Tornados and Hurricanes and Flooding, Oh My

A tornado watch has been added to our list of potential weather woes, but I just got off the phone with meteorologist Michael Sager of AccuWeather.com, who laid out the most likely weather scenario in our area.

The highest winds we should see should be in the 50-60 mph range, and those will probably come between 4 a.m. and 8 a.m. when the hurricane reaches us. Winds in this range wouldn’t necessarily require seeking refuge in a window-free room. “Hiding in a basement of a close for this is pretty extreme,” Sager said.

As a foodie, I wondered what your readers will turn to for their ‘Go-To’ foods? As a foodie who’s watching her weight, I have chosen some healthy canned foods to eat alone and pair up with existing food in my fridge. Tuna is the main protein and here is my salad for tonight & breakfast:

Saturday night Waiting-for-Irene Salad

-Can of 12 oz Tuna, sauteed in onions/red pepper/sesame oil
-Leftover sauteed Green Beans
-Grape Tomatoes, chopped
-Leftover cauliflower
-Sundried Tomatoes
-1/2 chopped Boiled Egg
-Raw Onion
-Whole Pecans
-Capers
-Lemongrass in jar
-1 slice of high fiber Wasa Bread, crispy

Layer that up, add a lttle sesame oil if needed. Juice from tomatoes provides enough liquid for me. Wasa Bread, complements salad while providing needed fiber. Continue Reading

Last-Minute Hurricane Tips

BY  |  Saturday, Aug 27, 2011 10:58am  |  COMMENTS (1)

Water? Check. Flashlights and batteries? Check. Wine and Haagen Daz? Check. The hurricane is supposed to arrive sometime tonight, and you’ve ventured out to the stores for the final time. What to do while you’re waiting?

  • Remove the missiles lawn furniture from your yard. They’re projectiles if the wind gets up to hurricane force, or we get some hurricane-generated twisters.
  • Take the ice out of your freezer and put it in a cooler. If electricity goes out, ice is a kitchen flood waiting to happen. But ice in a cooler is a temporary fridge for your perishables.
  • Charge everything: Your laptop, your radios, your smart phone. Squeeze as much time as you can out of all your devices.
  • Fill pitchers and bottles with water for drinking. Fill bathtubs with water for flushing toilets and washing.
  • Get important documents — especially homeowners insurance papers — together, put them in a plastic bag and store in your emergency kit, along with your medicines and flashlights.
  • Follow Baristanet on Twitter (@baristanet) and Facebook in case electricity goes out all your communications are on your mobile.
  • This tip comes from Soprano Sue: Make a pot of coffee before the storm hits. That way you’ll be caffeinated even if you can’t brew the stuff tomorrow morning.
