Affordable Senior Housing Project Moves Forward in Bloomfield

BY  |  Tuesday, Jul 26, 2011 10:30am  |  COMMENTS (0)

The Bloomfield Council paved the way to move forward with the proposed senior citizens affordable housing project that would be built next to the Post Office, passing several ordinances and a resolution pertaining to the project at last night’s conference meeting.

The ordinances included the passage of a tax exemption for the project (Heritage Village at Bloomfield Urban Renewal, LLC), an ordinance amending the Bloomfield Center Redevelopment Plan Phase II, and a resolution remanding the project’s site plan approval to the Planning Board. These steps had to be taken before the township could complete its application for a tax credit program administered by the state Housing and Mortgage Financing Agency (HMFA), which the Council had agreed to apply for at the previous council meeting. The application is to be submitted by September 2. Continue Reading

Rush Hour Road Slick

A quick response by the Montclair Fire Department enabled traffic to continue flowing safely after a landscape truck’s oil tank sprung a leak while crossing the intersection of Elm/Grove Streets and Bloomfield Avenue just after 8 a.m. this morning. An employee of the landscape company, who asked not to be named or photographed, said the truck had just been repaired the day before, and cost $1,000. He showed me the receipt.

Fortunately, no one was injured, nor overly inconvenienced by the vehicular mishap, but the incident is a reminder that a good mechanic is hard to find.

I’ll take this moment to give a shout out to my trusty mechanics, the Kindburg brothers at Glen Ridge Auto, who have bailed me out of some tight spots, and read me the last rights of a few cars in the 20 years I’ve frequented them.

Who do you use to make sure your autos keep running safely? Let’s hear your favorite car maintenance story?

Peter King Loves Montclair’s Osteria Giotto

BY  |  Monday, Jul 25, 2011 5:17pm  |  COMMENTS (10)

Osteria Giotto comes in at No. 6 on a top 10 of vacation highlights of Sports Illustrated senior writer Peter King.

Says King…”And the best meal of a vacation that took us to Trieste, Vienna, New York, Chicago and Minneapolis came in … Montclair, N.J. I’ve blown smoke at Osteria Giotto on Midland Avenue in Montclair a few times, like the time I took Brandon Jacobs of the Giants there two nights before the Giants and Pack played in the NFC Championship Game — and Jacobs loved the lasagna so much he had to get two pieces to go for a late-night snack. It was great to see old friends and to have my annual piece of said lasagna (it’s perfect — not overwhelmingly heavy, but with some different spices, like nutmeg) and the mista salad.”

You won’t find the lasagna ($19.50) on the dinner menu, but it’s always a featured special. Here’s what made King and Jacobs swoon — nine layers of homemade pasta, along with Bolognese and Bechamel sauces, and Parmesan cheese.

What Will You Do, Now That You’re Cool?

If you listen closely to the breeze in the video, you might also hear the collective sighing of Baristaville residents, who were released today from the record-breaking heat that had us all under siege (and sometimes in the dark) for the past several weeks.

Shot a little after 1 p.m., before the rain started to fall, the rustling of leaves was like a siren’s call, heard from my home office window — wide open for the first time in days. I had to take a garden walk, and doing so without breaking into a drenching sweat gave me a good attitude adjustment. I became cool again — as in calm and collect. Continue Reading

When is it Okay to be Selfish?

You need to share that toy.

You should really do “x” for “y”.

Can’t you just do for me?

Have you ever just wanted to say ‘no’ – I can’t? We live in a society where we are brought up from an early age to give and do for others (and I’m not belittling what a great trait that is to have). However at times, we need to think about ourselves. What is best for us in a given situation. What will keep our anxiety level from hitting new heights. I have always tried to do as much as possible for others (and I hope my friends reading this are not thinking they can no longer come to me with things – because that doesn’t change). It is just that there are times when we cannot take on every project or allow that ‘To Do’ list to become so unmanageable that things begin to suffer. It may upset someone else to hear you say “I really can’t do that now” – but in the end, your blood pressure may thank you for saying those words. Continue Reading

I was very glad to see this post. The running in the street around here drives me crazy, mostly because the the majority of the runners I've encountered (not every runner)seem to think that it's their right to take up half the street when what they are doing is in fact illegal. And let's not be silly. Yes, concrete is hard on the joints, but the pavement isn't that much better. It's not like the roads are made of track rubber.
