“Are you ready kids?”
“Aye, aye captain!”
“I can’t hear you.”
“AYE, AYE CAPTAIN!!”
Arghhhh… Sea-woman First Class Korus reporting for duty Admirals, Commodores, Captains and angry freaks.

I have been busy cleaning the poop deck, and from the looks of the comments lately, there is a quite a bit of poop!

So I’m back up from the galley with a crisp, refreshing, sassy  Iris inspired cocktail, made with some fun liquids you may have seen, but not been certain what to do with. Continue Reading

The Colors Over Baristaville

After Monday’s armageddon-like storm, Montclair photographer Michael Greene caught this hopeful sign, stretching over downtown Baristaville. The photo was taken from the corner of Gates and Union Avenues, looking North towards Lackawanna Plaza with a Panasonic Lumix GF1, 18mm lens, in 5 individual vertical images stitched together in Photoshop.

Anyone find the pot of gold?

Looks like we’re in for more sunshine for the rest of the week, with the exception of Saturday.

You can see more of Greene’s work here.

The New Age of South Orange Government

BY  |  Wednesday, May 25, 2011 12:00pm  |  COMMENTS (10)

Alex Torpey, newly-elected South Orange Village President, has already helped the police department fight flash mobs through the monitoring of Twitter feed, and initiating proactive Tweets. Is he a social media savvy Village President President super hero? It still remains to be seen, as he has only just taken office, but he’s off to a good start with posting his Trustee meeting overview on YouTube.

What if the mayors of other Baristaville towns, let’s say Montclair and Bloomfield, did this as well? Would you watch them? Are they photogenic enough to join the ranks of elected official talking heads?

Fierce Words, Confusion and Disorder, but Still No Budget for Montclair

BY  |  Wednesday, May 25, 2011 10:41am  |  COMMENTS (21)

Last night’s Montclair Township Council meeting devolved into confusion and disorder, as well as ferocity directed at the mayor by Councilor Baskerville, who tired of Fried’s continual interruptions. After the mayor cut off discussions and concerns by council members Murnick and Africk, Baskerville met Fried’s attempt to quiet her input as well with fierce resistance.

“I have a right to finish!” she told him. “You can bang the gavel all you want, I have a right to finish my sentence! You did it to Rich, you did it to Cary, but you’re not going to do it to me. If we keep this up, we’re never going to get anywhere!” At that, the residents in the gallery applauded.

In the end, the council adjourned once again without passing a municipal budget. Continue Reading

Essex County Veterans Memorial Park, Newark

Today at noon, May 25, Essex County Executive Joseph N. DiVincenzo, Jr. will host a wreath laying ceremony in Essex County Veterans Memorial Park to commemorate Memorial Day. The event was held today to accommodate the schedules of area veterans groups, who have local ceremonies on Monday.

The 2.7-acre park and the Essex County Armed Forces Memorial are dedicated to the men and women who served as members in the U.S. military. When it opened in September, 2009 on the site of an antiquated parking garage that opened in the 1960s and had become an community eyesore, Veterans Memorial Park was the first new county park developed in Newark in 80 years. Run, Montclair!

For the 29th consecutive year, runners and walkers will take to the streets and parks for the Annual Montclair 10K & 2M Run/Walk on Sunday June 5, starting at 8:30 a.m. for the 2 mile and at 9:30 for the 10K. Both events will begin and end at the Montclair Y, 25 Park Street.

Both courses are flat. The 10K (6.2 mi.) runs through Edgemont and Anderson Parks, with splits are at 1, 3, and 5 miles. There are 3 water stops. Compuscore will provide race results on their website.

According to the Y’s Carol Kearney, who co-directs the race along with Pat Brechka for the Montclair Recreation & Cultural Affairs department, the goal of the run is to promote good health and an active lifestyle. “It’s a great community event,” Kearney told Baristanet. “There’s a DJ party after the race, with refreshments and fun for the whole family.” Kearney says they’re expecting more than 1,000 participants for both races.

This year the event is specifically encouraging participation in the 2 mile walk from the Montclair public schools. The school with best turnout will receive a plaque and a $100 prize to the physical education department for the purchase of equipment.

For more information and to register online, click here. Registration forms can also be printed out here for race day registration. On-site registration will be accepted. For more information, call the Montclair YMCA, 973-744-3400.

Glad We Met: My Grocery Buddy

BY  |  Tuesday, May 24, 2011 2:30pm  |  COMMENTS (4)

Every two weeks I drive down Bloomfield’s Broad Street, turn down a side street, and pick up my grocery shopping buddy – Esther*, a wonderful woman in her 80s.  I’ve been picking her up for a year now, and neither one of us has ever missed a shopping trip.  I have found that I benefit as much from the trips as she does, and I feel ridiculous as she thanks me because I should be thanking her. “Station Baby” Rocks Baristaville

BY  |  Tuesday, May 24, 2011 1:00pm  |  COMMENTS (26)

The Great Notch Inn, a popular highway-stop music venue on Rt. 46 in Little Falls, was packed to its doors on March 12. The crowd had come to see a new college band from nearby William Paterson University, Station Baby. The band played into the wee hours, finishing their second set at 2 a.m., four hours after they began.

If you missed the show that’s been getting buzzed about in the local music circles, don’t worry. The four-piece rock band will be back at The Great Notch this Sunday, May 29, at 6 p.m. (must be 21 or older) and at venues in the Baristaville area all summer.

Largely a cover band (with a collection of new music in the works), Station Baby is a force to be reckoned with, with Meagan Mccarol on lead vocals, Eric Tapper on guitar, Josh November on bass, and Nick Potters on drums. Continue Reading

Bloomfield Budget Passes With No Additional Cuts

At last night’s Bloomfield Council conference meeting, Finance Director Robert Renna announced that the state had approved the revised 2011 Bloomfield Municipal Budget, which had been developed at the Bloomfield budget meeting on May 12th.

Renna said that the $260,000 shortfall in the previous version of the budget had been addressed through revenue and grants, so no new cuts to the budget had been needed. The Council voted to approve the amended budget, which can now be formally adopted at the next council meeting on June 8th. Continue Reading

Aggravated Assault
On 5/20/11 at approximately 2:10 AM, police were dispatched to the area of Bloomfield Avenue and Mission Street on a report of an assault called in by a Glen Ridge Police Officer. The GRPD officer stated that he observed a male lying in the middle of Bloomfield Avenue, with several males running east from the area across Mission Street.

Police spoke to the victim, a Montclair resident, who stated that he was assaulted by two Hispanic associates and two other males after he refused to give them any of his alcoholic beverages for free. After refusing their request, the victim stated that one of the males punched him. The victim suffered a gash to the head and an injury to his eye. The victim proceeded to call his friend, who was also attacked and suffered a contusion to his head. Both victims were transported to Mountainside Hospital for treatment.

A short time later, a twenty-six year old Bloomfield resident arrived at Mountainside Hospital. Police had located the possibly intoxicated male on Mission Street and he was identified as one of the males who had run from the scene initially. Shortly thereafter, Glen Ridge police located a twenty-six year old Montclair resident at the intersection of Ridgewood Avenue and Clark Street in Glen Ridge. The male, who had suffered a laceration under his left eye, was also identified as someone possibly involved in the earlier assault. This male stated that he had been struck with an unknown sharp object by one of the other males. A chisel was located by police at the incident scene. No charges have been filed as of yet pending further investigation.

Anyone with further information is asked to contact Detective Terence Turner at 973-509-4724. Continue Reading
