Garrison Keillor Reads His Own Words Tonight at [words] in Maplewood

Monday, Nov 28, 2011 9:36am  |  COMMENTS (2)

Garrison Keillor, who hosts and writes NPR’s “A Prairie Home Companion,” is reading from his comic novel  “A Christmas Blizzard” tonight at [words] bookstore in Maplewood at 7:30.  Seats for the event are sold out, but you can get on the SRO list by calling the store at (973) 763-9500.  To be admitted, you have to buy the book.

Owner Jonah Zimiles says he is excited to have Keillor come, but points out that the independently owned bookstore, founded two and a half years ago, has also hosted three former governors and Mayor Koch, among others.  They currently host about 17 events a month.

In addition to its community events, the store has a vocational program for people with autism that gives them work experience in the context of a typical business, Zimiles says, which he guesses may have appealed to Keillor.

Zimiles and his wife Ellen founded the store two and a half years years ago when she saw that Goldfinch, Maplewood’s  independent bookstore, was going out of business.  “We decided to step up, even though we weren’t retailers,” Zimiles explains.  He and his wife were both lawyers.  They kept all eleven employees, moving the store from 97A Baker Street to a larger space on 179 Maplewood Avenue.

While space for tonight’s event is limited, Zimiles says that Keillor will stay afterwards to sign books.  “He’s probably the most famous of the non politicians we’ve had,” Zimiles says.  Zimiles had to turn people away for a reading by National Magazine Award winner Matt Taibi.  But there should be “unlimited” time for Keillor to sign books.

Keillor has hosted the popular variety radio show “A Prairie Home Companion,” with its popular segment “The News from Lake Wobegon,” a fictional Minnesota town, since 1974.   Famously he performs that segment without notes, ending with the tag “and that’s the news from Lake Wobegon, where all the women are strong, the men are good looking, and all the children are above average.” The show inspired a film of the same name, directed by Robert Altman, and written by Keillorin 2006, which starred Lily Tomlin and Meryl Streep, and featuring Keillor.  “A Christmas Blizzard” tells the story of a man trying to get to Hawaii over Christmas, hampered by a storm.

[words] is at 179 Maplewood Avenue.  For reservations, call (973) 763-9500.

At Least You’re Not Living in a McMansion

BY  |  Sunday, Nov 27, 2011 9:26am  |  COMMENTS (58)

Well, denizens of Baristaville: your taxes may be high, your commute may be a bitch, your 100-year-old house may be drafty and require continuous repairs, and you may have to worry about the occasional armed robbery. But at least you don’t live in a big whale of a McMansion out in Mendham or Randolph. Continue Reading

The Magic of Shopping Local

BY  |  Saturday, Nov 26, 2011 11:55am  |  COMMENTS (16)

You wouldn’t catch me anywhere near a mall yesterday, and like many, the relentless ambush of my email box by retailers of all stripes had me sick of shopping before I’d even served my Thanksgiving turkey. Nevertheless, a certain 23-year-old daughter wanted to go shopping, and I was able to combine two virtues — walking and shopping local — into a pleasant little stroll into Montclair Center. The lovely weather continues today, and I heartily recommend the walk/shop combo. Continue Reading

Guster: Feel Good Guitar Pop at the Wellmont, 11/26

BY  |  Saturday, Nov 26, 2011 10:13am  |  COMMENTS (0)

Every year, Guster — a sweet, lyrical acoustic pop-guitar quartet, which originated (as a trio) in the dorms of Tufts University back in the early 1990′s — plays a Thanksgiving weekend concert in the New York metropolitan area. This year, they’re in Baristaville, at the Wellmont Theater. They opened their double gig last night, to a happy, jumping, sing-along kind of crowd, and will be back on the stage tonight, Saturday, November 26. It’s a light-hearted show that’ll please the whole extended family, if they’re still around. They’re a fun and friendly band, and Brian Rosenworcel’s unusual high-arching, hand-drumming techniques are not to be missed.

Make sure to get to the Wellmont in time for Brett Dennen’s opening act (8 p.m.). The California folk/pop musician has been a rising star on television and at music festivals, and cites Van Morrison, Paul Simon and Neil Young as role models. His distinctive, raspy voice and laid back (almost reggae beat) style, are a nice way to begin the evening.

Thanks for coming to town, fellas. Last night’s show was the gravy on my turkey and the ice cream on my pumpkin pie.

Tickets are available for tonight’s show at the door, or online (click here).

The Weekend

BY  |  Friday, Nov 25, 2011 10:52am  |  COMMENTS (6)

Hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving!

Today you’re either shopping (hopefully local), going to the gym to work off the massive amount of calories you ate yesterday, eating leftovers and lounging around (you can always start that diet tomorrow), doing something fun with the family, or working (Boo!).

Starting tomorrow there are some nice ways to enjoy Baristaville.

You can enjoy the sights and sounds of the season at Thomas Edison’s home in Llewellyn Park during Holidays at Glenmont. Glenmont will be decorated much as it was while the Edison family lived there. Favorite musical pieces will be playing and greenery and red poinsettias will deck the mantles above the fireplaces. Staircases will be ringed with boughs and red ribbon bows and wreaths will hang in every window. In the Den, the majestic 10 foot tree will be lit and the presents underneath will be waiting as if the Edison children Madeleine, Theodore and Charles, will soon come running down the stairs from their rooms – after they’ve checked their stockings in the upstairs Living Room!  Family china will be displayed on the Dining Room table and the scene will be completed with holiday cards that were received by the family.

Holidays at Glenmont
Saturday, November 26 and Sunday, November 27 at from 10 am – 4 pm
Thomas Edison National Historical Park, 211 Main Street, West Orange, NJ
$7 per person.

Black Friday 2011 Survival Guide

BY  |  Friday, Nov 25, 2011 7:53am  |  COMMENTS (4)

Black Friday 2011 is already in full swing, and the annual madness started at a Los Angeles Walmart with a woman pepper spraying other shoppers who got too close to her merchandise. There’s also some Occupy Black Friday protests planned. Our advice? Stay far away from anything resembling a mall or mega-store today. Head to any of Baristaville’s local shopping districts and shop local. Continue Reading

Happy Thanksgiving Baristaville!

We’re grateful for lots of things, but especially grateful for you dear readers. Have a wonderful Thanksgiving, whether you’re staying local, watching the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade, running the Ashenfelter, going over the river and through the woods, or navigating the LIE with pies (yikes!) like me this year. Put on some turkey tunes, mix up some cocktails and have a wonderful Thanksgiving!

I was very glad to see this post. The running in the street around here drives me crazy, mostly because the the majority of the runners I've encountered (not every runner)seem to think that it's their right to take up half the street when what they are doing is in fact illegal. And let's not be silly. Yes, concrete is hard on the joints, but the pavement isn't that much better. It's not like the roads are made of track rubber.
