Shrink Wrap My Ride?

Holy plastic wrap, Batman! Is the shrink wrap villain on the loose?

A tipster shot this photo on Saturday, March 26th, at around 10 a.m. in Montclair Kimberley Academy’s Upper School campus parking lot? We wonder if it’s a senior prank, a security measure or an effort to keep the doors from falling off. One of the Baristas says that she “did this to someone’s car in high school and was ‘banned’ from prom because of it.”

What’s your take on this unusual sighting? Is it an eco-unfriendly, lo-tech anti-theft device, evidence of MKA senioritis, or something entirely different?

BY  |  Monday, Mar 28, 2011 8:33am  |  COMMENTS (1)

Want to achieve Beatle-like success? First you’ll have to learn to think like one of the Fab Four.

“The Beatles were no accident. They wanted to be big. Bigger than Elvis. Bigger than anyone who went before, or came after,” say Richard Courtney and George Cassidy — the authors of Come Together: The Business Wisdom of the Beatles.

Courtney and Cassidy will sign copies of their new book (released today) at Words bookstore in Maplewood, located at 179 Maplewood Ave, on Thursday, March 31 at 7:30 p.m.

Come Together offers insight and motivation from the most successful rock band of all time and shows why the historic rock band is the ultimate business case study.

You can find out more about the book and its authors at http://beatlesbusiness.com.

Wine merchant and social media star Gary Vaynerchuk (aka @garyvee) will be at Watchung Booksellers Monday night touting his new book, “The Thank You Economy.”

I downloaded a sample of it from the iBook store the other day to check it out. I had to force myself not to download the whole book so I could get a signed copy at Watchung Monday night.

A Bulb Buying Guide for Spring

BulbsThere I was, two days before spring had officially arrived, tra-la-la’ing around my garden poking the earth with a stick saying, “Yes,  spring has arrived…..nothing can stop us now”

Then fade to white … literally. So it is my fault, the snow I mean. As anyone who has ever watched Scooby Doo will tell you never, ever say, “Nothing can stop us now.”

Maura McFadden, a senior at Glen Ridge High School, walked into an auditorium yesterday holding a grocery bag. She looked up at her classmate Rene Francolini, also a senior.

“Rene, I need you to eat some sorbet.”

“Huh?”

“Your choices are pineapple, strawberry, or coconut.”

It wasn’t a request.

My Favorite Place: Lotus Yoga

BY  |  Friday, Mar 25, 2011 1:30pm  |  COMMENTS (4)

I’ve done warrior pose in most of the yoga studios around Montclair, and they all have something to say for them. In some ways, one could argue, they’re all pretty much alike. You buy a package of a certain number of classes, check in with somebody at a computer, grab a mat, some blocks and a strap, and get in lotus position and wait until somebody tells you to sit up straight. Most of the instructors around town move between all the studios anyway, so it’s not like any one studio has a stable of teachers that’s head-and-shoulders above the rest.

I didn’t find my yoga home, however, until I followed yoga teacher Mary Paige Snell to her Monday morning gig at Lotus Yoga in Montclair. I instantly felt transported.

Large Black Dog Found in Montclair

BY  |  Friday, Mar 25, 2011 12:33pm  |  COMMENTS (6)

A couple living on Oxford Street in Montclair found “a lovely, large, black, long-haired dog with brown paws.” He is wearing a red collar with a PAWS tag but PAWS and Montclair Animal Control do not have him on record nor has anyone contacted them about a lost dog fitting the description.

He was found in their backyard with another stray who ran off before a leash could be found. The woman living at the home did check the second dog’s collar and found a tag with the name “Ozzie” and North Mountain Avenue address.

She said that she will keep him until someone claims him via Montclair Animal Control or the police.

Is this your dog? If so, please contact pets@baristanet.com

UPDATE: “Guinness” has been reunited with his family. He and Ozzie are brothers. A special thanks to Kristina and Carole from PAWS who helped me locate the owner.

I was very glad to see this post. The running in the street around here drives me crazy, mostly because the the majority of the runners I've encountered (not every runner)seem to think that it's their right to take up half the street when what they are doing is in fact illegal. And let's not be silly. Yes, concrete is hard on the joints, but the pavement isn't that much better. It's not like the roads are made of track rubber.
