Rental Apartment Living in Downtown Glen Ridge

BY  |  Monday, Jun 27, 2011 9:16am  |  COMMENTS (0)

If these two new rental apartments were in Montclair, Bloomfield or any other Baristaville municipality, they wouldn’t really be newsworthy, but the fact that they’re coming to “downtown” Glen Ridge is worth a mention. While hardly a bustling “bright lights” setting, the units bring rental possibility to the central commercial location for the first time since 1999. From here, you can easily get just about anywhere in the world without a car, yet retain a small town Jersey lifestyle.

Just two blocks from the train station, one block from the bus, and literally in the back yard of the town’s shops, nightlife, pharmacy, yoga studio and auto mechanic extraordinaire , these two units are just coming on the market. One is ready for occupancy and the second will be available for August 1. Continue Reading

Joan Garry: OK New Jersey. Your Turn?

BY  |  Saturday, Jun 25, 2011 9:09am  |  COMMENTS (44)

As close as she thought she'd ever get to a wedding gown.

In May 2009, my partner Eileen and I, after 28 years of ‘shacking up,’ had a ‘civil union’ in Montclair. Before the private family ceremony in our living room, I went to the Montclair Municipal Building to pick up the certificate. A delightful woman named Anne with the loveliest Irish brogue came to the counter. I explained what I needed. She went over to a desk. On it sat two big binders. She brought one to the counter. She began to look, first under G for Garry and then under O for Opatut. She was puzzled. “ It doesn’t seem to be here ,”she told me. She double checked that she was looking in the “civil union” binder. She was. “Perhaps it’s in the marriage binder,” she said. Retrieving that binder, she quickly found our certificate. “It appears you were misfiled,” she said with that lilt that made me want to sip a draft ale. “It would not be the first time that it was just simply not clear what to do with me,” I said with not a scent of snark. She seemed to understand. “You know,” she said. “I really don’t understand why we just don’t have one binder.”

Montclair Gets New CFO

BY  |  Friday, Jun 24, 2011 7:14pm  |  COMMENTS (0)

There’s a new CFO in town — Frank V. Mason.

Mason takes over for Gordon Stelter, who resigned in February to take a CFO position in Rutherford.

Mason has over 10 years of experience in municipal finance, having served as certified municipal finance officer for the borough of Red Bank since 2006 and as treasurer for the township of North Bergen from 2000-2006.

Town manager Marc Dashield made the announcement today. “We’re very pleased to welcome Mr. Mason as head of our Finance Department,” says Dashield. “He brings invaluable experience in municipal finance and has a strong budgeting and accounting background in the non-profit and private sectors.”

Mason will assume the township CFO post in late July, after Council has voted on the resolution confirming his appointment at the July 12 Council meeting.

I was very glad to see this post. The running in the street around here drives me crazy, mostly because the the majority of the runners I've encountered (not every runner)seem to think that it's their right to take up half the street when what they are doing is in fact illegal. And let's not be silly. Yes, concrete is hard on the joints, but the pavement isn't that much better. It's not like the roads are made of track rubber.
