Montclair Crime: Shoplifting at Whole Foods and an Unprovoked Assault

Arrest

On 1/19/12 at approximately 5:55 PM, police responded to the area of Whole Foods on Bloomfield Avenue on a report of a shoplifting. An employee reported that the suspect had filled a grocery cart with over $270 in merchandise and had walked past the cash registers and exited the store without paying. Police located an individual, later identified as Frederick Thomason, who fit the provided description on Bell Street. Thomason was placed under arrest after he was identified as the suspect in this incident.

Thomason, 51, of Newark, was charged with shoplifting. Bail was set at $2,500.

Assault

On 1/19/12 at approximately 12:30 PM, police responded to the area of Park Street and Bloomfield Avenue on a report of an assault. Police located the victim in the area of Montague Place and Park Street. The victim stated that he was walking east on Montague Place when he observed a group of black males in tan pants walking south on Midland Avenue. He reported that two of the males broke away from the group and walked west on Montague Place, passing the victim. The two males then turned around and began hitting the victim in the back of the head. The victim stated that the attack was completely unprovoked.

The victim said that the two males were wearing black ski masks, and that one of them was wearing a black jacket and carrying a dark-colored backpack. This suspect was approximately seventeen years old and approximately six feet tall. The victim was not able to provide any further information regarding the second suspect. The victim stated that he was not injured as a result of the assault.

Drug Arrest

As a result of an ongoing investigation, detectives obtained search warrants targeting Rodney Shomo and a Pine Street residence. On 1/18/12 at approximately 8:50 PM, detectives observed Shomo entering a black pickup truck in the area of Gates Avenue and Union Street. Detectives approached the vehicle and observed Shomo tossing an item behind the driver’s seat. Detectives retrieved the item and identified it as a plastic bag containing fifteen zip-lock bags containing cocaine. Shomo was placed under arrest and detectives executed the search warrant on the Pine Street residence.

During the execution of the search warrant, detectives located an additional seventeen bags of marijuana, empty zip-lock bags commonly used to package drugs for distribution, and two marijuana grinders. Detectives also seize $170 as suspected proceeds of drug distribution.

Shomo, 26, of Montclair, was charged with possession of cocaine, possession of marijuana, possession of cocaine with intent to distribute, possession of cocaine with intent to distribute within one thousand feet of Bullock School, possession of marijuana with intent to distribute, possession of marijuana with intent to distribute within one thousand feet of Glenfield School, possession of marijuana with intent to distribute within five hundred feet of public housing located at 11 Pine Street, and possession of drug paraphernalia. Bail was set at $50,000.

Arrest

On 1/19/12 at approximately 12:20 AM, police were patrolling the area of Lackawanna Plaza when they observed a Toyota Camry with dark tinted windows. A registration check revealed that the registered owner had a suspended driver’s license. Police stopped the vehicle at the Exxon Gas Station on Bloomfield Avenue and spoke to the driver, later identified as Emmanuel Doxy. While speaking to Doxy, police observed a screwdriver in the tray underneath the car’s radio. Police then spoke to the passenger, later identified as Kimball Charles, and observed another three screwdrivers in the passenger’s side door pocket.

Doxy was placed under arrest after police confirmed that he had a warrant issued by the Atlantic County Sheriff’s Department. Further investigation revealed that Charles was in possession of a canister containing what police believed to be marijuana residue. He was also found to be in possession of two Oxycodone pills, for which he did not have a prescription. He was also found to have a flashlight and a pair of thin, black gloves.

Doxy, 29, of Montclair, was charged with possession of burglary tools. He was also found to have additional warrants issued by Newark, with bail totaling $204. Doxy was issued motor vehicle summonses for driving while suspended and operating a motor vehicle with tinted windows. Bail was set at $3,500.

Charles, 29, of Matawan, was charged with unlawful possession of prescription legend drugs, possession of drug paraphernalia, and possession of burglary tools. Bail was set at $10,000.

 

Arrest

 

On 1/18/12 at approximately 10:00 PM, police responded to an apartment building on South Park Street on a report of a report of an unwanted individual in the hallway to the building. The caller stated that the individual was banging on the door to one of the apartments. Police later learned that no one was inside the apartment. Police attempted to escort the individual, later identified as Bradley McKinnon from the building, but McKinnon became hostile by yelling and cursing, stating that he was going to return to the apartment. McKinnon then attempted to return to the apartment and started banging on the walls.

McKinnon, 31, of Montclair, was placed under arrest and charged with disorderly conduct. He was later released.

Burglary

On 1/20/12 at approximately 6:55 AM, police responded to a single-family residence on Melrose Place on a report of a burglary. The victim reported that she had gone to sleep on the 20th at approximately 1:00 AM. When she awoke at approximately 5:30 AM, she discovered that her pocketbook was missing from the stand in the dining room. The pocketbook contained approximately $300 in cash, a Blackberry Curve cell phone, and various identification cards. It is believed that the suspect gained entry through an unlocked rear door. The victim further stated that she checked her Toyota Prius, which had been parked in her driveway, and discovered that it had been rummaged through. There are no suspects at this time.

    If he had food in that cart, it’s a sad comment on these times. Poor guy didn’t even have food stamps….Sorry Newt.

More liberal lunacy. And no mention of the tree ordinance? (you will no longer be in charge of the landscaping of your property). No mention of the Bike Locker ordinance rearing it's ugly head again? I imagine the pay-reaises for non-union employees is a moot issue. Given the proclivities of the incoming council, there probably won't be non-union employees much longer.
