Did Christie Make a Naughty Joke in New Hampshire?

BY  |  Monday, Jan 09, 2012 3:38pm  |  COMMENTS (41)

Governor Christie, stumping for Romney in New Hampshire, responded to female hecklers last night with a joke that some are saying is an oral sex reference: “You know, something may be going down tonight, but it ain’t going to be jobs, sweetheart.”

Torie Bosch, filing on Slate, is puzzled by why the GOP seems to be embracing Christie’s gaffe.

The video, which does not make Christie look great, wasn’t some hidden-camera “gotcha” depicting a private moment, a la the 2006 “macaca” video that may have cost George Allen his Senate seat. Rather, it was uploaded to the New Jersey GOP’s YouTube account. They seem to think his remark about “going down” is a zinger, something to be proud of, rather than recognizing it as flagrantly demeaning, even misogynistic.

Tell us what you think, and for goodness sake, keep it clean.

Christie was happy to be with President Obama when the President came to NJ in the aftermath of Hurricane Irene.
There’s those great pix of the two of them walking and smiling.

Actually, the “dirty” version didn’t even cross my mind. I took it mean “going down” as “something is happening here tonight.”

  3. POSTED BY Georgette Gilmore  |  January 09, 2012 @ 4:17 pm

He’s a jerk and calling the woman “sweetheart” is sexist, but, like Martta, I believe he meant “something is happening here tonight” not an oral sex reference.

  4. POSTED BY anne prince  |  January 09, 2012 @ 4:19 pm

I object more to his calling the women making the statement “sweetheart” even if they were hecklers.

  5. POSTED BY zephyrus  |  January 09, 2012 @ 5:01 pm

I think the “going down” was a reference to a cheesesteak sandwich, a chocolate malt shake, some lemon merengue pie, a chicken burrito with green sauce, and maybe some tuna casserole.

I call my chick friends sweetheart all the time. And darling. And cookieface.

  7. POSTED BY profwilliams  |  January 09, 2012 @ 5:17 pm

This is one of those jokes that folks find after it was said, because it wasn’t a joke.

As for being sexist… Google “Obama sexist” and you’ll find how dumb and slippery this line of fake hurt is.

Frankly, I find his “Jersey” this and “Jersey” that more offensive than anything.

But really, is anyone surprised by this guy? It’s Christie being Christie.

Christie is a naughty boy, suggesting oral sex as he did, but I like the fact that our Guv is Catholic. ( hello cathar and herb ) . We haven’t had one of those up there, at least in the office for president, for 52 years now. Half a century is too long.
Chris’ quote reminds me of the Catholic girls that used to hike their plaid skirts up above the knees after Catholic High School let out at 3 PM. We’d enjoy seeing them on the GG train in Brooklyn back in the 1970′s, as us Brooklyn Tech guys shared the subway cars with them ( hello Dag T ) . Usually they’d get off the train in Greenpoint or Maspeth. But they were hawt.
And for those who like the Beatles tune “Please Please Me” but bitch and moan about Chris, I say you are a hypocrite. John Lennon himself said the song had a double entendre with regard to fellatio. Billy Joel was incorrect. Catholic girls do not start out too late.

I picture Christie’s jokes more along the lines of Clint Eastwood’s a la “Gran Torino”:

A teacher, a cop, and a fireman walk into a bar.
Bartender says, “Get the #@$$ out of here.”

Whether “going down” is a carnal reference or just an event reference,
Christie manages to put the pig squarely on the face of New Jersey. I’m not sure how well that will play in Kansas or Minnesota, but then we’ve seen how audiences at the debates booed the gay marine & cheered the Texas execution rate. It makes me wonder who would want to be a member of that club. The guy is a thug and a bully. He has played dirty politics as a U.S. attorney, and he has played dirty politics as a governor. It’ll catch up to him. He claims not to like “Jersey Shore,” but he sure does act like a member of the cast.

Spiro, poor Spiro, in your daily attempts to seem witty (someday, perhaps…someday), you really do overreach in your own limited terms. But your post above referencing such great “authorities” on the libido as Billy Joel (Christie Brinkley and Elizabeth Joel would likely beg to differ) and John Lennon (who else among us would even give Yoko ten minutes?) is exceptionally dumb even for you.

Perhaps even rife with religious bigotry, albeit of the seemingly mild kind. But then, Patrick Moynihan among others pointed out that anti-Catholicism is the liberals’ form of anti-Semitism,

Honestly, Spiro, you are an embarassment. Which, I realize, will never stop you from posting here. You are that shameless. And desperate for attention.

