More Bad Driving, Baristaville

BY  |  Tuesday, Jun 28, 2011 10:00am  |  COMMENTS (0)

The Millburn police reported that a pedestrian was struck in the vicinity of 300 Millburn Avenue just before 9 a.m. today, by a vehicle that fled the scene. EMS are currently evaluating the victim for a leg injury.

Given this weekend’s fatalities and other evidence of recklessness and bad driving, today’s incident is like soured icing on a moldy cake.

Johari Lingerie Coming to Bloomfield Avenue

BY  |  Tuesday, Jun 28, 2011 9:01am  |  COMMENTS (0)

Excuse me for a moment, fellows. I need a word with the women of Baristaville. Ladies, I put my question to you bluntly — are you wearing the right bra?

Unless you’ve been properly measured by a professional, and taught how to put it on (it’s not just about fastening it, you know), chances are you’ve got the wrong size, cut and foundation for your own unique body. You’re probably also wearing it wrong. No matter how pretty the print, racy the cut or designer the label, if it doesn’t fit, it’s not doing you any favors. Let’s face it, one woman’s bra is another woman’s cleaning rag.

But fret not, Montclair’s undergarment Queen, Deborah Furr, of Johari can help, and come September, she’ll be in a bigger, better space, taking over Semplice’s rapidly emptying, high-profile square footage at 465 Bloomfield Avenue.

Furr, who has been in her current space on South Park Street for 11 years, has been searching for the right store for the past five. She is going from 575 square feet to 2,000, and actually looking at a decrease in the price, per sq. foot. “I’m saving around $14 per square foot. Rents have come down in Montclair,” she said. “Bloomfield Avenue is now cheaper than Park Street, with the exception of Grabowsky [Development]. He wants $35 a sq. ft. for the Bloomfield Avenue stores, and those are sitting empty.”

Johari’s expansion will feature more of all the popular lines that her customers have been requesting, but which Furr had no room to carry. “My current space has been too small for a long time,” she explained. Furr said they’d now have space to offer a really well-rounded selection of lingere, including plus sizes, and a new line of resort wear from designers like Tommy Bahama. They’ll have sleep wear, body shapers, hosiery, accessories, and all the things a woman needs to support and enhance her various body parts.

Regardless of what stage of life you’re at, whether you came of age in the 60′s and 70′s, where bras were burned rather than fitted, pregnant and preparing for breastfeeding, have a tween daughter who is just entering the mysterious world of womanhood, or anywhere in between or beyond, Furr and her staff will help you get it right… and come September, you’ll have even more of a choice.

Anthony Buccino: Biking on a Dead End Street

You wouldn’t think that a kid could get into too much trouble riding his bike up and down a dead end street.

On both sides of that Gless Avenue in Belleville there were about a dozen two-family houses and not all of them had kids who rode their bikes in the street, on sidewalks that lifted near big trees, or up and down smooth and bumpy driveways.

In baseball season, we took the cards of players we didn’t know and used a few of mom’s clothespins to make our bikes sound like motorcycles. We always had to see who could put the most cards on the fender, how much noise you could make and how long they would stay on when you raced up and down those driveways.

Biking on the SOMA Greenway

BY  |  Monday, Jun 27, 2011 3:30pm  |  COMMENTS (0)

This past Saturday, cyclists from Maplewood and South Orange met for a group ride across a planned path that will one day connect the two towns.

The event was organized by the South Orange Maplewood Bicycle Coalition (SOMbike), which puts together frequent group rides and hopes to encourage safe street riding for SOMA families. This ride was focused on The Greenway, a proposed project that will create an uninterrupted bike and pedestrian path from Maplewood Middle School to South Orange Middle School (through Memorial Park and Cameron Field), hopefully by the end of the decade. Bad Driving, Baristaville

BY  |  Monday, Jun 27, 2011 2:24pm  |  COMMENTS (28)

There was a lot of bad driving in the greater Baristaville area this past weekend — though we all know that’s kind of status quo. It was worse than usual, however, with two tragic incidents resulting in pedestrian fatalities in Newark on Saturday.

According to Acting Essex County Prosecutor Carolyn A. Murray, at approximately 3:22 a.m., on June 25, Danny Bynum, 43, of Newark was struck and killed in the vicinity of Madison and South 16th Street by a black Mazda traveling at a high rate of speed. Towanna Glanton, 18, of Newark has been charged with vehicular homicide in connection with Bynum’s death. She was coming from a nightclub at the time of the collision, and was also charged with driving while intoxicated.

Later that same day Malik Mohammad, 49, of Irvington was also struck and killed. That incident occurred in the vicinity of South Orange Avenue and South 11th Street in Newark. The preliminary investigation indicates the vehicle that struck Mr. Mohammad was a stolen pick up truck. No arrests have been made in that case.

But dangerous drivers aren’t only found in our county’s urban locations. Continue Reading

Asteroid Fly By Today

BY  |  Monday, Jun 27, 2011 12:58pm  |  COMMENTS (2)

It’ll be a near miss, but NASA scientists say there is no risk of impact when the cosmic rock called Asteroid 2011 MD zips by 7,500 miles above our planet at around 1:00 p.m. today, June 27.

According to NASA, the asteroid is estimated to be between 29 and 98 feet wide, and is thought to be too small to survive a trip into our atmosphere; it would break and burn before crashing into the earth’s surface. It will come close, though, passing just off the coast of Antarctica, well below geosynchronous satellites, though above the International Space Station.

The diagram above gives a view of the asteroid’s trajectory from the general direction of the Sun. On its web site, NASA says that “one would expect an object of this size to come this close to Earth about every 6 years on average. For a brief time, it may be bright enough to be seen even with a modest-sized telescope.”

Can you feel the breeze of it going by?

Yesterday, 39 archers and their fans took to the archery field in Brookdale Park for the Garden State Games, sponsored by the New Jersey Archery Association and hosted by the Bloomfield Archers. Participants ranged from beginners to world-class archers, including 15-year-old bowman Jared Goodlow of Montclair, who just started archery about three months ago, and Mike Usherenko of Oakland, N.J., who will be leaving for Turin on Wednesday to coach the Americans competing in the World Archery Championships, which will allocate 35 spaces for next summer’s Olympics. The US team was finalized in a competition at the Brookdale archery field in May.

I was very glad to see this post. The running in the street around here drives me crazy, mostly because the the majority of the runners I've encountered (not every runner)seem to think that it's their right to take up half the street when what they are doing is in fact illegal. And let's not be silly. Yes, concrete is hard on the joints, but the pavement isn't that much better. It's not like the roads are made of track rubber.
