It’s not too late to get advance tickets for the screening tonight (Monday Sept. 26) of “Pray the Devil Back to Hell,” a documentary about Liberian women who took on warlords to win peace for their country in 2003. The film has won awards all over the film festival circuit and will be part of a PBS series, “Women, War & Peace,” which premiers Oct. 11.

Montclair’s Mary Alice William will moderate a talkback after the film with the filmmakers.

The event is sponsored by the Montclair Film Festival, NJTV, Blue Wave and Montclair State University. You can buy your $20 tax-deductible ticket here.

The screening will be at 7:30 p.m. at MSU’s Kasser Theater.

Gregory G. Allen: You’ve Got To Be Taught

I don’t want to take on an entire campaign (and I can admit a year ago I even blogged with my own story of how ‘it got better’), but I can’t help but wonder if we are sending the correct message to the youth who are being bullied and feel so alone. Think back to when you were that age. Life was not about the future. It was the here and now. Everything felt intense — no matter the size of the issue. If parents told you things would be better later, did you want to hear that or did you want the problem fixed then?

I think it is great to remind youth that it will eventually get better down the road, but I really believe we need to be helping them in the present. How do they deal with those feelings of being different? Who can they talk to? What tools are there to cope with it? I applaud the groups taking on the bullies head on. That must be addressed. I agree with the organizations and states attempting to make laws against bullying (a hate crime). But if only we could get to these kids while they are in the depth of their despair and somehow encourage them to know they are special and wanted and loved.

Dead Deer Greets Drivers

BY  |  Monday, Sep 26, 2011 9:30am  |  COMMENTS (6)

If you’re driving into Montclair from the west, one of the first things to greet you — for the past few days at least — is a dead deer lying on the grass at the intersection of Bloomfield Avenue and Lloyd Road, right near the entrance to MKA.

One nearby resident snapped a photo of the deer (which we’ll spare you) at 5 a.m. today. Another resident says it’s been there since Friday. Anybody want to start a pool to see when the carcass will be removed?

Dogs in Tutus! Dogs in Bling!

Everybody who was anybody in the canine beauty world was there.

The second Annual New Jersey Barking Beauty Pageant, held yesterday at the Wilshire Grand Hotel in West Orange, was all about the dogs … and their feathers, tutus, tiaras and jewel-studded collars. Emceed by TV Star Leslie Hughes with her Yorkshire Terrier Salli Sue, canine cuties strutted their stuff before a panel of celebrity judges in Active Wear, Glamour Wear and Talent competitions. Judges included Meghan Alexander (Inside Edition), Tara Bernie (Access Hollywood) and Lou Martini (The Sopranos). Special guest Tiffany Rose from American Idol posed for photos with her dog Madison. Last year’s winner, chihuahua Tommi T. was on hand to help crown Grand Prize Winner Maximilian as The 2011 New Jersey Barking Beauty. All proceeds will benefit the Mt. Pleasant Animal Shelter, a no kill facility located in East Hanover.

Bloomfield Harvest Fest

Bloomfield Harvest Fest continues at Bloomfield Center today, come rain or come shine. I was there yesterday when the streets were alive with activity. Local bands were playing the main stage, broadcast music was coming from the booth of KTU Radio and a curbside cabaret was underway outside Pianos Bar & Grill. Street vendors, authentic festival food, games, prizes and kiddie rides makes this a family event for young and old. The festival is on Broad Street between Bloomfield and Belleville Avenues. 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Admission is free.

The Salvation Army Montclair Honors Carmen and Yogi Berra

The Salvation Army of Montclair kicked off the first of many events throughout the weekend celebrating its 120 year anniversary by honoring Carmen and Yogi Berra, Jacqueline McMullen and Michele Kroeze with Pinnacle of Service Awards at a donor reception yesterday.

“A town without a Salvation Army would be like a country without baseball,” said Carmen Berra, an advisory board member for about 20 years.  “Especially the Yankees,” said Yogi Berra.  The couple accepted their award for their contributions to Montclair in a videotaped segment since they were scheduled to attend an event on September 23 at Yankee Stadium marking the 50th anniversary of Mickey Mantle and Roger Maris’ “home run contest.”   Continue Reading

Wheeler Antabanez: In Search of Resusci Anne

BY  |  Saturday, Sep 24, 2011 11:00am  |  COMMENTS (5)

To EMS workers in training, Resusci Anne is simply a mannequin for practicing CPR. But she is well known to the urban explorers, county workers and motorists who frequent the area of the Essex County Hospital Center for other reasons. The abandoned mental hospital, also know as Overbrook, is supposedly haunted by the ghosts of former patients who died within the red brick walls. According to local legend, Resusci Anne acts as a body for the spirits, almost like a puppet, enabling phantoms to walk the halls in a corporeal form. She has turned up in the morgue, the cafeteria, various seclusion cells and she can frequently be seen in the MICA unit staring out the window at passing motorists — sometimes with a head sometimes without. watch this short video by wheeler antabanez as he goes on a search for the haunted Resusci Anne. Warning to the more sensitive Baristanet viewers: this video is pretty scary. If you have a heart condition you might want to skip this one.

Baristaville Open Houses: Sunday, Sept. 25

BY  |  Saturday, Sep 24, 2011 9:00am  |  COMMENTS (3)

There is truly something for everyone when it comes to this weekend’s open houses. About 110 properties are showing, ranging from a $159,000 Condo in Bloomfield to a grand $2.5 million Colonial in Millburn. There’s also a variety of styles available, most notably an ultra-modern Contemporary in Maplewood. New listings and reductions are plentiful.

193 Thomas St., Bloomfield
List Price: $355,000
Taxes: $8,252
Acreage: 0.15 Acres
3BR/2BA

This nicely maintained eight-room Colonial, built in 1908 and renovated in 2005, is close to New York City transportation and the Glen Ridge border. The house boasts an updated kitchen with stainless steel appliances; hardwood floors; new windows; a screened-in front porch; and a patio. There is a large walk-up attic that could be finished. Lastly, there is a colorful finished basement and overhauled one car detached garage. Open house 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.

68 Cleveland Terr., Bloomfield
List Price: $345,000
Taxes: $13,382
Acreage: 0.51 Acres
8BR/4BA

Also in town, this circa 1918 13-room Colonial stands out due to its size and price point. However, while the house is not structurally lacking, and has a good location, overlooking a park, some aspects of the interior are dated.  Notably, the kitchen, though large, will likely not appeal to those with a modern disposition. On the plus side, there is a two-bedroom suite on the first floor; beamed ceilings and a fireplace in the living room; and an open front porch and patio. There is a full, unfinished basement and two car detached garage.Open house 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.