Oh, and we can’t forget that these fine upstanding “women” were interrupting an event. The moment you do that (and generally show a lack of respect) you deserved to be called whatever the speaker chooses.

These folks were lucky to ony be called sweetheart.

If Governor Christie were in the private sector, his statement would be considered sexual harassment and he’d be slammed with a lawsuit. I’m a Jersey girl and I am ashamed of my Governor. At the very least he owes those women an apology.

What’s amazing is that Christie hasn’t said more stupid things, the way he shoots his mouth off. His thoughts just come pouring out, with hardly a pause.

  16. POSTED BY Nellie  |  January 09, 2012 @ 8:58 pm

It is a real stretch to interpret his comment as referring to oral sex. Be careful if you tell people you’re going downstairs or going downtown.

  17. POSTED BY kit schackner  |  January 09, 2012 @ 9:03 pm

He has probably said many more offensive things, only the NJ GOP didn’t find them sufficiently ‘funny’ to post on YouTube.

  18. POSTED BY kit schackner  |  January 09, 2012 @ 9:10 pm

Nellie, I disagree. “Going down” is much downer and dirtier than “going downstairs” or “going downtown.” Christie loves playing it close to the edge. And he’s smart enough to know where that edge is. The “sweetheart” is just a sour cherry on the Crisco cake.

Punky illustrates the problem with the nebulous concept of “sexual harassment” as a punishible offense. It means whatever fuzzy thinkers like Punky believe it should mean. Thus brushing off a big-mouthed but-insky broad with the sobriquet sweetheart becomes a capital offense in her lexicon.

    Dag T,
I’ve been back there recently for fundraisers and mentoring – you might tell your old BT beau that it remains a great place for bright city kids, coming from families with modest means, often recent immigrants, to get a rigorous education. Yup, you still need to take the test and score well to get in. Tuition is still free. The surrounding neighborhood is now posh – once a hideous slum.

    Nellie,
    I believe you.

@ cro, those numbers, his size– a scale!! Brilliant!!

    The guy is HUGE.

@punky, please tell us all just how the circumstance in the above video– where these women interrupted a public event- would be perceived “in the private sector” as sexual harassment?

Please. It’s not like he walked into a library and said to the librarian, “hey sweetheart, where can I find ‘Tropic of Cancer?’”

Though I doubt Christie would mess with this librarian:

Hey look the one termer, you know the one that complains about the 1% and Wall St….who he just made his Chief of Staff.

    From The Huff post:

Jack Lew was chief operating officer of Citibank’s alternative investments division. And it was his division that made billions of dollars betting “U.S. homeowners would not be able to make their mortgage payments,” the Huffington Post reported.

“Lew made millions at Citi, including a bonus of nearly $950,000 in 2009 just a few months after the bank received billions of dollars in a taxpayer rescue, according to disclosure forms filed with the federal government. The bank is still partly owned by taxpayers.”

I love this little tidbit the one termer left out”

In announcing Lew today, the president mentioned his previous work at the State Department and in the Clinton administration. Obama did not mention Lew’s past of making billions of dollars for Citibank just a few years ago.

@herb, Obama might very well win. Who knows. I look forward to the fun of the election. But I didn’t know this about Lew and Citi. But it says more about Washington I fear, than Obama.

Trying to find someone to work in Washington, with experience, it seems one is always gonna find something in the closet. Though Obama should have brought it up.

Why don’t Politicians remember: “bring it up first, get it all out, and minimize it” before your opponent. Now he only looks dumb, or that he thinks we are.

Me? In an Obama vs. Romney race, I’m going with the Progressive!!

Good post on Lew Herb. I must admit, knowing his background I was pretty shocked at his appointment. Obama loyalists will conveniently ignore this fact. The only reason I frequently champion Romney is he is at heart an independent with good intentions. I like this about him. I think he is positioned well to actually facilitate progress. I encourage Obama supporters to take off their blinders and think for themselves or in the absence of that just do your research.

More liberal lunacy. And no mention of the tree ordinance? (you will no longer be in charge of the landscaping of your property). No mention of the Bike Locker ordinance rearing it's ugly head again? I imagine the pay-reaises for non-union employees is a moot issue. Given the proclivities of the incoming council, there probably won't be non-union employees much longer.
