The Associated Press reported the New Jersey Department of Health accidentally breached the privacy of medical marijuana patients registered with Greenleaf Compassion Center in Montclair earlier this week.

The NJ DOH sent an email to patients registered with Greenleaf’s program that disclosed the email addresses, and in some cases, the names of the participants.

DOH officials released a statement saying they’re working to avoid repeating the mistake.

  1. Not that you really want an answer ridgerranger, but we may want the government running our health care because….

  2. I made a joke above but I really want to drive home what a serious breach this is. This is very sensitive information that is now leaked. The best case scenario is that it will all blow over and only the people mentioned in the mass email will have this knowledge. The worst case scenario is that this information will get into the hands of people with bad intentions. I hope that doesn’t happen but this is precisely why the HIPPA laws were established.

The fault lies with the person who made the error, yes, and I wish I could toss the blame on BIG GOVERNMENT (which I hate) but it’s not that easy. I have seen countless errors such as this made under the current health care system we have. So perhaps the blame lies in the way we educate the people who handle our most sensitive health-related information.
