Just months after Montclair’s Cupcake Stop won the Food Network’s Food Feuds for “Best Cupcake,” (the Red Velvet Cupcakes were the winners), the Montclair shop suddenly closed, leaving not a crumb of a clue as to where they went.
Their web site seems to have gone offline and their twitter feed says that they’re closing. Facebook says the same. The phone line is disconnected.
Their NY locations also are closed, according to New York Magazine.
Clearly something’s not right in the world of mini-cakes, which have become all the rage in Baristaville and beyond over the past few years. Cupcake Stop opened it’s Montclair bakery in May, 2010 taking over for the defunct Flour Patch. The location served as a baking headquarters for its mobile and NYC businesses.
Sorry to see you go, Cupcake Stop…
Which flavor will you miss most?

How long could a place just selling cupcakes last? I mean whats next a Cheesecake Factory.
Herb: Cupcakes are the rage. NYC and other large cities have several cupcake bakeries. There’s even a blog dedicated to them: http://www.cupcakestakethecake.blogspot.com/
Personally, I love cupcakes becasue they are portion-controlled!
That’s a shame. I hate to see good stores go out like a flame, with no explanation.
Cupcakes are so far in… that they are out. Short lived fad.
Ahhhhhh…..but the new fad is CAKE POPS. I’m working on a cake pop post. Cake on a stick what could be better?
It’s Porta-cake!
I think someone should open a bakery that sells nothing but cake wrecks.

And i was going to boycott them anyway! last week i was there 5 minutes after closing with 3 hungry children and they turned me away! And they had shelves full of cupcakes; and i had 3 crying kids.
Cupcake Stop. That’s exactly what happened. What’s the scoop on Sticky Buns? Seems like it’s always closed.
“i was there 5 minutes after closing with 3 hungry children and they turned me away!”
Let’s see, they turned you away because they were closed?
Hrobra prolly got the munchies after a dank session and ate up all inventory.
Hey yalls! Would like to tell a poem I wrote! Its called Death of my Childhood!
Death of my childhood.
Was riding chillwaves with my 3 hungry bros.
Driving around suburbia feeling depressed (via Arcade’s Fire).
Find mad danky dank on Mission Street.
Smoke sweet danky and listen to authentic buzzbands.
So blazed.
Need to find relevant foods.
Stop in to the Paneras to find foods.
So many lamestreamers trying to get “healthy”.
So many entry level alts “eating” soup.
So many cool dads trying to “connect” with their culturally enhanced tweens
Scared of angry bros from Missions Streets who jack the 711.
Probs gonna get effing “murdered”.
Just want to eat.
Go to the Cupcakes Stops.
Me and my chill bros will eat cupcakes.
Cupcakes Stops is closed.
Angry Cupcake Stops bro says hells no u cant eat cupcakes.
Where have “all” the cupcakes gone?
Sorta feel “sad” for Cupcakes Stops
H8 u Cupcakes Stops.
You killed my childhood.
What do u “think” abt my poem?
Did I crush it?
Do your kids “cry”?
Are cupcakes bullsh*t?
Yeah, turning customers away after closing may have to do with the fact that their registers were probably shut down for the day, credit card processing complete, security alarms about to be set…or perhaps they didn’t want your crying kids in the store.
Cupcakes are so 2007.
Cupcakes are so 2008, Cakepops are already going away, honest to goodness real bakeries, the ones that more substance over style is where the industry is headed. But if you want a real kick ass cool cupcake the only place east of the 15 to find them is Baker’s Dozen on Bellevue
It might have made more editorial sense for the Baristas’ intrepid, crack reportorial stafff to have first found out why in fact a cupcake store closed. THEN reported it to readers. What are “citizen-journalists” for if not to answer such big questions, after all?
And, just as Rick abd Ilsa will always have Paris, we’ll always still have Tastykake!
PS: According to today’s Record, the real new dessert-y thing is in fact “cake balls” or “cake bites.”
When you hit this one –Where have “all” the cupcakes gone?–I thought you might pull in some Peter Paul and Mary.
Cake balls or bites are the same as cake pops sans the stick. As for cake pops going away…. not quite yet. I made them for my son’s birthday party this weekend and out of 14 moms only one had ever heard of them. I do believe they are a trend though.
I might take requests. Chocolate cheesecake or strawberry cheesecake?
hrobrah…Bake some sweetdank into some dough throw some chillwhip on top and sell in front of the Post Office….Bingo….You’re an Entrepreneur! Scare those Girl Scouts away from your turf….U da man.
U got happy faced customers comin’ back for s’more.
I heard about cake pops for the first time last week via Starbucks. Apparently, Starbucks is introducing them to coincide with its 40th anniversary this week. I don’t care if cupcakes are a fad or not, I like ‘em. As I said, they’re portion controlled, are easier to make and to travel with, and they just look pretty. It’s a lot easier to practice your decorating skills on a cupcake than on a big cake.
Any discussion of “cake balls” belongs back over on the circumcision thread.
I would advise against going anywhere near the circumcision thread, unless you’re wearing riot gear.
the trend is over, it doesn’t mean that the best of the best won’t stay; just like past food trends (honey-mustard, chipotle, roasted garlic, and dulce de leche) there’s a period where everyone and everything is smothered in it, a pinnacle is reached, and only the best survive. Cake Pops (and all the incarnations of them) are where cupcakes were back in 2007. There are lots of interesting things happening with custards, not enough to call it a trend but enough to see a few interesting additions to menus alongside the standard creme caramel ~ we’ll all have to wait and see.
Like a little Serbian boy, I wondered off, walleroo.
Thank you for alerting me to the horror that awaited me.
Are there no workhouses?
Wow, so sorry to hear this about Cupcake Stop! Is it wrong for me to inquire about how much the rent was on that space??
