One of the fathers of the “Jersey Shore Sound” — also known as “the “funk and soul” of NJ — Southside Johnny is back in his home state and ready to have a party at the Wellmont on Saturday, February 26.
Southside (so nicknamed because of his bent toward the Blues sounds of the Southside of Chicago) has a new album out ( Pills and Ammo), and after more than 30 years of singing Jersey style, he and his band are still brassing on full steam ahead — with no holds barred — playing good time rock and roll with sincerity and heartfelt emotion (listen for yourself here and read what Southside has to say about his new album here).
Baristanet has two pairs of tickets to give away to the people with the most convincing answer to the question below. Enter as a comment (no emails, please). The contest will close at 6 p.m. today.
QUESTION: Why do you need a fix of Southside’s Jersey Shore Sound this week?

Check out Southside and his band as they pour out some Jersey style music on the Imus Show in 2006. If this doesn’t make you want to party with the band, then you must be from out of state.

Need to reminise about the old days hanging at the shore listening to south side johnny and one nite while in a small club in asbury Bruce showed up just to jam with the band.
After graduating from college I use to hang out down the shore on the weekends where I met my friend Susan. Susan and I didn’t have much in common. I was from North Jersey and she was from South Jersey. I am Black and she is White. My taste in music was Motown and hers Rock n Roll. But out of our differences grew a great friendship. I learned I was a “Bennie”, I learned that I didn’t have to go to the Ink Well just to have a good time at the beach the Jersey Shore was just as good, and Motown was not better than Rock n Roll. Susan taught me all about the shore from Sandy Hook down to Cape May, how to avoid DWI traps, but most importantly Susan taught me about the shore’s music. SouthSide Johnny, Bruce Springsteen, Don Henley, etc… One Sunday night as Susan and I were wrapping up our weekend she asked if I wanted to go to Asbury Park to see a band, at the time I had know idea who the band was, I said no I don’t have any money, she said she would pay, so off we went to a small dive on the boardwalk in Asbury. I learned a very important lesson the night: I thought Motown had soul, but those “white boys” in SouthSide Johnny and the Asbury Jukes really had soul! I Had A Great Party!!! Susan and I recently turned 50 and we need a fix of Southside’s Jersey Shore Sound.
In this clip 18 ” was expected. Well enough snow here ,now it’s time to party, with Johnny.
I need to get down and dirty this weekend. Southside Johnny and the Jukes is the fix I need to put me in that special place…
I need those tickets because life is short and a night with Southside and the Jukes is what life is all about. This is the last dance, the last chance…
1) We have no plans
2) The kids are both away for that night
3) This promises to be a great show
4) The above three never happen at the same time
I’m having some heavy duty oral surgery on Thursday and will be on oxycodone all weekend. What better way to see Southside Johnny than to be legally buzzed?
Because just when I think the going is good, my girlfriend get in an accident and the company I’m working for is going through “financial difficulties” which probably means layoffs!
Thanks to all who entered and sorry I can’t give you all tickets. Our winners are: Helen Allen and anothermontclairmom. Hopefully the rest of you will get there on your own and have a great time.
This is going to be a great show. I wish I could go, but now that I’m unemployed, my better half won’t let me spend any money without a lengthy and complicated cost/benefit evaluation. When I tell her that the benefit will be more singing and air guitar performances from our staircase, she’s not convinced of their fiscal value. … Hmmmnn …. Maybe I could sneek in. Yeah, good idea, MB, try to sneek in and get caught, arrested and spend the night shivering on a hard wood chair at the Montclair Police station.
Have fun at the show!
