Who’s Stealing the Flower Baskets of Montclair?

Pat Gail, who owns a framing store in Watchung Plaza, once had a bench, a bistro table and a bunch of potted plants outside her store on N. Fullerton Ave., and she liked to think of it as a little piazza where senior citizens or young mothers could sit and take a rest in the afternoon.

Now all that remains are four potted plots. The bench and the bistro table were taken in previous years. One potted plant was taken two weeks ago, and three more were missing when she arrived at her shop on Tuesday morning. Althogther, that’s about $600 worth of landscaping.

The Montclair Times has gotten confirmation from the state that the NJ Department of Community Affairs will investigate charges by former Montclair construction official Robert McLoughlin that Mayor Jerry Fried tried to exert political pressure on him in his inspection job.

McLoughlin said that Fried tried to influence his decisions on the Wellmont after a piece of the ceiling fell on spectators during a concert. The Wellmont was cleared for a big concert by Lyle Lovett about a week later. Continue Reading

A reader found this female cat on May 25 on Clinton Avenue, near the intersection of Myrtle Avenue. The cat is small, with black, gray, and brown stripes. It appears that it may have recently had surgery, as her hair is shaved on one of her front legs. She has a very friendly disposition.

Rich Murnick: I Feel Bad for Mayor Fried

BY  |  Thursday, May 26, 2011 9:15am  |  COMMENTS (9)

I feel bad for Mayor Fried, he still hasn’t grasped the form of government we have here in Montclair. But to flat out disrespect your elected peers is just wrong and embarrassing for him.

We are all here working for the people that elected us, we don’t work for him. A majority of council is demanding answers regarding finances, we owe it to our constiuents.

When we, the council as a whole, feel the budget is done, we will vote on it, not a minute or “dollar” sooner.

Tapastry: Bringing Tapas to Montclair

Although the newly-opened Honest Dog Restaurant was deserted last night, having closed suddenly on Tuesday only a few weeks after it opened, 12 Church Street was far from forlorn. Upstairs, amidst the food and music of their weekly Studio 12 open mic night, Montclair restaurant veterans Greg and Cheryl Spinelli were busy planning a new venture. Come Friday, the downstairs restaurant space will open as Tapastry, where, together with Chef Gonzalo Fernandez (formerly of La Xunta Tapas Bar in NY’s East Village), they’ll be bringing Tapas to Montclair. Missing Cat in Montclair

BY  |  Wednesday, May 25, 2011 5:05pm  |  COMMENTS (1)

A reader writes:

This cat, that was posted recently as missing, is my cat, Strixidae. I got him home and he escaped again. He is an old cat and I think he gets confused and winds up on other people’s back porches. When people find him they think he is homeless, because he’s really skinny, but otherwise healthy. He’s been missing a couple days and my guess (and hope) is that someone took him in thinking he is a stray or turned him in to a shelter. Please let me know if you have seen him around Chestnut Street/Valley Road/North Mountain/or the Van Vleck area.

If you have seen Strixidae, please contact pets@baristanet.com.

Montclair Crime: Boiler Burglary, Garden Furniture Theft

Wednesday, May 25, 2011 4:37pm  |  COMMENTS (2)

This week in Montclair crime included shoplifting, table and chairs stolen from the Pat Gail Gallery and a burglary at a multi-family home where a boiler was removed. From Lt. Scott Buehler:

On 5/24/11 at approximately 6:45 AM, police responded to a multi-family residence on Washington Street on a report of a burglary in progress. Upon arrival, police checked the interior of the residence but did not locate any possible suspects. While searching the residence, police learned that a heating boiler had been stolen from the residence. It appeared that extensive damage had been done to the home’s heating system, with holes punched in the wall and ceiling to access the plumbing located inside the walls.

Police then spoke to the caller, who stated that he observed two males removing the boiler from the residence while another male stood in the backyard. The boiler was removed using a hand truck and loaded it into a white pickup truck. The three suspects then entered the truck and fled the scene westbound on Washington Street.

The first suspect is described as a black male in his mid-thirties, 5’9”-5’11”, approximately 200 lbs. and last seen wearing a black tee shirt and black pants. The second suspect is described as a black male, approximately 6’0”, weighing 160-170 lbs., and last seen wearing a black tee shirt. The witness stated that these two males were the ones who removed the boiler from the residence. The third male is described as an older black male, approximately 5’7”, 130 lbs., and last seen wearing a black baseball cap, a blue button-down shirt, and dark-colored pants. The witness stated that this male acted as a lookout and drove the vehicle from the scene. Continue Reading

American Idol Finale: Lauren or Scotty?

BY  |  Wednesday, May 25, 2011 3:54pm  |  COMMENTS (5)

Who will win American (Teen) Idol? Who are you rooting for? And how weird was this long strange season of American Idol for you? There seemed to be lots of drama — from the early elimination of Pia Toscano, the surprising save of Casey Abrams early on, the staying power of Stefano or the late exit of James Durbin. There was also the rise from the bottom to the top three for Haley Reinhart (her take on Led Zeppelin’s “What Is and Should Never Be” was awesome (and a break from all the country) even with a spill. Last night, radio shows and websites were buzzing with more drama — reports that Haley might get called back because Lauren Alaina blew out a vocal chord. If you watched last night, you saw Alaina recovered nicely from almost losing her voice last night (we hear she lost some 20 pounds, too, during her Idol journey).

What did you like/ not like about this season (providing you watched of course — it was family time at our house). And who is really in it to win it?

I was very glad to see this post. The running in the street around here drives me crazy, mostly because the the majority of the runners I've encountered (not every runner)seem to think that it's their right to take up half the street when what they are doing is in fact illegal. And let's not be silly. Yes, concrete is hard on the joints, but the pavement isn't that much better. It's not like the roads are made of track rubber.
