Hurricane Irene Slams Montclair’s Inwood Terrace

Jill Nadison was in the kitchen of her home at 6 Inwood Terrace, with her neighbor Nancy, around 8 p.m. last night, when Nancy started screaming. Just a few feet away, in the family room, located at the rear of the house and where the Nadisons spend most of their time, a huge tree branch had come through the roof, decimating the room and leaving a monster tangle of branches in the backyard. The massive chunk of tree came from a neighboring backyard — from a tree residents of the street had been watching sway all day, wondering if it would come down. Part of it did and became a dangerous projectile, but fortunately Nadison and her family were unharmed. Continue Reading

Good morning! This is what we know so far about life in Baristaville post-Irene:

  • DeCamp buses are running. Or as Montclairion Thom Kennon put it on Twitter: “A little nervous clot of NJT rail commuters huddle awaiting the resentful vibes of the DeCamp bus riders, should they allow us aboard.”
  • Some people have their power back! We have some happy reports from a couple of tipsters that their power is back on. PSE&G says it restored service to 240,000 customers overnight. The bad news is that 265,000 power customers are still without. Despite the 5 to 7 day estimates everybody heard yesterday, PSE&G says the “majority” of customers without service will be restored within 48 hours.

A Moment of Grace

BY  |  Sunday, Aug 28, 2011 7:27pm  |  COMMENTS (0)

It’s not over, by a long shot. Winds are still gusting, thousands of Baristaville residents are without power, generators are roaring, basements are still deep in standing water, residents in Maplewood and Millburn don’t have drinking water after a NJAWC water main break and NJ Transit is going to try to get it together for a modified schedule tomorrow. But Carol Lintz of Montclair grabbed a few shots of a late-afternoon rainbow from her 7th floor Rockliffe Apartment as God or Whomever made a peace offering after two days of torrential rain.

It’s been a long day. Hope everyone has a good night sleep, whether you’re still in flashlight mode or not. I’m one of the unlucky four percent with a flooded basement and no electricity. But I am lucky enough to have good friends who’ve shared their power and their internet, and after getting up at 4 a.m. to try to cover the storm, was even able to sneak in an afternoon nap.

If you haven’t already, tell us how you weathered your storm, and what rainbows — real or figurative — came your way.

Trees Keep Coming Down From Irene

Update: another huge town tree fell at about 5:15 PM on Christopher St. below Chestnut -
straight across the street. No passage.

Montclair/Bloomfield arborist Steve Schuckman told folks to beware — here’s more proof. We’ve learned of two more trees that came down in the last half hour in Montclair.
This huge tree on Plymouth came down (top).

Another tree snaps on Cooper Ave — half the tree came down, pulling a phone line with it.

PSE&G: Be Prepared for “Lengthy Outages”

PSE&G says there are 330,000 customers currently without power and that they should prepare for “potentially lengthy outages” while power crews work around the clock to restore electricity. We’re hearing estimates of five to seven days. Here is the current PSE&G outage map for Essex County.

The storm is over, the sky is was blue, and people suffering from a day and a half of cabin fever are sauntering around outside like it was an Easter parade. Don’t, says Montclair Mayor Jerry Fried.

“The one single most important thing is that people need to stay in their homes,” he said. “It’s really dangerous out there.” Waterlogged trees are still in danger of falling. ”Stay inside,” he reiterated. “Don’t be fooled.”

Irene Re-Creates Lake Watsessing, Bloomfield

Back in 1865, there was a Lake Watsessing (vintage photos from Frank Gerard Godleswki; Irene photos from Caroline Hayes):

I was very glad to see this post. The running in the street around here drives me crazy, mostly because the the majority of the runners I've encountered (not every runner)seem to think that it's their right to take up half the street when what they are doing is in fact illegal. And let's not be silly. Yes, concrete is hard on the joints, but the pavement isn't that much better. It's not like the roads are made of track rubber.
