BY  |  Friday, May 27, 2011 3:00pm  |  COMMENTS (0)

Baristaville seniors cleaned up all the prizes and honorable mentions in this year’s Essex County Senior Citizen Legacies Writing Contest. The contest asked participants to write essays about influential people or events in their lives, and the winners were judged on the author’s ability to share humorous, emotional, and rich descriptions.

The winners: Lester M. Bornstein of West Orange, Robert L. Petrus and Leah Johnston-Rowbotham of Montclair, and Kal Wagenheim of Millburn received an award certificate from the Essex County Division Services, a gift package, and read their stories at today’s luncheon at the Essex County Hospital Center.

The honorable mentions include: Carole Bailey and Sharon Sandusky of Montclair, Stanley Paluba of Bloomfield, and Douglas S. Stivison of Upper Montclair.

“The contest is a unique way for our older population to share their stories and describe the people and events that helped to shape their lives,” said Essex County Executive Joseph N. Divcenzo Jr. “Their stories make you laugh and they touch your heart. They provide us with a different perspective on historical events and what our society was like.” Continue Reading

Name Change Proposed for South Orange

BY  |  Friday, May 27, 2011 1:30pm  |  COMMENTS (17)

What’s in a name? Would a rose called otherwise really still smell as sweet? Will an Essex County municipality be the same place, without the word “township?”

Stay tuned for the answer, which should come in July. That’s when the Township of South Orange Village will decide if it will formally change its name to just simply “South Orange Village.” To some, it’s a big difference.

The issue was discussed at the May 26 Charter Review Committee public forum, along with other proposed name changes, including switching the titles of “Village President” to “Mayor” and the “Board of Trustees” to “Village Council.” Continue Reading

Escaping for the Weekend?

BY  |  Friday, May 27, 2011 12:00pm  |  COMMENTS (5)

I make a point of not going away for Memorial Day weekend, though that may be because I’m just not getting any shore house invites (what’s up with that?). While I could easily be persuaded to be a beachfront guest, I actually enjoy the quieter times here in busy Baristaville and thrive on not fighting the traffic. I also love the Glen Ridge parade (you can see me “marching” with the volunteer ambulance squad contingent) and the backyard BBQs.

If you’re amongst the masses of people headed out today, we thought you might take some guidance from the king of getting into and out of Baristaville, Josh Crandall of Clever Commute. Continue Reading

Ice Cream Shop Owner Fights for Her Dream

BY  |  Friday, May 27, 2011 8:56am  |  COMMENTS (24)

For Robin Garman, the idea of owning an ice cream shop seemed like a chance to quit the rat race and make a living the old-fashioned way.

Through a colleague at her hedge fund job, the former Glen Ridge resident discovered a brand of ice cream that weighed in at only 50 calories a serving and in December, she opened a D’lites franchise in West Caldwell. After 17 years in Glen Ridge, Garman moved to Caldwell in 2003 following the death of her husband.

But being an ice cream entrepreneur isn’t all chocolate sprinkles. First came the really lousy weather of this past winter, followed by the lousy weather of spring. Then came the local frozen yogurt phenomenon Cups in Clifton, which seemed to have a magnetic pull on every frozen-treat seeking teenager in Essex and Passaic Counties. And finally came Arnold Diaz.

Montclair’s Iconic Underground Cafe Soundz For Sale

BY  |  Thursday, May 26, 2011 4:15pm  |  COMMENTS (4)

The iconic Cafe Soundz, located at 320 Bloomfield Avenue in Montclair, will be closing for business on Labor Day, 2011, unless someone steps up to buy it.

According to owner Bobby Lisi, who has left his mark on two generations of customers, Soundz caters to a subculture, exclusively carrying underground clothing labels, footwear and a wide variety of electronic dance music. After 22 years, Lisi will be leaving the thriving business behind to follow his dreams in Costa Rica, where he and his wife plan to open an artist’s retreat. “Soundz is more than just a record shop and it’s my hope that someone will step up to keep it going.” Continue Reading

Montclair: Robbery With Assault on Chestnut

Thursday, May 26, 2011 3:59pm  |  COMMENTS (1)

Two men were robbed of groceries, then punched in the face by three males. Also $600 stolen from Beans on Church Street. From Lt. Scott Buehler:

Robbery

On 5/25/11 at approximately 10:20 PM, police responded to the area of Chestnut Street and Forest Street on a report of a robbery. Upon arrival, police spoke to the two victims, a twenty-one year old Montclair male and a twenty year old Montclair male. The victims told police that they were walking north on Forest Street with groceries in their hands when they heard a few males calling towards them as they crossed Chestnut Street. The victims stated that they were then approached by three black males in their early twenties wearing tank tops. One of the suspects was wearing cargo pants while the other two suspects wore jeans. The suspects attacked the victims by punching them in the face and stole a shopping bag containing the groceries. It is believed that the suspects fled southbound after the assault, as the grocery bag was found on Forest Street south of the incident location.

The twenty-one year old male suffered lacerations to his nose and face as a result of the assault and was transported to Saint Joseph’s Hospital for treatment.

Anyone with further information is asked to contact Detective Charles Cunningham at 973-509-4716.

Arrest

On 5/6/11 at approximately 5:30 PM, police were dispatched to Beans coffee shop on Church Street on a report of a theft. The caller, an employee at the establishment, stated that at approximately 5:20 PM on that date, an individual walked into the store and asked for change. The employee opened the drawer and found that she was not able to make change with cash that was in the register. The suspect then began walking around the store while the employee went outside for a moment to recover the chairs and table that are kept outside on the sidewalk. When she walked back into the store, she observed the suspect standing behind the counter. When she asked the suspect what he was doing, his answer was ambiguous. The suspect then fled the store and was last seen walking east in the area of the Clairidge Cinema. The employee then checked the register and discovered that approximately $600 was taken from the register.

As a result of a continuing investigation, detectives identified Joshua Cain as a suspect in this incident. Detectives located Cain on Union Street on 5/24/11 at approximately 7:20 PM and placed him under arrest. Cain, 35, of Montclair was charged with theft of movable property. He was later released.

Theft

On 5/25/11 at approximately 8:00 PM, police responded to a Midland Avenue residence on a report of a stolen bicycle. The complainant stated that sometime after midnight on the 25th, her son’s bicycle had been stolen from the rear porch of their residence. The bicycle is described as a chrome and silver Mongoose BMX Elray with a yellow seat and yellow handle grips. The bicycle is valued at $150. There are no suspects at this time.

Anyone with further information is asked to contact the Juvenile Aid Bureau at 973-509-4733.

I was very glad to see this post. The running in the street around here drives me crazy, mostly because the the majority of the runners I've encountered (not every runner)seem to think that it's their right to take up half the street when what they are doing is in fact illegal. And let's not be silly. Yes, concrete is hard on the joints, but the pavement isn't that much better. It's not like the roads are made of track rubber.
