Gov. Declares State of Emergency Ahead of Hurricane Irene

UPDATE: A mandatory evacuation of Long Beach Island has been ordered for Friday at 8 a.m.

The storm is still days away from Baristaville, but the Governor isn’t wasting any time preparing. According to Acting Captain Frank Davis of the NJ State Police Office of Public Information, the rumors that Christie has already issued a mandatory evacuation for Jersey Shore towns by Friday afternoon are unfounded.

“There is no mandatory evacuation at this time,” he told Baristanet. But, the Governor is suggesting that people clear out of shore towns by tomorrow afternoon. It’s an advisory due to the pending storm, but by no means an evacuation and definitely not mandatory at this point.”

That said, Captain Davis did say that Christie would evacuate if it becomes necessary. “The governor declared a State of Emergency, so that he can deploy the National Guard to assist with evacuations should he decide to do that.”

Were you planning to head DTS for the weekend? Will you change your plans?

“THE LATEST NUMERICAL GUIDANCE CONTINUES TO ADJUST WESTWARD AS HAS THE LAST SEVERAL NHC TRACK FORECASTS WHICH NOW HAVE EYE OF IRENE COMING THRU THE NORTH CAROLINA OUTER BANKS LATE SATURDAY BEFORE GRAZING THE DELMARVA AND NEW JERSEY THEN MOVING INTO THE NORTHEAST ON SUNDAY. THIS POTENTIALLY COULD BE EXTREMELY DESTRUCTIVE WITH MASSIVE DISRUPTIONS TO SOCIETY AND COMMERCE ALONG ITS ENTIRE TRACK WITH VERY HIGH WINDS/STORM SURGE/OCEAN OVERWASH/BEACH EROSION/SOUND AND BAY SIDE COASTAL FLOODING AND EXTREME TIDE POTENTIAL. WIDESPREAD HEAVY RAINS IN THE 6-10 INCH RANGE WILL BE COMMON WITH GREATLY INCREASED INLAND FLOOD POTENTIAL.”

I could think of something else this sounds like, but I won’t mention it.

Hurricane Irene could be ‘most devastating storm to ever hit’ N.J., climatologist says

Long Beach Island will be under a mandatory evacuation order at 8 a.m. Friday, municipal and Ocean County emergency officials said this afternoon.

This is shaping up to be the real deal, folks. We’re all about to witness a life-altering historical event of terrible proportions. We here in Baristaville will not escape unscathed. Begin making your preparations NOW! Click here for the NJ Office of Emergency Management website to find out what you need to do

This could be our Katrina. I hope that I’m wrong.

Thanks for the link to the OEM Pork.

I hope you are wrong too.

But, unlike the gubmint ( including the Tea folks) , this hurricane will create jobs.

So, ROC, in the spirit of tackling the deficit and shrinking government spending, should we implore Chris Christie to refrain from seeking federal disaster relief on Monday?

This could be the biggest authentically local story ever and Baristanet is slow off the mark.

ROC reminds me of my 84 year old mother at times. Only sees the problems, not the solutions, and is in a constantly on the verge of a panic attack.

oops. “and is constantly on the verge”

JG, in ROC’s defense, I’d say that I’m not sure he’s afraid of the hurricane. Silent Herb, the same.

Rather, I think they’re afraid that the potential devastation could sadly prove that Tea Party fantasies are little more than fantasies, and that we need the federal government to spend a lot of money, and spend it quickly and properly, really soon, so as to effectively dispense aid in the aftermath of perilous events.

Spiro T. and jerseygurl, you’re posting to such little, and petty, effect today. Don’t you both have something better to do? Installing storm shutters, say? (Or planning a welcome party for Keller Williams Midtown Direct’s new real estate agent?)

And by my limited understanding of economics, Spiro (given that I struggled to get through “The Wealth Of Nations”)), merely that the federal government may well spend a lot of money post-hurricane on rebuilding efforts is no, uh, “refutation” of the Tea Party’s seeming pinch-pennyness. But then, it’s also questionable practice for the government to spend money it may not in fact even have. Though it’s curiously endearing that you seem to be looking forward to exactly that.

Disaster relief and life preservation are absolutely legitimate government functions. Let’s hope and pray none of us needs it.

We can only do so much! We shopped with the throngs of shoppers this noontime at W.O. Shop Rite, filled the wife’s Jeep with fuel, checked the sump pump in basement & it’s working, pulled down the storm windows, bought new batteries for battery operated radio & flashlights,Candles & moved 1 more car over to Car Condo in W.O. , just until this all passes, (she is there with 2 others of mine) and will be pulling the porch furniture into the basement. (What a schlep THAT is… OY VEY! SOooo, what else can one do? Sit ‘N worry, I guess!!
I hope we all remain safe, our homes & cars not be battered and that nobody gets injured, or ill. Best of luck to all of us.

I am more worried about the animal shelter in Bloomfield and the animals inside. I pray the animals stay safe. I wish I could be there to help them through it.

Oh look! Cathar is back. And, he has a “limited understanding of economics”.
Well, I’d offer that he has a “limited understanding” of just about anything.

But good to have him back on a SLD.

nd my limited understanding of the course of a normal day, croiagusanam, tells me that you really ought to have something better to do at 11:30 PM than to post here. Perhaps you have no avail of friends? And were out of Nyquil?

Up early, cathar? Good for you! Then again it is garbage day and mom does want those bins out.

You know, old boy, for those of us who aren’t at the Early Bird Special at the Ponderosa Steak House, 11:30 PM is really not that late at all.

Post-storm disaster relief is exactly what our government (i.e., the taxpayers) SHOULD be spending money on, should we need it (hope we do not, of course). Better that than a certain family’s 42 vacays, top-of-the-line liquor, and spa services.
