In 1967, legendary British rockers Dave Mason and Steve Winwood formed Traffic with Jim Capaldi and Chris Wood, launching multiple careers and giving the world an iconic band. Mason went on to a successful solo career playing with many of the rock industry’s most notable musicians including Jimi Hendrix, Michael Jackson, The Rolling Stones, Eric Clapton, George Harrison, Fleetwood Mac and Cass Elliot.
Mason’s best known song — “Feelin’ Alright,” recorded by Traffic in 1968 — has been covered by dozens of artists, including Joe Cocker, who had a major hit with the song in 1969. His 1977 mega-hit “We Just Disagree,” has thrived through the decades, and continues to be a staple on classic rock play lists. Over the last decade, Mason has actively toured across the United States, performing about 100 concerts a year. In 2008 he released 26 Letters 12 Notes, his first album in 20 years. The “earthy, good-time rock & roll, is overflowing with tasty, bluesy guitar licks, soulful vocals, and touches of everything from funk to zydeco,” said one review.
Now, just back from an Asian tour, Mason and his band come to Montclair’s Outpost in the Burbs on Friday, February 18 at 8 p.m. Please not that this show will be in the Outpost’s big venue, the First Congregational Church on South Fullerton Avenue in Montclair.

No Kevin, that would be Levon. You should know that by now… And by the way, the term is one of endearment when directed towards Levon and not supposed to be taken literally, as all the commenters did on Saturday. Ringo Starr (the second greatest drummer in the world
) called him that at a recent Ramble and others generously refer to him that way as well. It’s not about technique but maybe more about spreading the love… sort of like with Uncle Jerry. Didn’t know I was striking such a raw nerve there with the affectionate moniker.

I saw Dave Mason a few years ago at the Baker Theater in Dover, NJ. He put on a great show and is a superb musician. Unfortunately, the venue was only about half full. Nevertheless, he played his heart out to the people who were there. Unfortunately I can’t make this show. If you are a fan of music from the late 60s and the 70s, this is a must see show.
