BY  |  Wednesday, Mar 30, 2011 3:30pm  |  COMMENTS (10)

Last week, the Meatball King of New Jersey, Johnny “Meatballs” DeCarlo,  visited the Kettle Kitchen to teach us the secret to his famous meatballs.

Between you, me and the blogosphere, the secret is: caramelized onions.  I didn’t grow up with  caramelized onions in my meatballs, but after enjoying a couple, it’s a pretty good idea.

If you’re in the mood for some meatballs,  you could pick up a six pack of Johnny’s Meatballs in Sunday Gravy at Corrado’s.  Or, if you’d like to make them yourself, watch the video to see how Johnny does it and follow the recipe below.  Salute! Continue Reading

Should Crimes Against Animals Be Elevated to Felony Status?

BY  |  Wednesday, Mar 30, 2011 2:00pm  |  COMMENTS (38)

By now, many of you are aware of the horrendous story out of Newark concerning a severely emaciated one-year-old Pit Bull named “Patrick” who was found by building caretakers at the bottom of a trash compactor in a housing complex located at 195 First Street. The dog was barely alive and hardly moving in the trash chute when he was found by a maintenance man who called authorities.

Kisha C. Curtis, 27, of Newark, was charged in municipal court on March 29 with animal abuse for leaving her dog unattended at the Garden Spires apartment complex in Newark, it was announced by Acting Essex County Prosecutor Carolyn A. Murray.

“This is a very sad case of a helpless dog left unattended,’’ Murray said. “The information we have now indicates the defendant tied the dog to a railing and left the state of New Jersey for more than a week.’’ Continue Reading

A clothesline filled with laundry will hang along Church Street in Montclair, but the decorated clothes flapping on the line are there to send a strong graphic message — a call to fight violence against women. On April 2, witness or participate in the Clothesline Project, presented by Essex County Rape Care Center, a Family Service League program and New Jersey’s designated Rape Care Center for Essex County. (in the event of rain, the clothesline can be viewed at Family Service League, same day and time, 204 Claremont Ave. Montclair). Continue Reading

Just When You Thought it was Spring…

Did you put the shovel away? Wishful thinking, but seemingly it’s not what Mother Nature wanted.

There’s a winter storm watch in effect starting late Thursday night through Friday evening for northeast New Jersey, calling for heavy snow and accumulations of 5 to 10 inches. Oh, and throw in gusty winds up to 30 mph. Snow is expected to be “wet and heavy,” and could bring down tree branches and power lines. The morning commute is a concern, with slippery road conditions and poor visibility.

Not too late for one more snow day, I guess.

Cups in Clifton: Where Teens Make the Frozen Yogurt Scene

BY  |  Tuesday, Mar 29, 2011 4:00pm  |  COMMENTS (5)

It was about quarter to 10 on Saturday night and we were going to Zinburger in Clifton when we saw a line of excited teenagers loudly waiting for something. It looked like the opening of a new nightclub or maybe there’d been a sighting of Justin Beiber. But no. All the fuss was for a regular old suburban ice cream shop, or make that a frozen yogurt shop. Despite chilly temperatures, people were waiting half an hour to enter Cups, a new concept restaurant that lets the customer pull the handle on as many different flavors of soft-serve frozen yogurt as they like, and pay — at the end — by the ounce. It’s owned by the same group that owns Zinburger.

Alex Torpey Talks to the Crowd at Bunny's

A lively crowd of several dozen people turned out at Bunny’s last night to meet South Orange Village President hopeful Alex Torpey.  Although it was impossible to determine, some might have been lured by the free beer and pizza.

Bunny’s doyenne Leslie Pogany introduced the candidate by slyly noting, “History has proven that you can’t get elected if you don’t have a party at Bunny’s.”

Briefly addressing the audience, Torpey said the citizens of South Orange deserve to know more about what is going on in their town.  “I want to make sure your voice is heard,” he said to applause and a cry of “hear, hear.”

“Is he old enough to run?” joked Clem Bottone, perched on a barstool.  A Somerset resident, Bottone attended Seton Hall University in the late 1980s.  “I think South Orange is up and coming,” said Bottone.  “There are more restaurants and businesses now; it’s on the upside.” Continue Reading

Shelby the Dog “Speaks Up” at Bloomfield Council Meeting

BY  |  Tuesday, Mar 29, 2011 1:30pm  |  COMMENTS (21)

Along with the ongoing issues of the proposed cell phone tower on Broad Street and the fate of the animal shelter, the rumor of a methadone clinic being opened in the Watsessing area drew a crowd to last night’s Bloomfield Council meeting. Due to the large turnout, the meeting was moved to the council chambers to accommodate the crowd.

The first speaker during the public comment session was Joe Dwyer, accompanied by his dog, Shelby, who was adopted from the Bloomfield Animal Shelter after being abused and abandoned. She is now a therapy dog that goes to hospitals and nursing homes to give comfort and cheer to the patients. Mr. Dwyer has written a book, Shelby’s Grace, about her journey. He and his wife, Geralynn, brought Shelby to the meeting in support of the animal shelter. Continue Reading
