Update: As of 10 p.m., PSE&G reports in a heat wave update that about 15,000 customers statewide who are without power due to the weather, but says most customers in our area have had power restored:
About 14,000 outages are heat related and scattered throughout our service territory. PSE&G has restored power to about 8,000 customers in portions of Bloomfield, Glen Ridge, Montclair and Newark whose service was interrupted earlier this evening to protect the power grid.
You can reach PSE&G at 1-800-436-7734.
Power outages in Bloomfield, Glen Ridge, South end Montclair and parts of North Newark. Essex County Sherriff’s office was called in to assist with traffic control, according to Breaking News Network. Some traffic light running on generator power.
Tips are coming in that there’s a power outage in parts of the south end of Glen Ridge.
One resident wrote “GRPD came by an hour ago to ask if we had power. We did. Apparently some on Maolis and Linden were without. Now the part of Maolis that did, doesn’t.”
Others, in the area around Carteret Park have been posting on Facebook that they’re out “again.”
On Willow Street, there was a brief interruption in power, but it rebooted within a split second. It lasted just long enough for residents to shout “oh no.”
Anyone else out there sitting in a hot box due to the outage?

My powered flickered off and then on immediately in Montclair (07043). But it still was long enough for me to almost have a heart attack.
Georgette, I had the same flicker and I completely panicked.
Yes, I was typing away, and the computer went off. I got up and went to tell my son that the power was out, and noticed that the lights were on. Fortunately, I hit “save” after just bout every word, so I’m cool.
But it doesn’t bode well for tonight… sorry, ‘gette, I don’t want to get you worried.
I’m on the South Side of GR on Ridgewood and our power flicker, I have my fingers crossed.
It’s a horrible notion, isn’t it, to be thrust back into a state of nature, without a/c.
Crossing my fingers didn’t work, I dont have power and my sister in town also does not. This is gonna be a fun night.
We had the ‘flicker’ in ‘Watsessing Heights’. About 30 minutes later the power went out completely, then it just came back on. I didn’t panick but I did try to log on to someone else’s router – didn’t work. Normally, I can ‘see’ about 15 home networks within range of my laptop, but when we lost power, all I could see was one. That’s when I knew it was more than just a few houses.
Stay calm everyone, we still have about 36 – 48 more hours of extreme heat to endure.
Power went out about 7:10 pm, but has been back on since about 8 pm on Ridgewood/Appelton.
Don’t know it these are planned “rolling” blackouts since it lasted about an hour, or if these are real outages. If they are “rolling” .. PSEG should let us know.
Let’s all continue to pray the grid “holds” and the Hackers don’t pull a repeat of 2003′s Black Out. http://www.scientificamerican.com/blog/post.cfm?id=expert-a-virus-caused-the-blackout-2011-07-20
We lost power for about an hour on eastern Carteret. But MuzzyNJ’s neighborhood is still out. Those poor people — this is the third time this week, and it has been hours.
We’ve been without power on Williamson Ave in Bloomfield for an hour now. No sign of PSE&G and we are starting to melt.
Our power in the North end of GR went out so we got in the car and went to Whole Foods in WO for gelato. The light at Eagle Rock & Prospect was out and people were bailing out of Whole Foods so we went on further to Mark & Julie’s and….They had power! Good ice cream.
We don’t have a/c, just kick on the attic fan and a few room fans and vi-ola!
Power is still out on Lorraine in GR – it went out at 6pm exactly, and it’s been out ever since – Kit this is the 4th time in 4 days for us (2.5 hours on Tuesday, two 1-hour blackouts yesterday, and 5.25 hours and counting now.
People were understandably angry with PSE&G at our bi-weekly block party, but we partied on anyway.
Sometimes those PSE&G guys who come around to the house can tell you all sorts of interesting things about why such things happen, if you can get them talking… There’s got to be some local deficiency in equipment that PSE&G just hasn’t upgraded.
Sadly, Walleroo, I haven’t seen anyone from PSE&G all day…
2am: Maolis, Hawthorne, Linden block still out. PSEG hotline puts u on hold for a current wait time of 30 mins. No longer will give estimate for service restoration.
