side window had been smashed. While checking the interior of the vehicle, this victim discovered that his black Garmin Nuvi GPS, valued at $150, had been stolen from inside the Honda.

As a result of an ongoing investigation, detectives identified a 38 year old man from Montclair as a suspect in these incidents. He was placed under arrest on 2/23/11 at approximately 3:20 PM, after police located him at the intersection of Bloomfield Avenue and South Willow Street. He was charged with two counts of burglary and one count of theft. Bail was set at $40,000.

This is the second time in as many months that this person has been arrested for burglary. He was previously charged in January after detectives identified him as the suspect in a burglary that occurred on the 11th on Valley Road.

“This is the second time in as many months that this person has been arrested for burglary.” So was he out on bail for the first charge or already free to rob again? How about some deterrent sentences?

fly, I was thinking the same thing. Also, who determines the bail these days?

    * break a few car windows and take $150? $40,000
    * sell heroin, weed, and (probally) have an illegal gun? $25-35,000
    * Try and run over another person? $0

    What’s Jaywalking, $100,000?

    *probably* not probally!

Can anyone say “revolving door justice?” Outrageous that these Newark courts allow this.

That’s quite a dope operation on N. Mountain. Surprisingly low bail. Older kids living at home with clueless parents? It would be interesting to hear more about this.

I would love to see Santorum get the nod. Maybe then the politically comatose members of society will wake up.
