Legendary jazz pianist and composer Chick Corea will join Montclair’s own Grammy-award winning bassist Christian McBride for conversation, live performances, and master classes at Jazz House Kids’ critically-acclaimed program, Inside the Jazz Note® on Thursday, June 2 at the South Orange Performing Arts Center.
Now in its fourth year, the Jazz House Kids event includes a rare one-on-one conversation and concert, as well as an afternoon Masterclass for high school band and choral students and their teachers. Both the day and evening sessions will feature live performances and a “behind-the-scenes” look from two of the world’s most sought after contemporary jazz musicians.
“We are thrilled that Chick Corea has given us an entire day to speak with and inspire music students and music lovers in our area,” said Melissa Walker, founder and executive director of Jazz House Kids. According to Walker, Corea’s participation in this year’s program embodies the organization’s mission of putting into the hands of our community the rich cultural, social and musical history of jazz to preserve the legacy and future of America’s original musical art form.
“During these challenging economic times and state budget cuts, the role of independent community arts organizations like Jazz House Kids becomes more critical to our children,” she said. “I cannot emphasize enough, the effect this level of mentorship has had on the students who were fortunate enough to attend our previous Inside the Jazz Note programs with Esperanza Spalding, Pat Metheny and Chris Botti.”
McBride — creative director, guest instructor and a board member for Jazz House Kids — will serve as host and master of ceremonies for both the student program and the evening session.
Inside the Jazz Note: An Evening Program of Musical Insights and Inspiration will begin at 7:30 p.m. The evening will include video and audio recordings, live concert performances and a lively audience Q&A.

I’ll answer too, just in case…
Kenny Garrett
@scs_in_nj , thanks for trying but jazz got to the tickets first. Hope you can go to the show anyway.
Yup, Kenny Garrett. There was a nice write-up about him in last week’s Glen Ridge Voice receiving an Honorary Doctorate Degree in Music from Berklee College of Music in Boston. Mr. Garrett was the commencement speaker too.