In case anyone’s keeping track: We lost power in Montclair near Brookdale Park at about 23:33 July 22 and it came up a few hours later, at 02:52 July 23.
It was unusual as both sides of our street appeared to be out. The power outage that hits both sides is pretty rare.
As for Lorraine: Wasn’t that where a transformer had to be replaced? They did that a number of years ago behind our home, and it takes a little time.
…Andrew
The Lorraine Street (GR) power came back on at exactly 5am. Andrew, I think that was on Lorraine Ave in Montclair (which is far away from us, as many an unhappy delivery person would tell you).
Andrew, it seems we lurk in the same fields. Our power went out at 11:30, just after the GREAT doc LEnnon NYC on PBS, right before Charlie Rose came on (sorry to those who think I only watch Fox).
I went outside and it was SO DARK and strange. And then I walked back into my non-air conditioned house…. Thankfully, some rooms were cool, but that changed quickly.
Sweet Lord is air conditioning nice. We had the help fans us until we went to sleep.
Power has been out in Upper Montclair in a few houses since 6pm last night. First message promised restoration by 2am. Did not happen. No one has come and you can no longer get through to PSEG–even on the life threatening emergency line.
if the power is out does that mean that those new fancy schmancy parking kiosks in Upper Montclair are also not working? I wonder if ticket will still be issued (dumb question I know, because we know the answer will be yes)
Power out here around 2 a.m. when I heard the carbon monoxide detector screech. Pine Street/Bloomfield Avenue/Glenridge Avenue area. Forced myself back to sleep it what was a comfortable house at the time, and heard power cycle on at whatever time it was, since there were no clocks. We have so many power outages in this area, even when weather is temperate and clear. Just business as usual with PSE&G. Kissed my Kuerig coffee maker when it didn’t get fried again after the last outage, programmed it and had a cuppa. Now I’m worry free.
Carl….Get out and go to the mall and hang out at B & N or go to the town pool if they don’t CLOSE like they did yesterday! I’m sure there will be more blackouts today.
Power still out in Upper Montclair since 6pm last night.
Redmom — do you know which streets affected?
Power is back on Wildwood Ave. It went out sometime last night around midnight, and I just got back home to happily found it has been restored.
I don’t think it’s out in Liz’s house. There’s been a wild party going on up there all night, and it’s still raging. Screaming, sounds of broken glass, maniacal laughter…
PSEG is horrible. 3 times this week that the North side of Carteret Street in Glen Ridge was out of power. They said we would be back on by midnight did not come back on until 5 AM. Our neighbors across the street had theirs back on by 8 PM. Why do we always get restored last! What happened between those 7 hours that they couldn’t get it done faster!
They need to do something about this. We were out in the middle of the winter for 3 days in a row and now 3 times in 4 days.
My advice, ahbaggins, for what it’s worth, is to wait for the off season, when there’s no emergency going on, and find out from one of the PSE&G guys what the deficiency is. Then try and get it fixed–go to a councilor or congressman and lobby for it. Right now they’re all in crisis mode.
PAZ,
When we were out for 3+ days in Spring, 2010, I broke down and bought a generator, so it’s not too bad, just an annoyance. It’s still complete BS that these outages happen with such frequency – completely inexcusable.
Lost power in the Bloomfield College area for about an hour so not too bad but it was amazing how hot my apartment got in that one hour.
That’s good advice Walleroo, the problem is that they have all the leverage (the “regulators” are mostly their pals) and they know it. That, plus once the power comes back on, folks are no longer angry enough to carve out the time for letters and meetings and such. But they’ve pushed it pretty far this time – and if it goes out again tonight, I might just be heading down to the hardware store for a nice new pitchfork…
We’re on Lorraine Ave in Upper Montclair–power blinked around a lot last night, but then stayed on, but the cell phone service (AT&T) has gone from the usual barely ok to non-existent or one bar and not connecting calls–has anyone else in the area had similar cell problems? (we’re between Valley & Norwood.)
You can work within the political process, Carl, as I’m advocating, or you can rile up the mob and have a violent revolution, as you’re contemplating. Whatever floats your boat, dude. To each his own. All roads meet in Mecca. Peace out!
Hmm. That’s my barrio. Triangulating from the reports, sounds like we like we lost power. This is the first heat related outage that I remember in 20+ years.
