UPDATE: Darren Hickman, the man pursued by police Saturday evening, has died. See story.
His Saturday evening leap from the 200 foot high span of the Goethals Bridge didn’t help him elude pursing NJ police, who were chasing the shoplifting suspect from the Short Hills Mall in Millburn — nor did the escape stunt seem to cause him critical injuries. According to silive.com, Darren Hickman, a 46 year old from Staten Island, fled after his car burst into flames following a crash into a police vehicle on the ramp leading to the Garden State. He landed in a marsh and appeared uninjured to arresting police.
Hickman is believed to have stolen a Louis Vuitton purse, and was out on bail after being charged with the theft of a similar purse, valued at $2,500, last week. Traffic was tied up for hours, following the incident.

Let’s hear it for wetlands conservation !
C’mon, this was supposed to run 4/1, right?
A great ad for Louis Vuitton: “They’re crashing their cars and jumping off bridges for our purses!”
I wonder if he is planning to go back next week to try again?
Can we just pause and wonder how a purse could possibly be worth $2500, and how ostentatious and gullible someone would have to be to buy one (regardless of financial net worth)?
I know shoplifting at Short Hills Mall aint call and is just plain wrong, but holy crow that escapade sounds hi-def AWESOME!
*aint cool*
Next week, he will steal some Haband!
‘roo – he could probably sell it on Ebay for $2,000. I cannot imagine spending that much on a bag but that’s not even the high end of luxe. An Hermes bag can easily cost twice that amount.
He’ll need those stretch-infused waistbands to help cushion the fall, Nellie.
“He who steals my Haband, steals trash.”
Oh, but the embarrassment of being caught wearing Haband, Spiro.
From time to time, ‘gurl, I become aware of people displaying their objects in a way that communicates a certain pride in their own refinement. I admire many people who can afford such things, but they have neither the time nor the patience for it.
Probably Snookie looking for a bargain.
Do people still shop on eBay?
