UPDATE: Gov. Christie’s ready. He’s already declared a state of emergency, allowing him to bring in the National Guard.
If you enjoy Mother Nature’s moods, this week’s events continue to be interesting here in Baristaville, and along the East Coast. First we got rocked by Tuesday’s earthquake, and now we appear to be in the path of Hurricane Irene.
While the unusually large Category 3 storm’s 125 mph winds are currently pounding the Bahamas, Irene is expected to hit the North Carolina coast on Saturday, and is projected to arrive in the Northeast on Sunday. New Jersey, Long Island and Connecticut are all possible landfall locations, though the force will have weakened considerably by then.
Local municipalities are making preparations throughout the tri-state area. According to the Huffington Post, New York City officials are developing evacuation plans for residents from low-lying areas of the city. Since areas within the subway system are likely to flood, there is a plan to shut the system down ahead of time to reduce damage to the infrastructure.
Want to keep an eye on the storm? Here’s a link to the National Weather Service’s Hurricane Center site. Since we still have a few days to ponder Irene, before her arrival, take our poll and let us know where you stand on the impending emergengy.

We’re currently in the bull’s eye. I think it’s a pretty serious situation.
Yes, but Monday is supposed to be gorgeous! Think any of us will live to enjoy it?
Generator is gassed and ready to go. Extra fuel in shed. Got a week’s worth of food. Candles flashlights. Took stuff up out of basement. Yes, it looks very serious indeed. Get your food now before the crowds later.
You need to add “trip to Bottle King”
Were currently at the shore, seems to be pretty serious, the town is removing everything from the beach. Its going to hit us hard. (Surfing waves are awesome though!) Hopefuaily we can get back to Montclair.
Gonna try to cut down some tree branches. PSE&G where are you?!?!?
It’s Bush’s fault. Obviously spawned by global warming….Seriously though, this looks ominous. We’ve been spared for quite a while now. I hope any damage is minimal. 70 mph winds and big trees don’t mix well. We’ll be far north, in any case.
I’m not worried about it, deadeye. Montclair has hired Mr. Brown, formerly of FEMA, to coordinate preparation and recovery plans.
Try to cut any branches that might rub against siding and/or edge of roof shingles. With 70+ mph winds these branches could rip off edge shingles. Best bet now is to get a pole trimmer or hope a tree service can do it asap.
Since we’re talking about a hurricane, and we’ve just been through a fairly hot summer, can we remove the posts about slippery roads and “where are the snowplows?” under “See-Click-Fix”? I have a feeling the snow is gone now.
