Police Arrest Glen Ridge Resident for Stabbing Outside Erie Saloon, 12/23

A suspect has been arrested in the stabbing that took place on Dec. 23 at 1:55 AM near the Erie Saloon on Depot Square. The victim, a nineteen year old Verona resident, was found near the soccer dome and transported to University Hospital with chest wounds.

While in the area, police were able to locate a witness, who stated that the victim and friends had been at the Erie Saloon approximately twenty minutes prior to police arrival. During this time, the victim and a friend engaged in an argument near the rear door of the establishment. The witness stated that the suspect was outside the Erie Saloon smoking a cigarette. The suspect then told the victim that he did not like it when people like the victim and his friend “caused drama.” The victim and his friend continued to engage in an argument, followed by the suspect making a “wise remark” to the victim. The witness stated the victim responded by shoving the suspect to the ground and screaming, “Get outta here!” The witness stated that the victim and the suspect fought on the ground before another friend of the victim’s attempted to help. During this time, the suspect pulled a knife out and stabbed the victim in the chest. The suspect then fled the scene on foot.
That morning, detectives conducted a daytime search of the area in an attempt to recover the weapon used in this incident. During this search, detectives located a knife in some brush in the area of Walnut Street. This knife is believed to be the weapon utilized in the assault.
As a result of an ongoing investigation, detectives identified Matthew Muccia as the suspect in this incident. Muccia, 22, of Glen Ridge, responded to Montclair Police Headquarters on 12/26/11 at approximately 2:35 PM and was placed under arrest. He was charged with aggravated assault with a weapon, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, and unlawful possession of a weapon. Bail was set at $15,000. He was later released after bail was posted.

A Baristanet Guide to Broadway (and Off!) This Week

Stage Door at the Book of Mormon

One of the great things about living in Baristaville is living so close to the Great White Way.  Broadway’s expensive, but there are deals throughout the year– even at the holidays.  There are some added matinees too.  Seeing a Broadway show with the whole family is something special.  Even if the show has some holes, you can count on it being a visual treat, particularly if it’s a musical.  If there are stars (hello Daniel Radcliffe!) it can be fun to wait at the stage door for them (but note:  in between matinee and evening performance stars sometimes stay in the building to rest).  You might have trouble getting tickets to “The Book of Mormon,” but there are other treasures to be had that are just as much fun.  I had a terrific time at “Godspell” (musical), and “Seminar” (play).    Leads to discount tickets are below– you can get a TKTS app for your iphone and find out what was there the day before, which can be a great predictor.

But some of the shows on discount tickets are turkeys.  See “Bonnie and Clyde” only if you don’t mind predictable stories and music that stops the action (the projections are pretty).  “Spider-Man:  Turn Off the Dark” is a pretty big disappointment, although some kids will enjoy the flying anyway and Bono’s music would appeal if it were reprised more often.  “The Lion King” and “Mary Poppins” are perennial kid-pleasers.  As for “On a Clear Day You Can See Forever,” you’d be better off just putting on a Harry Connick, Jr. CD– making the Barbara Harris (played in the movie by Barbra Streisand) role into a gay man makes no sense at all (in a reincarnation plot that never made much sense) and the op-art sets will literally strain your eyes.  There are also some great shows worth seeing off and off-off Broadway.  I’m particularly looking forward to seeing “The Pirates of Penzance” by the Gilbert & Sullivan players with my family later this week.

Here are my picks, and at the end of the article I’ve offered some places to look for discount tickets and some etiquette tips I’ve learned in the trenches!

TSA Worker Fired After Not Screening Bags at Newark Airport

BY  |  Tuesday, Dec 27, 2011 10:33am  |  COMMENTS (1)

You have to take off your shoes, your earrings and your watch, spread your possessions across multiple bins and declare your breast milk ahead of time. But — oops! — a TSA employee at Newark Airport actually let checked bags bound for international flights through the system without inspecting them on Thursday, during the big Christmas holiday rush. The bags were pulled before the planes took off and the employee has been suspended, NJ.com reports. Continue Reading

Santa joined The Rev. John A. Mennel and volunteers to sing Christmas carols to the guests at Toni’s Kitchen yesterday. A wonderful sumptuous Christmas lunch/dinner was served to all who walked through the door. It was a heart- and soul-warming event to witness.

Yes, that is a security tag on the gloves. Oops.

Did the Santa in your house screw anything up? In fact, how did he do? What was the best present of Christmas/Chanukah 2011 — given or received?

Merry Christmas Baristaville!

BY  |  Saturday, Dec 24, 2011 11:30pm  |  COMMENTS (2)

The kids are in bed, dreaming about what the morning will bring. Santa is almost here (I know because his cookies and milk have already disappeared). The pork is brining and everything that could be made in advance is wrapped in foil in the fridge. The man is grappling with some assembly required. Even with all the shopping and preparation, year after year, the magic of Christmas, like faith, is always there. I’m still moved by hearing Oh Holy Night and The Little Drummer Boy, by watching holiday movies and seeing my kids still get excited about hanging a favorite ornament on the tree. Amid all kinds of change, the rituals of Christmas are a comforting constant, a special time.

All of us at Baristanet wish you and yours a magical Christmas, filled with moments of joy and hopefully, peace, too.

What Jews Can Do on Christmas

Yes, it’s a cultural stereotype, and yes it’s true: Jews do spend Christmas Day going to Chinese restaurants and to the movies.

Most of the area Chinese restaurants — including our favorite, Chengdu 1 in Cedar Grove — are open on Christmas Day. But I advise Members of the Tribe to kick it up a notch and go for all-you-can-eat-sushi at Mikado 23 near Willowbrook Mall. AMC Loews Wayne is practically next door and showing Descendants, Sherlock Holmes, Dragon Tattoo, Tintin and more.   Continue Reading

Pamela Moed must have a million things to do since a Christmas tree caught fire and destroyed her house on Wednesday night. One of them, it turns out, is being the gracious recipient of an outpouring of love and community support.

I was very glad to see this post. The running in the street around here drives me crazy, mostly because the the majority of the runners I've encountered (not every runner)seem to think that it's their right to take up half the street when what they are doing is in fact illegal. And let's not be silly. Yes, concrete is hard on the joints, but the pavement isn't that much better. It's not like the roads are made of track rubber.
