Hurricane Irene: How Bad Is Your Basement?

Our own Holly Korus measures six 16 inches of water in her basement courtesy of Hurricane Irene? How many inches have you got? The Montclair Fire Department is responding to numerous calls with requests for help pumping out flooded home basements with 4 feet or more of water.

The MFD will respond to help pump out basements with four (4) feet of water or more. Lower basement water levels, pools, and back yards are not a priority at this time.

Damp to an inch in spots. Two sump pumps and no power loss made the difference. But the sewer line was backing up into the basement laundry sink and almost—but not quite—topped the sink. It is all going down now. Hooray. Hope others fare well too.

Wow looking at that picture I am not grateful my finished basement isn’t THAT bad. Just about half an inch of water in laundry room and carpets in living room area are soaked.

Here in South Orange, our basement flooded but not too many inches of water. More of a mop up job than a shop vac job. We did not lose power on our street near SO Mid. School, and much to our surprise, very few branches down.

It is 16″ not 6″. We are hand drying xmas ornaments. All of my rubbermaid tubs and the shelves they were on all fell. We are grateful to be safe.

We had about 6″ too. At one point a few hours ago, I thought I’d be a good idea to knock the cap off the sewer line and let the water out that way. It wasn’t a good idea at all. I probably should have checked – like Galaxyman – my laundry sink first. Ewwwwwwww! Watching fountaining waste coming in to my basement in mute horror slowed my reaction speed a beat or two and then I managed to fish around for the cap and tap it back on. I think that qualifies for the ‘bone-headed move of the day’ award.

I would love to see Santorum get the nod. Maybe then the politically comatose members of society will wake up.
