When they introduced their line of vegan ice cream in April, Montclair’s eco-friendly store “Go Lightly” seemed to make lots of folks very happy. Our post got recommended by more than 100 people and one reader said “awesome, awesome, awesome.”
Last week, the shop’s owner, Montclair native Jennifer Chaky, got a big media shout out for her vegan treat when the roving Munchmobile sampled their wares during the annual “all-healthy-food trip.”
One of five stops on the tour, the Munchers favored the dark chocolate and peanut butter fudge flavors, but weren’t so keen on the strawberry balsamic. In his article, the Star Ledger’s Munchmobile writer Peter Genovese admitted developing a potential dependence on the confection, which is made by Maze’s Creamery in Staten Island, NY.
He said:
Let’s be honest; when most people hear the word “vegan,” they think bland and tasteless. But the vegan ice cream at Go Lightly in Montclair turned out to be tasty and near-addictive. It was also a bit ice-crystally; we’ll blame it on being in the freezer too long.

In other Montclair food news, Michael Carrino, Chef/Owner has closed Passionne after five years on Walnut Street. Carrino, who may announce some news in the coming weeks about future plans, sent an email to patrons on his email list alerting them to the restaurant closing on July 19 and told them to watch his website for word on a new location.

It surely has to be the most excruciatingly slooooowww news day for the Barisats to suddenly cite a Star-Ledger story which, after all, ran last Friday.
Maple Walnut is def my fav also!( & choc. chip cookie % red velvet & dark choc, etc!) so glad to have Vegan Ice Cream in Montclair. Thanks Go Lightly!
How do you get away with the “slow news day” refrain, cathar? The prohibition is explicitly written in the posting guidelines. You must have the goods on somebody.
oh cathar is back ! yeah ! my arrogant dullard self is overcome with joy !
Johnlee, even as you shower yourself with such a (hard-earned, I’m sure)sobriquet, I can only stand back and applaud your forthright honesty.
Walleroo, I simply call ‘em as they appear to be. Perhaps the Baristas, by allowing me to slip this in every now and then, hope to arouse a groundswell of objections to goose those posting figures. (Or as much of a “groundswell” as dear johnlee is ale to muster up.)
But do you really believe, walleroo, that a day when an item like this runs is one filled with hard, compelling, have-to-read-it news?
