The Township of South Orange Village has installed three electric vehicle chargers near the NJ Transit Midtown Direct station. The charges are located next to the solar powered scooter shelter sheds, which were installed directly across from the train station in 2010.
Two of the spaces can be used to park and charge electric vehicles, but one has been designated for charging only. The charge for using the spots is $1 per hour, which is paid for at the Pay Stations that are equipped with a Smart Card system currently being used by the South Orange Parking Authority for its metered lots.
The Village received a grant for the vehicle chargers from Sustainable Jersey last year in the amount of $9,475.
The new system is one of a number of green initiatives South Orange has implemented over the last few years. Other projects include (but are not limited to) single-stream recycling, solar panels on public buildings and upgrading HVAC systems and lighting for energy efficiency.
The Village is holding a ribbon cutting ceremony on October 25th at 11:00 am at the site of the EV chargers. Representatives from Sustainable Jersey and a number of local legislators will be present. Residents are invited to participate.

Now you can drive your Volt or Leaf to South Orange and back to Montclair in the same day, once you’ve spent a few hours charging up, unless you use the lights, radio, windshield wipers, heat, or A.C.
Sure, deadeye, the technology isn’t quite there yet, but I look forward to your grandchildren and mine tooling around in their extremely good looking and superbly engineered electric cars. No doubt, they’ll relish a visit to old grandpappy deadeye for a ride in his rusty old 2012 Cadillac Escalade, complete with faded Romney/Ryan bumper stickers and NJ historic plates front and back.
