We weren’t the only ones to wonder at Stephen Colbert’s sudden absence last week. When our hometown comedian returned to the small screen last night, he opened with a charming little riff about all the speculation on his absence, including Joan Rivers’ theory that he was having plastic surgery.
As some of our commenters had posted, Colbert’s absence had to do with a health crisis involving his 91-year-old mother, Lorna, in South Carolina, who Colbert slyly alluded to at the end of his intro.
“Evidently having 11 children makes you tough as nails,” he said. Then, making a gesture from his face to the camera, he added, “Confidential to a lovely lady.”
Our best to all the Colberts…

Wahooooo
Dear Stephen, sorry to hear about your mother, I’m glad she’s doing better. Would you please just invite Debbie to your next intimate dinner party already? Thanks, W. PS You were so funny the other night when you threw that glass of port in Jon’s face. Hi to the missus.
