Raccoons Find A Home At Montclair’s Watchung Plaza Train Station

A tipster sends us this video of new tenants living rent free at Montclair’s Watching Plaza train station and writes…

Montclair has freeloaders living in attic of Watchung Plaza train station. Attic hatch left open, family moves in. Park street side, above southern steps.

Check out the video — we especially like when the raccoon peeks out of the hatch when the train comes, considers boarding, and then goes back to bed.

I’ve long wondered…would it not be worthwhile to allow a local resident to open a coffee-and-donuts-type counter in the Watchung station? I see plenty of folks buying coffee, newspapers, etc. in the Plaza stores on their way to the trains. A presence in the station would limit vandalism, not to mention raccoons.

Last Wednesday, garbage pick up day in Upper Montclair, all the garbage cans on Valley Road and some on side streets had been knocked over and ransacked. I’m betting it was a raccoon family hootenanny. Maybe they’re related to these.

Well, that’s one way of avoiding a Montclair property tax hike!

Is that location zoned for a multiple family dwelling? Can the Racoon family build an extension on Park Street without applying for a variance?

What a cute story about one of nature’s adorable, fluffy creatures.

I can’t stand racoons they scare the crap out of me. They will chew on anything. We can no longer leave footballs outside because they like to chew them.

It is like Grey Gardens at the station!

Glad to hear there was a grant. It was an insane amount of $ that was proposed to come out of town coffers. Good job, BID!
