Burglaries, shoplifting, motor vehicle theft. From Lt. Scott Buehler:

Burglary

On 12/20/11 at approximately 12:30 PM, police responded to a single-family residence on Harrison Avenue on a report of a burglary. Upon arrival, police spoke to the victim, who stated that on 12/19/11 at approximately 9:00 PM, he was in his living room watching television. Approximately an hour later, he discovered that a cellular telephone and a laptop computer were missing from his kitchen table. He also discovered that $250 in cash had been taken from the kitchen as well. It appears that entry to the residence was gained through an unlocked kitchen door. There are no suspects at this time. BY  |  Thursday, Dec 22, 2011 1:04pm  |  COMMENTS (1)

Taste what happens when artist Marina Zurkow and animal hunter/exotic chef Gene Rurka get together in The Cute, The Bad, and The Ugly, a unique participatory food performance on Thursday, January 12, 7-8:30 p.m. ($40 Members, $50 nonmembers).

The interactive presentation and discussion is an inaugural event for MAM Contemporaries (a new special interest group at the museum). Inspired by the exhibit Marina Zurkow: Friends, Enemies, and Others, the event includes a lecture and tour by the artist and a tasting with Rurka, known for his appearances on The Late Show with David Letterman and Animal Planet. Referencing Zurkow’s print series Heraldic Crests for Invasive Species (2011), the evening will focus on how we think about food, animals, nature, and culture, with a tasting of three “invasive species” hors d’oeuvres — The Cute (Rabbit), The Bad (Knotweed), and The Ugly (Boar), along with mint-infused wine. Each guest will receive one-of-a-kind collectors’ cards designed by the artist.

To purchase tickets, call Talia Selove at 973-259-5147, email tselove@montclairartmuseum.org or visit the store at MAM. What’s the strangest thing you’ve ever eaten?

The town’s [Montclair] recent discussion about whether to place a menorah alongside The Tree in the town center points to a larger question: Are these religious symbols or cultural symbols? If they are religious, the faith-state divide should hold firm: So most of us agree that we should let the crosses and creches, the menorahs and stars of David, the crescents, the Buddhas, and the Krishnas be held sacred and put on display at their own places of worship. Our municipal government should not display them at taxpayers’ expense.

But The Tree . . . is that a religious or a cultural symbol? The short answer is: It is usually seen as a Christian religious symbol. The longer answer is: It shouldn’t be, and here’s why . . .

Jollyfy Your Holiday

High-tech entrepreneur Kris Ramanathan of Glen Ridge, who is co-founder and CEO of netomat, a New York-based mobile web company, has a new iPhone app out for Christmas. When he told us what Jollyfy was — an app to add templates to your iPhone videos — we insisted that he embarrass himself by singing a Christmas song in front of the train station and let us record it using his app. In addition to putting a Christmas tree or menorah in front of your video, you can also insert a pepper-spraying cop or even a template of your own creation. Chris Gethard Gets Revenge for Rutgers

BY  |  Thursday, Dec 22, 2011 9:54am  |  COMMENTS (1)

The rivalry between Rutgers and Princeton is legendary. The first intercollegiate football game ever was Rutgers v. Princeton in 1869. The two schools were engaged in a vicious “Cannon War” less than a decade later. But nothing can top the story of pure class warfare told by West Orange native Chris Gethard on This American Life this past week about his ambush on his Princeton nemesis in 1998, when he was a freshman at Rutgers.

Montclair firefighters stayed on the scene all last night, monitoring a fire that began shortly before 5 p.m. on the first floor of 5 Stonebridge Court and wound up devouring much of the house up to the roof.

Multiple reports indicate theowner, Ed Moed, was home with his three small children when the fire erupted, heard a crackling noise, discovered the fire and ushered his three children to safety. Apparently, the fire began with a Christmas tree.

“That’s what the reports indicate,” said Montclair Fire Chief Kevin Allen, who was on the scene this morning.

UPDATE: 7:19 p.m. After initial reports that the fire had been knocked down, it has now spread to the house’s roof and mutual aid has been called in.

Lots of smoke and multiple engines reporting to a fire at 5 Stonebridge Court in Montclair.

Montclair Councilor Rich Murnick, who is friends with the homeowners and is on the scene, says everybody is safe, but the owners cannot get close enough to determine how much damage was done. He believes the blaze was caused by a Christmas tree.

Breaking News Network reported that the fire may have been related to a Christmas tree.

Name That Cocktail of Christmas Past

This week you will be visited by three spirits: The Spirit of Christmas Past, the Spirit of Christmas Present and the Spirit of Christmas Yet to Come. No, this is not an undigested bit of beef, a blot of mustard, a crumb of cheese, a fragment of underdone potato. Shall I lead on?