Just a little joke, Walleroo (you usually get my jokes, perhaps you need a nap – I’m guessing you didn’t get much sleep with all that partying above your porch).
Although one could argue that both options are “working within the political process”, especially in a country founded with a revolution and bound together by a bloody civil war – I’m actually something of a pacifist, so it’s letters and meetings and such for me.
But there is something very attractive about a shiny new pitchfork…
[That last part is another (feeble, perhaps) attempt at humor]
John, the parking kiosk system is a cynical canard designed to keep people from patronizing local businesses, just like the perpetually “broken” meters. I like Starbucks as much as the next guy, well maybe not as much as some of the Birkenstock/laptop (“I’m actually working here”) crowd, but not enough to get a ticket. Appologies to Strunck & White for the above punctuation.
Speaking of letters & such:
http://www.nj.gov/bpu/assistance/complaints/
The correct number for PSE&G is 1-800-436-7734. Although calling the right number probably won’t help much more than calling the wrong number.
Still no power on Williamson Ave in Bloomfield. We were told that it could be another 36 hours before power is restored.
I’ll see your joke, and raise you two.
Are you upset, deadeye, because someone this morning had taken your parking space directly in front of Starbucks on Valley, where the yellow line is (you know, the line that means “No Parking Except for Deadeye”)? Was someone in Birkenstocks sitting in one of the comfy leather chairs?
Power on the section of Highland Ave in Upper Montclair around Mountain restored to about 25 homes at 10:45 this morning (out just after 6pm last night). Long, hot time of it and happy to have it back.
The quote from PSE&G says they restored power to customers “whose service was interrupted earlier this evening to protect the power grid.”
It sounds like the power was cut to lower demand, like a rolling blackout, rather than equipment failure.
That might explain why the power has gone off at about the same time every evening (at least at the south end of Glen Ridge).
Walleroo….More likely it was taken by a Pharma rep. or one of the Prof’s neighbors.
Karin,
Also exactly at the top of the hour:
7/19 7:00pm
7/21 8:00pm
7/22 6:00pm
Part of our block near Watchung and Valley was out last night for (only) four hours. But this was due to a bad transformer near Burnside. Happens throughout the year. Tech just uses a long insulated pole to reset the breaker on the unit. We have asked PSEG to replace the unit, to no avail. But four hours is ok compared to what others nearby have endured. Argh.
No Roo, I’m not upset. I’m in London partying with Amy Winehouse.
It seems that when PSE&G finally appears to fix the problem, it takes minutes. Circuit Breaker? Fuse?
Just resetting a breaker isn’t a solution if this continually needs to happen. It means that the network is too sparse.
“It sounds like the power was cut to lower demand, like a rolling blackout, rather than equipment failure.”
It certainly does. When they shut us down to replace the transformer in our yard a few years back, they gave us warning. It made a difference. If they’re using rolling blackouts, a warning would be nice.
…Andrew
A warning would be nice. And if they’re going to treat our neighborhood like second-class citizens perhaps we could get a break on our bill? But, really, I’d rather they fix the problem. No power again last night from 6 pm to 5 am.
in 2000, SDG&E was forced to roll blackouts during the whole Enron debacle, there were no warnings of the rolling blackouts until one of them affected traffic lights at a major intersection, causing all traffic lights to go out, resulting in serious injuries. Let’s hope it doesn’t come to that here.
Tonight was Broad Street’s turn — between GR Pkwy and Bay. for about 1/2 hour. Cops were pretty quick to the scene at Bay to direct traffic..
The area around Brookdale Park was hit again this evening. We were on the road heading back when we got the call, and we noticed a number of dark blocks as we approached along Grove.
This was much quicker, though, than last night. So far, anyway.
…Andrew
The good people at Sandwich Theory have a dog bowl of water out front for passing dogs, and I guess any other bits of Creation who decide to pass by can take a slurp too.
(bunnies were moseying on up to the overturned frisbees of filled with water in my garden this morning)
Carl,
Let me know when you want to go torches and pitchforks – I was ready at 3am on Sat morning.
made it through the night with the power on. hoping for two in a row, but not counting on it.
