This is what my Halloween was like: It was cold, yes, but I decided to make the best of a crappy situation for my kids and friends. I called my friend to invite her family over before trick or treating (before we knew it was canceled) so I could paint the kids’ faces like I do every year. She was happy to get the invite, as their family has had a tragic and horrendous loss in the last week. I had the fireplaces going, cider and pizza. She brought trays of food that people had sent and we figured out how to heat everything up like pioneer women. We laughed and drank wine and I felt incredibly blessed to be part of this family’s healing process.
In fact is was an amazing night that I will never forget.
As my dad would say, “Everything else is mice nuts.”
It ain’t that bad. I shake my head at people who are so adamantly opposed to the time-shifting of Trick or Treating. This world is full of things to be outraged about….pick something else.

What a wonderful and uplifting story. Thanks for sharing, Holly!
Well put. You guys are such gracious hosts!
Geez, I was expecting more “I’m at the edge” or “I’m going to blow” and here’s Holly getting all sentimental.
Okay, you’re re-hired.
You can ring my bell Friday — but I’m hoping the power is on and I can ring yours — make sure there’s enough mice nuts for my capitalist trick or treaters!
Lovely story, Holly. I, too, had a memorable and charming Halloween evening as a blackout refugee at a friend’s house, who hosted dinner for 6 different families without power. Nice to have caring friends…
“Evrything else is mice nuts” just got added to my stabel of ahndy useful phrases, up there with “Keep calm and carry on”. Thanks for the good story.
We will be handing out both mice nuts and moth balls on Halloween night.
The comments are closed on the Hedge Fund Manager post but I was a bit shocked that he defended himself by saying, “Am I going to open a bottle of wine with my friends while families in our town with kids are sitting in the cold?”
I just may make him a cape and bring it over on Halloween!!!!
Holly, sometimes people just can’t see the forest for the low lying, misty clouds…
BTW for our very literal friends, our dear Holly is not really handing out those things on pseudo-Halloween tomorrow! I’ll bet she is coating some pignoli with maybe butter, cinnamon & brown sugar, maybe crushed graham cracker, and baking them… and serving ‘em up with mini marshmallows!
Kay he was saving us all. We should feel blessed. Great now I have the Underdog song in my head.
You could not be more wrong about the moth balls. The tough thing is spreading those little legs while I de-ball them with a tweezer!!!! Mice nuts are easier to get.
If I have time perhaps I will make and hand out chocolate covered hummingbird tongues.
