Montclair Police Blotter: Armed Robbery Arrest, Stolen Wine and Vodka

Armed Robbery Arrest
On 3/31/11 at approximately 11:10 PM, police responded to an apartment building on Elm Street on a report of a robbery. The victim, a twenty-three year old Montclair resident, stated that he was outside his building using his cell phone when he was approached by a male who demanded his money. The victim attempted to run into the building, but the suspect followed him into the building and forced the victim into a corner at the bottom of the staircase. The victim then displayed a large knife and again demanded that he victim give him his money. The victim attempted to defend himself and suffered a cut on his left hand from the knife.

The victim stated that he pushed past the suspect and ran out of the building into the complex’s courtyard, but was followed by the suspect. After a brief pursuit, the suspect abandoned the chase and was last seen by the victim running east bound on Elmwood Street.

The knife was described as having a black handle with a blade of approximately five inches in length. The victim reported that approximately $30 was taken from him by the suspect. The victim was transported to Mountainside Hospital for medical attention.
As a result of an ongoing investigation, police identified Kaili Richardson as the suspect in this incident. Richardson was taken into custody on 4/28/11 at approximately 4:50 PM from the Glen Ridge Police Department, who had arrested Richardson on that date. Richardson, 29, of Montclair, was charged with robbery, unlawful possession of a weapon, and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose. Bail is set at $150,000 and Richardson is scheduled to be transported to the Essex County Jail.

Burglary Arrest
On 4/28/11 at approximately 10:20 PM, police were dispatched to a business on Lackawanna Plaza on a report of a male attempting to break into a building. Upon arrival, police discovered that the second floor window of an adjoining building had been broken. The window was accessible from a rear roof of the building. Police proceeded to check the building, but did not locate a suspect.

Police spoke to the caller, who stated that he was in his apartment when he heard glass breaking. He looked outside and observed a heavy set white male break the aforementioned window. He then observed the suspect run south over some fences and then east on the south side of the building towards Lackawanna Plaza.

Police located a male, later identified as Evan Kitts, in the area of Glenridge Avenue and Greenwood Avenue. Kitts was bleeding from his hand. Police followed a trail of blood from the building, which led to the spot where Kitts was located. Kitts, 26, of Glen Ridge, was placed under arrest and charged with burglary. He was later released on his own recognizance.

Assault Arrest
On 4/28/11 at approximately 10:35 PM, officers responded to the Wellmont Theatre on a report of a security guard that had been assaulted. Upon arrival, police spoke to the victim, who was restraining a patron, later identified as a 24 year old from North Caldwell. It was reported that the suspect was in the process of being removed from the establishment by security for causing a disturbance when he began yelling and cursing at the staff and other patrons. As the suspect walked away, he struck the victim in the face with a closed fist. He was placed under arrest and charged with simple assault and disorderly conduct, and was later released.

Assault Arrest
On 4/27/11 at approximately 4:30 PM, police responded to the Quick Chek on Valley Road on a report of an assault. Upon arrival, police spoke to an employee at the store, who reported being assaulted by a male later identified as a 19 year old from Montclair. The victim stated that he was ringing up the suspect and another person when he reportedly observed the suspect take a lighter from the counter and place it in his pocket. The victim stated that after the suspect repeatedly refused to return the lighter, the man became angered and walked behind the counter, striking the victim in the face with a closed fist. The victim suffered a laceration over his left eyebrow as a result of the attack.

The suspect, who had been detained outside the store, was placed under arrest. He was not found to be in possession of a lighter at the time of the arrest. The 19 year old from Montclair, was charged with simple assault and later released.

Theft
On 4/28/11 at approximately 11:45 AM, police responded to Magnolia’s Wine and Spirits in the Upper Montclair Plaza in Upper Montclair on a report of a theft. Upon arrival, police spoke to an employee who reported that two bottles of wine had been stolen from the establishment on 4/25/11 at approximately 2:45 PM.

A check of surveillance video showed that a male entered the store on that date and approximate time. He was observed holding one or two bottles of wine that was later determined to be Cos D’Estornel, which are valued at $299 a bottle. He later left the store without anything in his hands and it is possible that the bottles were concealed in his clothing, as the bottles were not found in the store.

The male is described as a tall, thin, white male with black hair. He was last seen wearing glasses, a green, long-sleeved shirt and gray pants that stopped above his ankle.

Suspicious Activity
On 4/29/11 at approximately 2:00 AM, police responded to a single-family residence on Orange Road on a report of an individual possibly attempting to burglarize a garage. Upon arrival, police spoke to the caller, who stated that a neighbor had notified him that she had observed someone possibly trying to enter the victim’s detached garage. Police then spoke to the neighbor, who said that she was sitting on her back steps when she observed an unknown individual in a white T-shirt attempting to enter the garage. She then contacted her neighbor and was unable to provide a better description of the suspect. Police searched the property and surrounding area, but did not locate any suspicious person. There are no suspects at this time.

Vandalism
On 4/27/11 at approximately 11:55 PM, police responded to a single-family residence on Gates Avenue on a report of vandalism. Upon arrival, police spoke to the complainant, who stated that someone had shattered her front storm door, valued at $199. Police located a shattered alcohol bottle near the damaged door. The complainant stated that a household member had heard a noise earlier in the night, but assumed that it was noise caused by other siblings. When the complainant went to investigate the noise, she discovered the damage to the door. There are no suspects at this time.

Vandalism to a Motor Vehicle
On 4/28/11 at approximately 11:10 AM, police responded to an apartment building on Greenwood Avenue on a report of vandalism to a motor vehicle. Police spoke to the victim, who said that she parked her Ford Explorer in the property’s rear lot at approximately noon on the 27th. When she returned to the vehicle the following morning at approximately 7:00 AM, she discovered that the rear window to the vehicle had been smashed. There are no suspects at this time.

Vandalism to a Motor Vehicle
On 4/29/11 at approximately 11:25 AM, police responded to the Montclair High School on a report of vandalism to a motor vehicle. Police spoke to the victim, who stated that she parked her Jeep Liberty on Midland Avenue near Brunswick Road on that date at approximately 8:50 AM. When she returned to the vehicle approximately two and a half hours later, she discovered that someone had scratched “LAX” into the paint on the driver’s side door.

Theft
On 4/28/11 at approximately 6:25 PM, police received a report from a Forest Street resident concerning a theft. The victim stated that she ordered approximately $100 in hair product online on 3/20/11. Five days later, she realized that she had not yet received the package. She contacted the postal service and learned that the package was confirmed as being delivered to her apartment building on 3/22/11. She believes that the package was stolen from a common hallway in her building, as the package was too large to fit in her designated mailbox.

The victim also stated that she ordered a Coach bag, valued at $157.83, online on 4/21/11 and received an e-mail that the bag had been delivered on 4/27/11 at approximately 12:25 PM. It is believed that the package was left outside the front door of her apartment building. The victim reported that she did not receive either of the deliveries and assumes that someone had stolen them before she received them. There are no suspects at this time.

Theft
On 4/28/11 at approximately 9:00 PM, police responded to Romany Liquor Shop on Glenridge Avenue on a report of a shoplifting. Upon arrival, police spoke to an employee who reported that a male had left the store without paying for a 750mL bottle of Ciroc Coconut Vodka, valued at $37.99. The employee stated that after taking the merchandise, he exited the store and walked northbound on North Willow Street from Glenridge Avenue. The suspect was last seen walking in the area of Forest Street.

The suspect is described as a black male, 6’0”-6’1”, and last seen wearing dark clothing, including a blue shirt and a red hat. The suspect has tattoos on both arms and his neck.
