A fire caused that erupted on the second floor of 75 Lloyd Road in Montclair shortly before 8 p.m. was  extinguished by the Montclair Fire Department within about half an hour. It was apparently caused by a candle. About 90 minutes later, there were still three fire engines and multiple rescue vehicles on the scene — and Lloyd Road was blocked off between Union Street and Hoburg Place.
Residents — including at least one tenant — stood outside, looking at the broken windows on the second floor. They said the house had been occupied but everybody got out safely. The extent of damage was not known, but the structure appears to be intact and according to Breaking News Network, the blaze was limited to a single room.

“Residents — including at least one tenant — stood outside, looking at the broken windows on the second floor.”
A “tenant?” Who knew there were renters on Lloyd Road?
Glad to hear everyone is OK.
Did they ever figure out what caused the more serious December fire in town? The initial story that gained traction was Christmas Tree fire. Fire chiefs and news reporters around the US were discussing that fire as confirming the old dangerous dried out flammable Christmas tree canard. Which really makes no sense at all. Mythbusters did a show this year putting to bed once and for all the Chtistmas tree fire canard. They loaded the driest tree imaginable with thousands of lights and could get anything to happen. More likely some other cause totally unrelated to their tree.
Not to minimize the seriousness of the fire and loss, but the Christmas tree light argument would seem to bear out some additional investigation. I can understand an electrical short or an overloaded circuit in an older home, but this house was only a few years old. Growing up many people used lights that got very hot, but anything remotely modern doesn’t get hot to the touch. Candles, on the other hand, start a lot of fires.
We talked all last week about that tragic fire in Stamford where the live-in contractor put burning ashes from the fireplace into plastic bags and put them on the porch. Why would anyone do such a thing? Now that’s a head scratcher.
I did’t realize it was a contractor that put the ashes on the porch. Last night on the news someone said that the children put the ashes there themselves because they didn’t want Santa getting burned by them when he came down the chimney. Such a shame, it’s just terrible.
I’m glad everyone got out safely on Lloyd Road last night.
That’s horrible, and the only explanation that seems even remotely logical. I’d originally heard that the contractor took them out around 3:00 AM. Who is to know. I don’t know of any child that isn’t explicitly warned about going anywhere near the fireplace, or fire of any kind. Still tough to picture a couple of 7 and 9 year old girls doing something like that.
