Sunday, Aug 28, 2011 10:54am  |  COMMENTS (0)

UPDATE:

The Millburn Office of Emergency Management is imploring residents and visitors of Millburn to remain in their homes and to not drive during this emergency. In addition, people are reminded to not touch any wires and remember down trees can be energized with deadly high voltage. Before crews can remove trees, the electric company must de-energize the wires.

This is an extremely dangerous and deadly time, please stay in doors and allow emergency crews to conduct their operations.

As per New Jersey American Company the boil water alert will remain in effect for the next 48-hours.

From Millburn police:
At this juncture water is flowing over the top of the retaining wall in the South Mountain area of Millburn Township.
Although water is flowing over the top of the wall, as per our municipal Engineering Department the wall is in no danger of being breached. We are not recommending that anyone evacuate your home at this juncture. Please move to your 1st floor and stay out of your basements.
If you have a life hazard emergency, we will conduct a rescue operation. At this time, we have requested National Guard assets, if a full scale evacuation is required.
Please stay tight, stay in your homes, and stay tune for the most current information. All persons are reminded to not go out on to the streets or drive vehicles through standing water.

Our own Holly Korus measures six 16 inches of water in her basement courtesy of Hurricane Irene? How many inches have you got? The Montclair Fire Department is responding to numerous calls with requests for help pumping out flooded home basements with 4 feet or more of water.

The MFD will respond to help pump out basements with four (4) feet of water or more. Lower basement water levels, pools, and back yards are not a priority at this time.

Ceiling Compromised on Claremont Ave., Montclair

Flooding in the basement is bad, but how what if you are waiting out Irene with this. A reader on Claremont Ave. between North Mountain and Valley, writes of a huge hole in the ceiling of her apartment. She says there was already a leak in the kitchen ceiling that her landlord refused to fix. It started out as a leak with some plaster falling a couple of months ago. .

…now have a huge hole in our ceiling. And it’s getting bigger–we have three other leaks, and the ceiling is bulging outwards, filled with water. A contractor was sent to look at it two months ago. He said it was caused by the fact that the gutters of the house have never been cleaned, and said he would add it to his list and would get around to fixing it eventually. We never saw him again. Because they never fixed it, it’s gotten much worse overnight, and is spreading across the ceiling. We have collected about two gallons of water since around 7 p.m. last night

Keeping Your Pets Calm During Violent Weather

At the first sound of thunder, your dog runs for cover under the kitchen table. Your cat has gone hiding somewhere and you haven’t seen her for several hours. Are these normal behaviors? How can you comfort your cat or dog during stormy weather?

Pets take their cues from us, says Kathy Diamond Davis, author of Therapy Dogs, who offers these tips for calming dogs during a storm:
.
• Cuddle her. She may really fear of being left alone as it thunders.
• Distract him. If he’s having fun, he’s less likely to focus on the storm.
• If your pet is so frantic that she tries to escape or is destructive, keep her in a crate or other confined space if that calms her.
• Pump up background noise. Turning on a fan may help soothe a dog.

I was very glad to see this post. The running in the street around here drives me crazy, mostly because the the majority of the runners I've encountered (not every runner)seem to think that it's their right to take up half the street when what they are doing is in fact illegal. And let's not be silly. Yes, concrete is hard on the joints, but the pavement isn't that much better. It's not like the roads are made of track rubber.
