You’ve got a transit village. The Christie Administration announced today that Montclair will receive $200,000 to fund a project under a competitive FY 11 Local Aid grant program.
Montclair is among 33 municipalities or counties statewide sharing approximately $7.6 million in grants under four state-funded Local Aid programs. The programs – Transit Village, Centers of Place, Bikeways and Safe Streets to Transit – are part of New Jersey’s $200 million Local Aid program.
“These grants will support a variety of safety and quality-of-life projects at the local level without burdening local property taxpayers,” said NJDOT Commissioner James Simpson. “The level of competition demonstrates how valuable these grants are to local officials who make difficult spending decisions each year.”
Montclair will receive a $200,000 grant through the Transit Village program for a streetscape improvement project near the NJ TRANSIT Bay Street Station. Grants under the Transit Village program promote economic revitalization and mixed-use development in designated Transit Village zones.
Last July, Governor Christie designated the area around Bay Street Station as a Transit Village, in recognition of Montclair’s ongoing efforts to create walkable, mixed-use neighborhoods near that public transportation center.
NJDOT provides 75 percent of the grant amount when a town awards a contract and the remaining 25 percent upon completion of the project.

Montclair applied for $200,000 for “Wayfinding” projects and $400,000 for streetscape improvements. We have not been told which project was approved. The area in question is primarily Glenridge Ave by the train tracks.

Oh yeah, I remember Wayfinding. Wasn’t that program canceled in shame?
